He gave the graduating students and the standing-room-only crowd a few of his own ideas for reaching one's potential. He told the students the most important question they'll ask themselves in 40 or 50 years is what they have done with their lives. He encouraged them to make career choices based on passions rather than position. "I recommend you find something you enjoy doing every day of your life," he said. Borrowing an analogy from a Joni Mitchell song, Cox said life is like a carousel. He said you cannot turn back, but you do have other choices. "You have the ability to choose which pony to ride and the direction your pony will go," he said. I'll jump in here and give you my take on it, because I live about a mile from Laurel Canyon & go hiking there on a regular basis. Also, a good friend lives in Laurel Canyon, up on Lookout Mountain (near where Joni lived) and she's a true Lady of the Canyon! I think Laurel Canyon still has some funkiness to it, though nothing near what it must have been like in the 60s. It begins in the congested flatlands of West Hollywood, winds up and over the Hollywood Hills and drops down into Studio City. It's very wooded, some grand houses have been built up in there (too big & with too many Mercedes' in the driveway, but that's another issue!) but lots of cool & funky homes are still up in there. The small, winding streets are dead-end...Laurel Canyon is mainly residential...the only business in the area is a small cafe, which seems to change hands often. I love hiking in there...lots of birds, wildlife, beautiful plants & wildflowers. A great escape from the big city below. Topanga Canyon is about 15-20 miles northwest of Laurel Canyon. It starts at the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and winds up & over the Santa Monica Mountains. It's a beautiful, remote area...and there's a small town a few miles inland called Topanga, and it feels like you've stepped back into the 60s. The few stores there have hand painted peace signs in the windows, batik & tie-dyed curtains & you see hand-painted anti-Bush slogans along the roadway. It's a very small community, with a natural foods market, an amazing organic restaurant called Inn of the Seventh Ray, a small live performance theater and in the summer they have live music on the weekends. It's a great escape from LA...and you'd never know you were so close to such a big city. Most of the houses back in there are very funky...one was built around a tree and the trunk of it is in their living room...another home uses an old railroad car as their garage. There are also lots of big, fancy homes in there...mostly on the hilltop to get the ocean view. The road winds its way down to Woodland Hills in the San Fernando Valley. Topanga Canyon's a GREAT place to ride a motorcycle! I hope this helps give you more of a visual. Would love to see this for myself.
