Hello to Joni-lovers, Joni-cover-lovers, and Joni-cover-lover-lovers everywhere! This just in, and I wanted to share it...some of you have heard Lydia van Dam's amazing Joni tribute CD, titled "Both Sides Now". Well, she's very active in the Dutch jazz scene, and she played in Amsterdam last night. One of my favorite jmdler's was there, and she sent me this report: "She played with her brand new jazzband (piano, bass, drums and saxophone). This was the set list: 1. The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines 2. Both Sides Now 3. On The Move (by Lydia van Dam & Sebastian Altekamp) 4. Starjive (also by Lydia, I think; it's the title of one of her cd's) 5. Blue Motel Room (something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue; vocals & piano) 6. All I Want 7. Love (very beautiful) 8. People's Parties (at the end she said "let's have a drink" and there was a break) 9. a jazz standard, don't know the title 10. Peacocks 11. Black Crow 12. I Wanna Fly Like an Eagle (this is what she sang, I presume it's also the title.) 13. Be Cool (vocals & bass) 14. In France They Kiss On Mainstreet 15. I Think It's Going To Rain Today (by Randy Newman) 16. an unknown classical piece for strings she wrote the words for (she said: I know there is at least one person here who will like this)" Back to me now - WOW, wish I had been there. Most of her Joni songs are off the CD, but some are not, so maybe she's got a new project in the works that will include these new arrangements. You just gave me a reason to talk about Circle Game. Hi Everybody, With so many incredible songs. . . I feel like I want to set aside time to celebrate each special one that Joni has written. . . Circle Game is a very special one in my heart, as well. Ladies of the Canyon was my first Joni Album and I first heard it when I was in college when I was 20, in 1980, at a place I loved, later named by my friends and I as "my heart, my home, Geneseo." Geneseo is a SUNY (State University of NY) college in upstate NY, 30 miles south of Rochester. It was/is a country town with a beautiful valley and I was ripe for the experiences of college life, my mind and my heart was wide open . . .and Joni was there. . through LOTC. Anyway, the Circle Game has always been near and dear to my heart. . . The simple wisdom that comes thorough in this precious song warms my soul. . .every time I hear it. I played it for my students last week. .. Every day (I teach visual arts to 12, 13 and 14 year olds. I teach them about an "Artist of the DAY," every day. (usually it's a classic type artist, eg: da Vinci, Frida Kahlo, Maxfield Parrish, Monet, etc.) So on the last day of the semester (our 40th class) the Artist of the Day was Ms.Joni Mitchell. I showed the Turbulent Indigo Poster (Like van Gogh) and I showed them all of her albums covers. I played selections from Miles of Isles and Ladies of the Canyon. Specifically, I played Circle Game and Big Yellow Taxi. She was well received, and the kids were familiar with Big Yellow Taxi From the Counting Crows (is that right?) and Janet Jackson. So, that helped to put her on the map a bit. When I played Circle Game for one of my classes, one seventh grader (his name, Manny) said "the song is sad, it reminds me of my father. " He seemed to listen to it intently. Later I asked him to tell me more. . He told me that his father was shot and killed two years ago. I could see the pain in his eyes.. . now when we see sach other . . we give each other a hug. . . sweet boy he is. .. Manny. Now, the other day I almost ran into some trouble. . .. I tell my students that, "if everyone is working we can listen to your music." But, I tell them that there's no swearing allowed in the music (and if it has heavy sexual content, the music goes off). I also tell them that, "I am sorry but I do not want to play rap, sorry, I just do not like it. .. R and B is good but no Rap (Rap is maybe okay for poetry sake, but to me rap is mostly rhythm without the melody, I do not care for it). So this new class says, "What do you like to listen to? Well, I just happened to have Miles of Aisles in the player, "JONI Mitchell," said I! I proceeded to play the CD. . . and as time went on, I realized that they seemed fairly content listening to Joni. . . And I was just doing my thing, they were working on their art projects and suddenly "Woman of Heart and Mind" comes on. Any guesses as to what I am about to say? Well, before you know it I hear Joni's line, "Fuck your strangers." ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! To myself, I was like, "GULP!" I scanned the class and no one looked up. . . .for some saving grace, no one seemed to hear that! Close call. Getting back to Circle Game. . . I play and sing this with my sister's 3 year old twin girls (This is one of my favorite Joni children's' songs) They like it. . .. . .. What I do is sing to them: "And the seasons go. . . ." And they sing out in unison, "ROUND AND ROUND." . . .and then me again, "and the painted ponies go. . .. " Them: "UP AND DOWN." We have been on the swing set doing this and you can imagine the joy it brings to my heart. . . I attach the words here. .. and I thank Joni for just one thing today. . .. For the sweet. . . . the inspirational. . . Circle Game. Thank you. Marianne THE CIRCLE GAME Yesterday a child came out to wonder Caught a dragonfly inside a jar Fearful when the sky was full of thunder And tearful at the falling of a star Then the child moved ten times round the seasons Skated over ten clear frozen streams Words like, when you're older, must appease him And promises of someday make his dreams And the seasons they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down We're captive on the carousel of time We can't return we can only look behind From where we came And go round and round and round In the circle game Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town And they tell him, Take your time, it won't be long now Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down And the seasons they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down We're captive on the carousel of time We can't return we can only look behind From where we came And go round and round and round In the circle game So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty Before the last revolving year is through And the seasons they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down We're captive on the carousel of time We can't return, we can only look behind From where we came And go round and round and round In the circle game JONI MITCHELL 1966-69 Siquomb Publishing Co. I was also concerned that she might be an "over-the-board" animal rights advocate (such as a PETA person). Those people try to push their "religious"(moral, ethical) believe systems on others. And, there is freedom of religion in this country the last time I looked. However, I am a rabid environmentalist! Granted, there are some aspects of outdoor (blood) sports I dislike such as big game trophy hunting and bass tournaments (which are far too commercialized). Although, if you like to eat venison I see nothing wrong in legally taking a deer down during hunting season--as long as you are respectful about it (towards your quarry, yourself and other people). I myself enjoy bird hunting (rough grouse and turkeys). It's a challenge. And, of course, I mainly fish. Now here's the paradox with me. I have been a reader of Alan Watts for over thirty years. However, there are certain aspects of Tibetan Buddhism that I agree with such as re-incarnation. To the Zen Buddhists it really doesn't matter whether you live on after death or not as long as you realize the essence of the life you are presently experiencing. If I embrace Tibetan Buddhist I will become a full-fledged vegetarian (however, I'm pretty darn close to being one right now). If I continue in my Zen ways it doesn't matter that much. I was raise Christian (and I occasionally attend services at Unity Churches). If you know anything about the Unity Church (not Unitarian) it would be reaaaally streeeetching it to call them "fundamentalist". They are opposite of that and have a believe system very similar to Buddhism, except that Jesus is their "Buddha". And, I believe that Jesus and Buddha are one in the same. Enough of this religious balony (bulls*it)....I'll never bring it up again. At the Warner Bros. taping of Painting with Words and Music, many of Joni's paintings were displayed and one of them, I recall, was set in a forest near water and showed a hand holding out what looked like a beautiful fly-fishing lure. It would be interesting to know how culturally bound an appreciation of June Tabor is, has she a peculiarly "English" appeal? (I used to think that about Richard Thompson, but I know he is very popular in USA? What I'm driving it is that to me in a way Echo of Hooves is June exploring the heritage of English music while on BSN Joni tries something similar with a vastly different American heritage - and I can enjoy both, and they both "work". A few years back, June crossed a few boundaries by making an album with the Oyster Band, called (I think) Freedom and Rain, which is worth checking out if anyone is interested. P.S. It was good to see, ini the "today in history" section, a review of NIght Ride Home from Feb 1991 when it was released (can it really be 13 years?) I remember it so well - I hadn't particularly liked her 80's threesome, and I fell in love all over again with NTR and Slouchoing Towards Bethlehem. This album rarely seems to get a mention as anyone's favourite (vexed question, I know) but reading the article sent me back to it again, and yes, I can report, still as fresh, as contradictory and confusing and illuminating and obscure and obvious and life-affirming and downright beautiful as ever. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 2004 23:27:11 EST From: PassScribe@aol.com Subject: Re.: Finding Joni << From: "Tom Barker" Subject: Hello!
