Kate, since ACOY may be my favorite Joni song of all time, I am hardly disagreeing with you. However, Diana's version on the TNT Joni Tribute concert was a fantastic cover - some real magic in that performance. And, what I found especially appealing was that it was an "interpretive" type of cover, rather than a "copying" type of cover, if you get my drift. It is my favorite cover of ACOY among the dozen or so (tops - probably fewer) I have heard. For example, on the Joni Mitchell website, the lyrics for Coyote include this line: "He's too fat from the Bay of Fundy...." Also, a lawyer I know, when a particularly vexacious suit was mercifully about to be settled, wrote a letter to the judge which he intended to end with a sentence saying that he hoped they could finally "put an end to this suit." Only, his secretary typed an "h" instead of an "u" in suit; no one caught it before it went out. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Mar 2004 10:12:39 EST From: MINGSDANCE@aol.com Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2004 #113 In a message dated 3/17/04 3:01:36 AM Eastern Standard Time, les@jmdl.com writes: > It's ironic that so many followers of the "Prince of Peace" have not, > apparently, heard his message at all, or have refashioned to whatever > is convienient for them. But historically.... > (shudder). > RR > I have been silent for some time but must reply: I was baptized Christian at age 7 and everyday since that time I have seen judgment upon judgment made by All branches/sects of the churches/religions and governments. I have lived in fear since 5 years of age from the hatred spewed by them all on if you don't do this exactly you are going to hell! I knew at 5 years old I was gay, try carrying that load from that age with the jokes the judgments of perversions and the likes. Then contract AIDS in the early 80's and hear Regan/Bush support all of the Churches who are SCREAMING out against you and your people saying this is the wrath of God as they are suffering and dying horrible deaths alone. Today sorry from them is to late for me with "268" dead friends to this horrendous holocaust. Now still denying Marriage and rights to David and me although we are going on 24 years together. The government and the churchs are both quite dangerous in my opinion. I believe organized religion is Mankind's biggest failure... In my heart I have always in every thing I do ask the moral choice of" wrong or right" it comes from my heart and I'm quite sure Jesus and all of the prophets brought to us were teaching that. We all belong to a Great Spirit and that is in living and helping others everyday, not saying what should be or what was but here and now. I think Joni is in tune to what I am saying, it all comes out in her lyrics. I'll always remember that hug and kiss when I told her I had AIDS, she didn't skip a beat grabbing hold of me tightly, most others have a moment of hesitation in how they respond. We all were born on this planet the same no one can surprises that truth! The only blame is to ourselves if we make a bad or harmful decision it is up to us within ourselves to correct it. Because of bigotry taught by religions we are still crucifying people today in this the most civilized and educated nation in the world dragging a black man behind a truck hanging a gay boy on a fence post to die and we are witnesses to it through the news daily as we sit complacently by. DED her worst? I think not it may be her best. The killer nails are still ringing through guns and bombs world wide due to religious beliefs, government and corrupt greed. Oh These troubled times! My friend pointed out, when I sent him the list of Joni's songs that have been covered (from the jmdl.com website), that Twisted is #13 on there -- and as we know, wasn't written by Joni. Kate of the North - - Anyone read Life of Pi, by Yann Martel? It won the Mann-Booker prize last year. He is writer-in-residence in Saskatoon this winter, and has fallen in love with the city (calling it the best city in Canada to live in; the 'paris of the prairies') and the province. He was interviewed on CBC Radio's Sounds Like Canada yesterday. I mention this because of our previous conversation onlist about the Sask landscape. Martel is from Montreal, and said he found the province spectacularly beautiful and its landscape unexpectedly (because of its reputation for being flat and empty!) varied. Also, and I wonder if this applies to Our Joan, that because of the big skies, Saskatchewan people have a tendency to "look up." ~~~ the three ugly sisters ~~~ - -- http://xoetc.antville.org Who does she think she is Anaos Nin? