I love Diana Krall. Using her as a guide to what you are prone to enjoy listening to, I would suggest picking up these three cds to begin with: - - Court and Spark - - The HIssing of Summer Lawns - - Hejira However, Mitchell is one of those talents who has managed over the course of her career to do completely novel things with each release, so, as I'm sure you will hear from others on the list, there are many many ways to approach her music, and defining a starting point for someone else is really a completely difficult thing to do without knowing the breadth of their listening habits. Those cds above that I have suggested represent a condensed yet wide take on how she paints musically using jazz elements as her pigments and sense of space. Court and Spark for instance was her first release on which jazz group arrangements came to the fore. It incorporates Tom Scott's LA Express in many of the tunes and yet also serves to showcase a broad sense of classical movement. Hissing of Summer of Summer Lawns is a continuation of that jazz exploration with denser harmonics and more fluid mix of gliding lead guitar and electric keyboards. Hejira is "out there in space" and has huge depth of melody and lyric and is given fundamental drive by the simultaneous trombone-rythem-section and sweeping obligato counterpoints and sustains of Jaco Pastorious on fretless bass. All three are more orless in the middle and one can expand to her earlier more "folk" oriented writing as well as forward to her more mature understanding of herself as a true composer rather than tunesmith. In any event, I wish you well and am almost envious thinking about how wonderful it will be for you to embark on your journey into the wonderland that is Joni Mitchell. Again, welcome to Planet Joni. cul heath Ahmed Shoukry wrote: Hi all, Thanks to Diana Krall's version of a Case of You that I came to know about Joni Mitchell (how lame is that?!) and I feel lucky that I have. It's all to the good, another recruit to the higher echelons of the Tasterati :-) Like you, I'm not a downloader (with my PC and ropy dial-up connection, it would probably take longer to download an album's worth of sings than I have left in this world); I much prefer to buy something in a shop. As far as acquiring Joni is concerned, I'd concur that Court & Spark is a great place to start, and you can then work your way forward or back depending on whether your preference is for, sparser, folkier stuff and higher vocal registers or more ornate instrumentation, jazzier textures and a lower voice respectively (yeah, that's a *gross* simplification everyone, I know...). Finally, it's nice to have someone else with an "exotic" name on the list! As the Grand Poobah of Joni covers, I'm always glad to see someone discover Joni by way of someone else's recording. With Joni pretty much retired and not writing, and the radio pretty much ignoring her for the last 30 years, it will be more common that Joni gets discovered by way of Diana, Tori, Sarah, etc. By the way Diana will be doing a cover of Joni's "Black Crow" on her next CD, out in a month or so - I can't wait. Anyway, several have suggested to you Court & Spark, and that's certainly a good suggestion. You might even try going at it chronologically and starting with Song To A Seagull (sometimes referred to as Joni Mitchell) and moving forward through her work, and experiencing her musical progressions. Regardless of how you go, I'm sort of jealous of your journey! Welcome to the JMDL, and don't be afraid to ask questions or make comments anytime. New insights are always refreshing. Colin, like you I was introduced to this song by Joni; I assumed that she was its composer and even though I have heard many versions of it (I include it in my collection of Joni covers) hers will probably remain for me the definitive take. Trouble Child does have the same theme, I agree tho it is darker in nature, That song does not make me feel good and reminds me much of the time I was lcoked in a 'sterilsied roon' for 12 months. An horrendous time but still better than being with my family of origin. That was the only reason i agreed to go-to get away-little did I know it amounted to imprisonment and I was then stuck. bw colin http://www.btinternet.com/~tantraapso/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Mar 2004 11:32:03 -0500 From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Twisted Subject: Christie Brinkley, 49 Yeah, Christie is a huge fan of Joni's. About fifteen years ago, I picked up some magazine in a dentist office and read an interview with Christie Brinkley. This is when she was married to Billy Joel. Christie was being interviewed in her own house, when all of a sudden the phone rang and it was Joni on the other end. Apparently Joni was calling to decline an invitation to some sort of benefit concert (I think) that Billy Joel was putting together. Christy had answered the phone, and the interviewer described how Christie was trembling so much from nervousness. After the phone call, Christie looked sort of dumbfounded and explained to the interviewer how much of fan she was. Congratulations on your decision! I would add to the other album suggestions "Blue"; it is often listed as a favorite by people on this list, and it's the one A Case of You is from. It's more of an intimate, acoustic record, and certainly a work of creative genius. Welcome to the list! It seems like he's gone on record more than once as being a fan of Joni's (but, of course, I couldn't cite sources).
