Hi, Jono! I'm very glad to hear that you're having an easier time with Blue's "emotionality". It's been discussed a lot, that matter about if Joni's music is depressing (as some ignorants say ;-) or just the truth of life (which is my position about it, you know). I always felt that Blue (along with other Joni's treasures), Leonard Cohen (much more known here, in Spain, or even a song like Pablo Milanes "Life ain't worth nothing" functions like balm to me when I'm (or rather should say I was) somewhat depressed: please don't make me hear "glad" music when I'm not in the mood; let me hear poetry, music about life's unavoidable pains, about the "slings and arrows of outrageous romance". Dear Joni, you make real what was only a deep feeling for me. It's true, maybe I hear more "Night Ride Home" these days (altouugh not in the shower, indeed, hey Jimmy!) but when I want to relax, concentrate myself in listening beauty... always are the somewhat sombres or sad songs what I search for (for instance, in Christmas time I'm usually happy, thanks heavens above, but what's my favourite "Christmas" song?, the one I play more and more? It was recorded in LA or Long Beach in '72 so maybe Joni was there in attendance. I'm particularly interested in going back to another date's discussions on any of the following 2 items: 1) Janet Jackson's prime time interview shortly after the Super Bowl, and what people think of her saying Joni was a major influence (i.e. song 'Got til it's gone") 2) The passing of John Guerin in January. As you know he shared a Grammy award with Joni for instrumental arrangement for "Down to You," I think, as well as being her lover for many years in the 1970's. His work was very prolific, playing drums for many, many singers. I always thought Joni had a prophesy in "Cactus Tree" of the many lovers that were to come later in her life, and that John Guerin would be the ultimate "drummer" in her life, if not her "dreamer" Thanks ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Feb 2004 09:02:58 -0600 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: New Orleans Speaking of Cajon's I got my new one after Ashara Cajonnapped mine at the last fest. I realize more and more that there are lyrics I've never really heard before (despite the fact that they're included in the albums). Lately I've been listening to Hejira a lot. I have been investigating this area for a trip with the family to celebrate Mikey9s graduation from Jr. High. We found this deal where we could get an ALL inclusive price to go to the Cancun Palace Resort (one of 6 resorts they own which you have full access to all the facilities including restaurants and bars for free see http://palaceresorts.com They have several resorts that are adult only like one called Aventura which is mainly a spa type place. Anyways the whole thing cost wise is pretty damn interesting. From New Orleans (only cause it is a charter flight) roundtrip airfare, airport transfers to and from the resort, transportation between all of their resorts, all food in ALL of their restaurants and room service, ALL liquor (beer wine everything), all non motorized water sports. ALL INCLUSIVE. There are many other things to do in this area so that a trip like this could be made into a pretty cool vacation and get to do a Jonifest thing AND see Mayan Ruins, Fish, etc Price per person for adults 2 per room USD $1,217 per person 3 per room USD $1,177 per person 4 per room USD $1,137 per person The best deal here is the double occupancy unless you have some sort of group sex thing going as well. When I figured out what I spent for 4 days at the last NY fest I realized this is a pretty incredible deal. We are currently planning a trip with my kids for June 10-17 (kids prices btw are 2-12 years old $397 and 13-15 $667 all inclusive). If anyone is interested we are working on putting a group together tight now which will involve several 14 year olds. I thought I would get there and see what other things we would have to arrange for our group involving a performance space, workshops, etc. I took the NJC tag off to open this to discussion to everyone so no one misses out on the initial idea, we can take this back to NJC land after this one so everyone is at least aware of what is happening. I think I can safely say this album is my favorite! (Thanks Kevin!!... and quit lurking and post!!! You love this one too!) And the reason is because of the music and the purging effect of the lyrics. The protest you mention is an incredible mix with the music which puts duality not only in Joni's lyrics but also in the combination of lyrics with music. The music on this album is so fun!!! What comes across as serious protest in the lyrics is balanced by the fun in the music. I thought I was at the catholic Easter vigil when I was listening to Shadows and Light for the first time... the melody. Thanks for your awesome comments on all the songs. I thoroughly enjoyed them. What he said made perfect sense and agreed to what Ive been thinking for years. We (here in the States) need to go to a one child policy (I, myself, have no off springs). We need to consume much less here in the States (which is a good argument to become total vegetarian). And, this is the most controversial part of his talk. We need to limit immigration. We in the States should have a population of no more than 150 million. Currently, we are over 300 million, and in recent years our population size has been growing by immigration alone. This is a ver complex world wide problem. I think as American we need to re-evaluate what "quality of life" really means to us. I, myself, have followed voluntary simplicity for years. And, I would be ready to make other "sacrifices for the better of the whole, which would include giving up fishing if it comes down to that. For instants I dont own a television. I have an ATI All-In-One video card in my computer; however, the reception is so shitty in my basement apartment, I cant pick up any TV stations with it, and Im too cheap to get cable. But, I can do without all the trash thats on TV these days, anyway. Although, one concession that I have is a DVD player plugged into that video card. Im quite sure that Joni (Goodbye Blue Sky) has read Pauls book. He does paint a very pessimistic picture if we, as human beings, dont start getting our collective "shit together". And, this includes, not just us Americans, but all the English speaking countries (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the U.K.), plus western Europe. We need to lower our standard of living a little, and at the same time, bring the third worlds standard of living up to meet ours, and then we can address such issue as world wide pollution and over population. Once human standard of living issues are addressed then population densities should start to decrease. As an environmentalist and ecologist, we are looking at a population crash coming up in the not too distant future if we dont start working on these issues today. Thats my soap box for today.
