They are showing the "theatrical" version. The dvd has the full concert, which was two parts-the first began with Anoushka Shankar, who was then joined by Jeff Lynne for "The Inner Light", then a 43 piece Indian orchestra performed a lengthy composition written for George by Ravi Shankar, featuring Clapton on acoustic guitar. Following an intermission, the rock section kicked off with all kinds of Pythons, Wilburys, Beatles and more. The PBS version is almost 2 hours long, so it probably cut out the orchestral piece, maybe a couple of other songs. Catch it if you can. It occurred to me just minutes ago and right before reading the above, that maybe Joni simply meant: "Skinny black models with [straightened] curls" Or perhaps she wanted to write "Raveened curls" but "Raveen curls" sounded better? Or maybe she's just pronouncing "raven" oddly ... could've been she was thinking of the bird, black in color. Anyway, I vote for Raveen. If there's not sufficient interest that way, am also willing to send it to someone with an "appreciation" for dancing, perhaps. Costs of postage to be borne by yours truly. Any takers? Contact me privately with your address & so on. If there's more than one who wants it, I'll send it to whoever is willing to make a copy or two for others, kind of a tape tree thing. Or, otherwise, if more than one asks for a copy but no one can dub, I'll put all the names in a hat and have a draw. To give everyone who might be interested a chance, whether they get individual posts or digest, I'll give it until high noon this Sunday, eastern standard time (or when I remember if it's after that.) I think it is Joni at her absolute best. Just a few teasers... She hits the soprano long and high in Rainy Night House's "I sing soprano in the upstairs choir (chilling) Coyote and Don Juan's Restless Daughter is a medley and rightfully so- they are both so fresh and jazzy and new at this time. you have to get up and dance! She sings Centerpiece in Harry's House much differently, lower... she laughs a lot and you can tell she is having a ball. Her voice is strong with fantastic range...... There is even a song sung that is not on any studio or live album. I have listened to Joni for over three decades and I think this is one perfect performance . I wasn't trying to categorize Joni. She is one of the greatest song writers of the 20th and 21 centuries. She just happens to be a woman. In the late 50's and 60's there just wasn't many recognized female singer/song writers, and it just so happened that Joni, Carole King, Laura Nyro and Janis Ian "open the doors" so to speak for other women to follow in their path. And, they are very much looked up to for their leading the way. I just watched the"Let's Sing Out" video, and the host, Oscar Brand, made it quite clear that people performing their own music was quite a new thing at that time ('65/'66). Shit, Joni blew them right away. The other performers were gawking(slack jawed) at her from the side when she was singing. Jono ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Mar 2004 22:04:28 -0500 From: "michael o'malley" Subject: Joni dance show on CBC- From time to Time Gee. I was beginning to think no one would ask. This event did not seem to register strongly on people's radars. I did indeed watch the show. From Time to Time is a small dance film, about 40 minurtes long, with no dialogue. The soundtrack is basically a collage of radio news and Joni's orchestral tunes. The film traces the heart journey of the female lead, from high school to motherhood, accompanied of course by a crew of friends and lovers. I must confess, I'm not a big modern dance fan. I just don't `get`` a lot of modern dance. It doesn't move me. In fact, I find swing, jitterbug, flamenco and ballroom much more entertaining! This said, I think the film is quite well done, and it certainly has its moments. The art direction is superb, continuosly moving the action to different settings. The choreography is quite hot and sensual at times. Whodda thunk you could set modern choreography to fairly slow-paced vocal / orchestral music? The dance works quite well and it is interesting to see Joni's music used in this unusual way. I enjoyed the surprise of discovering what song would be featured next in the different sequences. The segues between songs are also quite well done. The filmaker described Joni's emotional and psychological universe, as revealed by the lyrics, quite successfully, I thought. While this is definitely a movie for dance fans, I'm not sure that it's everyone's cup of tea. Did anyone else see it?