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Mar 2004 10:03:07 -0600 From: "mia ortlieb" Subject: re: unreleased songs <> Hi Marian, I wonder if every one of those songs on that list was truly written by Joni. I remember seeing "I Still Miss Someone" on that list, which is a Johnny Cash tune. When the Johnny Cash video circulated showing Joni and Johnny singing that song as a duet, this title was removed from the list. I also wonder if "Kelly" might be "Little Green." On some live bootlegs I've heard, Joni does sing "Kelly Green" at the end of her song. Mia _________________________________________________________________ Is your PC infected? Begosh and begorrah, it's St. Paddy's Day and I hope you're all feelin' just a little green today. (I am! I'm going to see The Chieftains tonight at Symphony Hall in Boston, thanks to a much-loved JMDL sister!) Well, my long national nightmare of computer problems and ISP hassles is finally over! Woo-hoo! (Bad news? I am still unable to escape the evil clutches of AOL. Long story.) It has now been more than 3 months since I was an active JMDLer. As Judy Collins once thoughtfully asked, who knows where the time goes . . . I have noticed lots of new people posting here, so I'll (re)introduce myself. My name is Bob M -- just like someone *else* on the list, so I am going by "Smurf" or "Troy" or "Handsome" in order to avoid confusion. I am 27 years old and I have a swimmer's build. My hobbies are helping people, competing in Ironman events, and counting my piles of money. Even though I have been away lo these many weeks, I have been checking the archives from time to time to see what's up with you all. Most of the time I had 2 cents I wanted to throw into the discussion, but I have forgotten just about everything I wanted to contribute. (I did take a couple of those online tests that are so popular here. I scored 70% Dixie on the Yankee/Dixie poll -- which is ridiculous, if you know how much of a Bostonian/New Englander I am. And for the "Are You Going to Hell?" test, I scored higher than Wally -- which firmly answers that question.) One subject of discussion I really wanted to get in on was the one about the Janet Jackson brouhaha at the Super Bowl on February 1. I have a theory . . . Since Janet knows Joni doesn't lie, maybe her Super Bowl stunt was just a response to Joni's famous rant from her the-music-business-is-a-cesspool interview of 2002: "What would I do? Show my tits? Grab my crotch? Get hair extensions and a choreographer?" I think we can all agree that for all purposes Janet's performance was, in fact, a resounding "YES!" to all three questions! Regarding Joni In Fiction, all my files were able to be saved from my computer after its horrific crash. I hope to be up to date on that front soon. As I have said before, I started this section of the JMDL thinking there would be 10 or 12 entries and that that would be all -- but boy was I off. By the time I finish making updates to the site I think it will go to more than 200 entries! That's 200 references to Joni and/or her music which people have found in novels, short stories, poems, plays, TV shows, films, etc. I get tired just thinking about it. And almost last, but not in any way least, I would like to propose a new awards competition: The Golden JMDL Poster Award. There are too many nominees to mention here, ladies and gentlemen, but the one person who never failed to make me laugh while I was digging around the archives -- and, who should be getting ready to thank God and her attorneys -- is Catherine from Canada! Boy, those Canadian women are something. Like Joni, Catherine is multitalented. Check out her Jonifest photos at Chris Marshall's hatstand.com site. My faves! Finally, like any civilized human, I was shocked and angered by the Madrid bombings. But what really surprised me was how "connected" to it I felt because of the people from Spain I have come to know here. So that's a good thing about the JMDL, I think -- the feeling it gives me (us?) of being a part of the whole earth, and a heightened awareness of how our actions can affect so many others on this planet. I am happy to know that none of us fell victim to this carnage, yet saddened to realize that, in the end, we are all its victims. That's it. - --Smurf ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Mar 2004 16:40:13 EST From: AsharaProducLLC@aol.com Subject: Jonifest 2004 Hi everyone, We have been having a great deal of problems with the Jonifest 2004 database for the past several months, but I am happy to say that it seems like all the problems have now been fixed.
