It's .... ok. While I love k.d. and her voice, I don't think she's done anything radical or particularly different or insightful with any of the tracks. I like the originals much better, including and especially Joni's. On the brighter side, part of her tour, includes the Hollywood Bowl for two nights with special guest Rufus Wainwright, who will for sure be doing a/some duet(s) with k.d. (both Canucks and queeer and out) and so that night will be a major treat (for me anyway), and hope some of you SoCal'rs come out for it. ~Richard in San Francisco n.p. Thanks for the heads up. I think k.d. treads a middle course here: just different enough to make them her own to a degree, while not completely alienating anyone who love the originals. Interesting news re: k.d. and Rufus. Having recently seen Rufus in concert in London (thanks Garret!) I can well imaging k.d. and Rufus' voices complementing each other very well. Sounds like a treat. You are right-Barnes and Noble have a bunch of them by the likes of LeeAnn Rimes, John Lithgow, The Beatles (Yellow Submarine), even They Might Be Giants (although I always thought They Were Probably Disposable 80's Crap, but what do I know?). The Chelsea Morning book comes out Oct. 1, and is 925 pages smaller than Bill Clinton's book (32 pages to be exact), and comes with a CD! That's right, it comes with a CD, but what is on it? They don't say. I'm guessing it's the song "Chelsea Morning" and nothing more. Under $13 from Amazon. Here's the description from B&N: Product Details: ISBN: 0689035934 Publisher: ibooks, Incorporated Format: Hardcover, 32pp Age Range: 4 to 8 Pub. Date: October 2004 From the Publisher It's a day filled with fantasy and fairies, rainbows and butterscotch. Joni Mitchell's classic song "Chelsea Morning" becomes a delightful children's picture book when combined with the imagination of famed illustrator, Brian Froud. Dreamy creatures frolic as a young girl wakes to a smiling sun, passes the day with various pixies, and eventually says goodnight to a moon enchantress. Vivid and enthralling, this book and CD set will introduce a whole new generation to Joni's touching lyrics and will be a treasure to her legions of fans. Here's a large jpeg of the cover-WARNING-do not look at this if you are on drugs! http://a1204.g.akamai.net/7/1204/1401/04052514011/images.barnesandnoble.com/images/7790000/7795167.jpg Publisher's descriptive page: http://www.ibooksinc.com/milkcookies/source/0-689-03593-4_info.htm I recommend getting one of these for that kid or grandkid in your life. The two previous ones went extinct (Both Sides Now and Circle Game). It's something they can pass on to their kids, from that Joni freak old timer (ie you). Also, you can switch the CD with one you burned yourself, with a bunch of great Joni songs on it. Amazon says release date is Oct. 1. I found this link to something called "Joni Mitchell Collection of musical arrangements, 1960-1970" "1 box(.5 lin.ft)", "Collection consists of holographs of musical socres of "Chelsea morning," "I don't know where I stand," and "Who," arranged for orchestra by Don Bogley." A holograph is "a document wholly in the handwriting of its author; also : the handwriting itself" I guess that means they are handwritten by Mr. Bogley. What is "Who"?. I thought Who was on first. Anyway, it says that they can be viewed with advance notice to the UCLA Library, and that the "container list is not yet available online". "Chelsea Morning" strikes me as an odd choice for a children's book (or children's anything) but I just ran through the lyrics in my head and I guess it works . . . But I heard this song as a "morning after" song, where Joni is still aglow from the loving and is seeing everything fresh and new and trying to entice her lover to stay and put on the day (i.e. nothing) and weare it 'til the night comes. In other words, while it's full of clever descriptions and some imaginative language, it just seems a bit adult for a children's book. Anyone else feel this way?
