Vince, in Chicago for the series where the anointed of God White Sox are playing the spawn of Satan cubs Relationship roulette: Learn from mistakes Published June 26, 2004 Dear Amy: I have had a lot of change in my life in the last five months. I am 27 and live with and take care of my parents. They have had medical problems, and I am the only child that will come and help them. In January I decided to go out with my co-worker's brother-in-law. I went out with him, and like all guys he promised me the moon. He told me almost everything about his life, and I thought we were building something. He knew this was my first relationship and that I am not good with feelings. That weekend we went to the beach. I gave my virginity, which I thought was really important. All of this happened in three weeks. I told him that it was important but I did not expect to get married. After that we had sex for the rest of that week at the beach. The day before Valentine's Day he took me out and we got into our first fight, about Valentine's Day. The next day he dumped me -- on my first Valentine's Day. At first he said he wasn't ready; then he said I was not his type. Since then I have sent letters to him, wanting to know if we can try again. I feel I'm bothering him. I quit my job because my colleague (his in-law) was pushing my personal life with the professional. I don't understand these feelings or what I'm supposed to do next. - -- Heartbroken in Oregon Dear Heartbroken: Here's what you're supposed to do next: Call your friends, read self-help books, take bubble baths, listen to Joni Mitchell, cry into your pillow, write in your diary, cry some more, take long walks, watch Colin Firth movies. Here's what you're not supposed to do: Beg someone to try again or quit your job. Here's how the relationship thing works. Sometimes people hurt each other. Sometimes you have sex with someone and regret it later, which is an excellent reason to be extra judicious about it. Even though you say you're not good at feelings, you learn about feelings by having them. You learn about love and sex and loss by experiencing it. You'll be wiser next time, and I hope you'll get out there and have a next time. I also think it would be a very good idea for you to get some respite from your responsibilities with your parents. If you can get a break there, you'll have more time and energy to devote to your own life, which I believe you must do. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jun 2004 10:48:26 -0700 (PDT) From: Em Subject: good cheesy organ 'nudder one would be.... There was no such thing as free love..you can't teach that responsiblity over night." "We were like children in a candy store..... it was irresponisble" and the gem "What happened was like a beautiful moonlight flower that bloomed just once." The quotes are as close as i can remember. Dennis Hopper (talking about Easy Rider) and others also feature (but who cares!) and there is some interesting discourse on the highs and subsequent lows of the flower power era. Footage of Joni singing live at Isle Of Wight festival and some TV clips that everyone has probably seen before also feature. Joni looks great (chuffing away) and say 'y'know' alot. Anyone seen it? Here's one for you - I just started watching the show Nip/Tuck on dvd, and one of the episodes had a joni reference. A lesbian character was talking about her experience with a man years before the conversation which was taking place. She said the man had long hair, and she just closed her eyes and pretended he was Joni Mitchell. Since the show involves plastic surgeons, maybe they will use Happiness is the Best Facelift sometime.
