I take it as a reference to schizophrenia, two personalities, and the axiom, "Two heads are better than one"....so she got the last laugh on her psychiatrist. I find it fun to look beyond the concept of a simple medical diagnosis and focus more on the song as a reference to interesting mental capabilities, the genius of an artist like Joni. This song seems to be another example of a strategic use of duality in a Joni song. Regarding a medical diagnosis, perhaps it was about dissociative identity disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder). Schizophrenia involves auditory hallucinations, not additional personalities. However, I think the song is much more interesting to think about from the perspective of art rather than mental illness. It reminds me of the way some people are thought of as having a problem rather than a gift when they are different from the "norm." And, I think this song empowers people to thrive when their gifts are branded as a pathology. At least that is what it does for me. "Interesting aside, the line "They all laughed at angry young men," was originally "They all laughed at A. Graham Bell"...I always wondered if they changed it to avoid legal complications with the Bell Telephone company. I didn't know about:" Yes, that is very interesting! Quoth she: "I couldn't count the hours I spent by my stereo deciphering Joni Mitchell's lyrics and adding them to my life's meaning. When I got the chance to meet her, there were so many things I wanted to say, and I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't talk. She said, 'You know how many times people ask me if I'm your mom?' I tried to speak again, but nothing came out." Just thought I'd pass that on. Two heads ARE better than one, heehee. It is a brilliant song that says so much for people who are creative or different from the "norm" and I'm sure that is why Joni chose to record it. Thanks to Annie for writing it and to Joni for reviving it!
