Here's a suggestion: Walk into Warner Brothers wearing a white suit and carrying a clipboard, tell the receptionist you need to take the Joni Mitchell tapes back to the shop for repairs. Send me a copy when you get them. Here is an excerpt of the review, from "Dirty Linen: Folk and World Music," No. 111, April/May 2004, pp. 49-50, by regular contributor Lahri Bond of Amherst, Mass.: Cris Williamson & Holly Near, "Cris & Holly," H&C 6201 (2003) With formidable back catalogues between them, Cris Williamson and Holly Near's album, simply titled "Cris & Holly," and their subsequent "Peace & Love" tour draw on past glories and a wonderful selection of new songs. ... Williamson takes the first lead with a letter-perfect rendition of "Tea Leaf Prophecy," a song by Joni Mitchell, who has always been a big influence on her. ... See, I kept forgetting to take the magazine along to where I was using a computer, and after about a week, was ready to post from memory, but went back to the magazine to find the review. Having by then misremembered who the artists were, I couldn't find it. Yesterday, I searched more exhaustively. A thousand pardons. Beyond ``Avez vous une allumette`` I have never heard anything else from Joni in French. I appreciate that she may have had little exposure to French in Saskatchewan of the 50's, but I would suspect that Joni has some ability to express herself in French (Edith Piaf, travel to France, etc). It would be a great delight for francophones the world over to hear Joni en francais - but I won't hold my breath! "Free Man in Paris," "In France They Kiss on Main Street" and "Yvette in English" would be ripe for re-recording in French, non? I don't go as far as writing it down, but I start trying to put the words into French to see/hear what it sounds like. I don't bother to try to make it sound correct because that would take the fun out of it. (I tried taking translation one year and it drove me nuts.) N.P. My son writing down and practicing disses to use on a kid who's been bugging him at school. Some of them are really funny & Matthew is killing himself laughing as he does this. I know I shouldn't encourage that sort of thing, but what the hey! Like mother, like son. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Mar 2004 23:59:18 EST From: Smurfycopy@aol.com Subject: JONI MITCHELL HANDWRITTEN SONG LIST FOR TRAVELOGUE (2002) I never go to eBay anymore, but I got an eBay popup tonight and decided to check out what the most expensive Joni item is. Hurry! Just 13 hours to meet the starting bid of $2,225.00. Hey, Bob Sart! Buy it and you can cut up the list and rearrange the songs any way you like! From http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3805684888&category=210 The charm of this beautifully presented item is that all its stunning components came from Joni's personal Grammy-winning art director, Robbie Cavolina. The centerpiece is a track list entirely written out in Joni Mitchell's hand, a list of songs which she carefully designed to present the arc of her life for her autobiographical CD collection, Travelogue. At the last minute, however, you'll see she changed the order of the first four songs. Also in the attractive frame is the UNIQUE press proof for Cavolina's CD packaging design. And finally, indeed perhaps most poignantly, Cavolina included two candid photographs of Joni which he took himself, one of which shows her painting a self-portrait much like the one on Travelogue's cover. Joni Mitchell is one of North America's finest songwriters. This list of favorite songs in her own hand, ending in The Circle Game, has an eerie beauty. And framed with several personal items from a man who worked, played, and argued with her for yearsb&well, it's not just your nice commercial memorabilia display. Love Street Gallery is pleased to present Another Piece of the True Rock. Comes with an emotional and highly detailed letter of authenticity from Cavolina talking about Joni's process of choosing the order of her songs on an album.
