Beyond ``Avez vous une allumette`` I have never heard anything else from Joni in French. I appreciate that she may have had little exposure to French in Saskatchewan of the 50's, but I would suspect that Joni has some ability to express herself in French (Edith Piaf, travel to France, etc). It would be a great delight for francophones the world over to hear Joni en francais - but I won't hold my breath! Very nice of you & I really appreciate it. So, a few of you asked what my connection to Joni is about. I first became aware of Joni Mitchell when I was 12 years old (back in in 1970!). I was stunned by her lyrics. I thought "Now, here's a kindred spirit. Not only is she tapping into my soul, but she knows what I'm thinking & feeling". Not that it's all about me, but hey...I was 12! I was a bit of a loner back then and I still can be at times...I have to make myself bust out from time to time! Joni has gotten me through some rough times over the years and continues to do so to this day. I've enjoyed every musical style Joni's ventured into, although I'm most partial to her first 4 or 5 albums. Listening to those first albums (album sounds weird, but what DO you call them now?...CDs, I guess) is like calling up an old friend for a visit. The music I listen to at any given moment is reflective of my mood. That's why I appreciate Joni's many styles. I grew up in Bellingham, Washington and lived in Seattle for many years. Currently, I live in LA (North Hollywood, to be exact) and work as a Personal Assistant. I'm in the process of job hunting, as it's getting real old having to be responsible for someone else's life...then my own life takes second place, and no job is worth that. I used to work in the non-profit world and may go back there again. My spare time is spent listening to music, reading and creating mosaics. I'm looking to take a stained glass or glass-blowing class. Well, that's enough about me. Thanks again to everyone who welcomed me on board. I enjoy reading all your comments...as varied and passionate as they are! Take care...Brian [demime 0.97c-p1 removed an attachment of type application/ms-tnef which had a name of winmail.dat] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 2004 14:33:41 EST From: Gertus@aol.com Subject: Joni's on that Desert Island again Jack Vettriano chose "Shades of Scarlet Conquering" to take on his Desert Island in today's edition of the program BBC Radio 4 - Factual - Desert Island Discs -Jack Vettriano Not surprising after the South Bank Show recently which I didn't see but read about right here. She sang some of the HOSL stuff, Coyote, Woman of Heart & Mind, and took a verse of "This Land Is Your Land". I was lying in bed bleary-eyed wondering whether to listen to the prog or go back to sleep, when lo and behold, the magic words Joni and Mitchell issued forth, followed by him talking about what the song represented to him. What great taste he shows. He also said that he could have chosen any one of her songs, suggesting that he's more than a casual fan. For those who haven't heard of him, he is widely acknowledged to be the UK's most popular artist, in terms of numbers of paintings/prints sold, but he's equally widely derided by art critics, who denounce him as a populist hack (perhaps the Jackie Collins of the art world). Well, I don't know his paintings, but hey, he can't be all bad, right? Azeem in London - back on line after being invaded by a truly horrible computer bug that finally prompted me to get AV protection. Suffice it to say that the website my PC suddenly took me to (presumably because the virus had told it to go there) confirmed that there are some very sick people out there. *shudder* ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 2004 23:11:33 -0500 From: Gary Zack Subject: Interesting Canadian Joni Site Found an interesting Canadian page on Joni: http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusicPopEncycloPagesM/mitchell_joni.html I found it especially interesting that there was apparently a live album that was recorded between "Clouds" and "Ladies of the Canyon" that was scrapped. The site also lists Joni's single releases. I also checked an Ian and Sylvia site and it stated that they did have, apparently only one son, Clay, so he must be our "Spoony." Go for it Catherine! :-) Best regards, Gary Detroit ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2004 #87 ******************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
