Posthumously, he won Best Contemporary Folk Album--hey, whatever works!!--and Best Rock Performance by Group or Duo with Vocal, along with Bruce Springsteen. Zevon's son Jordan gave a touching and poised acceptance speech for the second award, which was the only win of the two that was broadcast. And a Joni song was part of a rather touching moment of the telecast, which I didn't fully catch the first time around, but only when I rewound the tape. For the "In Memoriam" part of the program, the Grammys memorialized those who passed away in the last year by grouping together artists who worked more or less in the same genre, and displaying their pictures to the accompaniment of some representative song. When the show was actually being broadcast, I heard a few bars to "The Last Time I Saw Richard" while at my kitchen table paying bills; by the time I raced to the TV, I couldn't tell what its significance was. But after I went back to watch the tape, I saw that the first artist whose picture was displayed after Joni's song began playing was John Guerin. Nice touch, I thought, even though there's not an exact biographical connection there. The moment "worked." I missed a half an hour between alicia keys (tribute to luther) & the very end of yoko speaking on behalf of john... So, what'd I miss? LOVED Sting, Matthews & Gill doing a beatles song! & loved the great EW&F & of course Sarah Mc... & Prince too... Oh & yay the Zevon win! His son has his smile... Nice to see Carole King up there too! Nice long Joni piano moment when they were doing the memorials ... I usually avoid awards shows but decided to give it a shot last eve for luther and for joan. Got through the Luther tribute and both Alicia and Celine (Celine of all people) mucked up their tunes, badly, but gotta give em some credit for the effort. Some folks shouldn't perform live. Broke my heart to see Luther in his present condition but was very happy to see him being able to speak as well as he did. I, not being as kind, grown-up, or as diplomatic as Kate, didn't enjoy the Beatles number done earlier in the broadcast and thought they stunk it up badly. Couldn't help but think what perfection the fab four were with their harmonies. After sitting through the dreadful Aguilera performance, and subsequent win, and a win by 'I wanta have soul but don't' Timberlake, I had to give up and turn the mess off. Nevertheless, would have loved to have seen Joan win. mack np: Hall and Oates-still not in the hall of fame. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Feb 2004 20:10:40 +0000 From: "c Karma" Subject: Joni photo question Are there any known photos published or viewable on line of Joni and "Bluebird?" I'd never heard of the reference but when I did a search I came up with this tidbit from JM.com: "In late 1987 Joni's favorite car, a Mercedes-Benz nicknamed "Bluebird" was stolen. She deeply missed the vehicle: She'd purchased it with her very first royalty check in 1969, so the sentimental value was great." I can't recall a pic of Joni and a Benz, but maybe somebody out there has one. It's great that it got the award, but i think they should've chosen a different piece from travelogue (like maybe Dawntreader?). I like many of the arrangements esp. on disc 1 - that one just sounds more like a funeral procession though imo. I'm surprised they didn't do more for the lifetime achievement awards; I know I shouldn't be really, but... And people I was hoping for solo performances from, like Emmylou Harris - i thought maybe she'd do 'Strong Hand', after they showed the people who died last year; well she did sing (in the group of people). It was really nice to hear the intro of 'Last Time I saw Richard' but you'd think they'd choose something John Guerin actually played on.... rachel (delurking briefly) _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=dept/bcomm&pgmarket=en-ca&RU=http%3a%2f%2fjoin.msn.com%2f%3fpage%3dmisc%2fspecialoffers%26pgmarket%3den-ca ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Feb 2004 18:25:44 -0600 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: Grammys (some Joni content) It was right when they showed John Guerin's pic, but he did not play on that one. The direction was pitiful. I have seen beteer camera direction on kids shows. If anyone taped it and got the credits I would love to know who was the director. One thing amazing thing was some of the set design. Especially during Beyonce's solo performance I thought that look was incredible. It was a very stiff show though. Very little showing the audience, no banter that seemed real, THAT was a Beatles tribute???? Shit I LOVE Dave, and Sting and Vince Gill for that matter but "I Saw Her Standing There" and ONLY one song???? I would kill to have been chosen to produce this years show. I venture to say that I could have done a much better job. Best Paz > I usually avoid awards shows but decided to give it a shot last eve for > luther and for joan. Well it worked for me cause it was Joni but how did it work for John?" Right: the song wasn't for him; he didn't play on it, and, as far as I can ascertain, he and Joni didn't even *know* one another when it was recorded. But my guess is that it worked for John because: 1) many of the people there--at least, of a certain vintage--would have made the connection between Joni and John, as I did, and 2) the song, if you don't analyze it too carefully in its entirety, is about seeing someone for "the last time," and a kind of mourning. That's my take! Take care, Mary. P.S. Although my plans these days seem to be written in Tentative Time, it IS my intention to attend Jonifest, 2004! I appear to be on the "every other year" plan: or, for you golf fans out there, if it's a Ryder Cup year, I'll be there. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Feb 2004 21:56:22 EST From: BRYAN8847@aol.com Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2004 #66 - Grammy broadcast Subject: Re: Joni wins a Grammy!
