On Wednesday, Joni was briefly mentioned on TV as having a quote or the like in a new book called 'Starter For Ten' by David Nicholls. A lot of Kate Bush in it apparently. It got rave reviews. Just a quick question for those of you who have 'Travelogue' and play it on your computer. I tried for the first time to play it on mine and Disc 2 just showed up as 'if you want to play this movie download Quicktime 5'. I don't remember anyone ever posting about this. Dunno how to play Disc 2 as a regular CD. Have a great weekend. WtShake NP - 'Baby Blue' _________________________________________________________________ Tired of 56k? Oddly enough, I turned away from the tv, to look at Russ to see if he noticed. He didn't seem to. Oh well... It seems that she's been mentioned more and more in tv and movies. Not an onslaught, mind you, but at least she's there. Envious of everyone who is still discovering Joni they've never heard before... lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Feb 2004 10:13:42 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Circle Game >Mae Robertson, who covered the song on oneof her CD's, and she said that while she was sitting on her front porch working out the guitar part, her son came out, car keys in hand, and took off in the car< Wow... I can relate...that was the joni song I used to play so much in my youth relating to it from a kid's perspective of growing up...I hadn't heard that song in many many years when I went to hear Tom Rush play in the mid 90's... It was the first time I'd heard him in decades... He played that song & did it so well... it was the first time I was hearing it as a parent & it was nothing short of amazing... I was in tears with how my life had come full circle... Many in the audience were in the same space... Very poignant moment... Dear All You Wonderful JMDLers: Hi loves! My name is Patti and I've been reading along here for far too many months, waiting to jump in and say hello. (I don't like the expression "lurking" -- I prefer "thoughtfully observing and reflecting"!) As she has for many of you, Joni has provided the soundtrack for my life, starting with STAS in 1969 when I was in 9th grade. I have so many Joni moments to share, but those will have to wait a bit, because my computer usage time is limited. For now, I will enter your wonderful world with some exciting news: there is a new scholarly book being released in October 2004 entitled: "Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell, and the Torch Song Tradition." Is that cool or WHAT? I work in academia (University of Connecticut -- GO HUSKIES!) and the other day a new catalog crossed my desk from Praeger, a division of the Greenwood Publishing Group. I was fliipping through pages of what looked like some interesting books when -- OHMYGOD -- I saw the name "Joni Mitchell" and I nearly fell off my chair! I even let out a little gasp, and some colleagues came running over to see what was the matter. When they realized that it was just Patti having another Joni moment, they shook their heads with a knowing smile and went back to work. (I love all of my colleagues, but some of them JUST DON'T GET IT!!! It drives me crazy! There is, however, ONE Spanish professor who gets it. When I first brought up Joni to him, he told me that she is a "Goddess", and that Hejira is so beautiful and so powerful and so moving that he can only listen to it once a year!). Anyway, this book looks awesome. You can check it out at www.greenwood.com and enter in the author's name as Larry David Smith. (Sorry, I can't access the link at the moment to copy it for you). There is a picture of Joni on the cover (oh, my heart be still!!!) and part of the blurb reads: ".....a unique and invaluable exploration of the craft of two of the last century's most towering musical figures...." So, dear Joni-lovers, this Valentine's Day I offer you all my Joni-love and memories and moments-yet-to-come. Will you take me as I am? Will you? That explains your wonderful post! I, too, am from academia. I am a University Librarian with The University of South Florida. The book title doesn't seem to raise eyebrows for others the way it does for me. It seems especially ironic for Joni's name be linked with the term torch song. Most contemporary female singers refuse to sing torch songs any more because they traditionally put women in the role of victim. Even Streisand, who sings them once in a while because of the music, not the lyrics, apologizes when she does. And it seems like Joni broke that mold as a female singer/ songwriter who is "blue" but refuses to blame anyone but herself. And nowhere more apparent than in Little Green. So I'll be very interested to read the book. Welcome, Patti, to the posting world. Glad you are no longer lur.., I mean "thoughtfully observing and reflecting"! Both Elvis and Joni are among my favorite songwriters, so I can't wait to dig into this book when it comes out. Looking forward to hearing more of your Joni stories as you've been following her longer than I. I jumped on around the Court and Spark era but it was Hejira that really floored me & forced me to put Joni up high on my list of favorites where the air is rare. Believe me, we will all GLADLY take you as you are. :~) Bob NP: The Jody Grind, "Mood Indigo" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Feb 2004 15:03:32 -0500 From: Ken Subject: Sarah Harmer I saw Sarah Harmer at the CBC radio taping a couple of weeks ago and had a chance to have a few words with her. Her new album, out next month, was written and produced by her (for the most part) and recorded at her farm near Kingston Ont. For some snipets of it go here. http://www.rounder.com/index.php?id=album.php&catalog_id=6575 I absolutly adore a song called Dandelions In Bullet Holes which she played at the taping. Sounds slighty like the guitar from Joni's Turbulent Indigo. And harmony to die for. Ken P.S. Hi Patti - welcome! I loved hearing of your discovery, and that your colleagues were saying it was just another Joni moment. My colleagues are the same (around Joni and bicycling, especially the Tour de France...when Lance Armstrong won they were congratulating me..too funny). Keep talking. I also liked your "thoughtfully observing and reflecting" spin on lurking. I lurk...I admit it. I also go where ever I can to be with fellow lovers of the music, lyrics and worldview of Joni Mitchell. If you find yourself coming up to Boston let us know, as there are a bunch of us up in these parts. To think that she thought it "sucked" when she first wrote it (she was always so critical of herself back then)--Tom Rush said it was the best tune he had ever heard. I know that I heard it several times on AM radio during the 60's--Buffy, Tom Rush, or Ian and Silvia might have song it then. I was just a spacey kid back then (14 in '66) so I didn't pay much attention to popular music besides the Beatles, Roger Miller and Hee Haw. When I recieved the Miles of Aisles album in '74 then it all clicked-- Joni did this! Joni wrote this?!!! WOW! Circle Game held a lot of meaning for me back then and still does today.
