No, I don't believe Joni has ever applied for U.S. citizenship. So, no, she's not eligible to vote in U.S. elections. I wonder, though, does she travel back to Canada to participate in Canadian elections? As I pondered all our witty comments about it, I got to some serious thinking. A nice formal invitation- done by one of our group's artists. Let's invite her for a day. Not the whole weekend. Just a day to visit, observe. No performance (although how many of us would give just about anything to see her perform live again- but that's beside the point.) but be open to it IF she offers. I'll say one thing- IF she would show up and stay for the Sat. eve performance time, I would NOT do any of her material in my set!! ;-) It's really not all that crazy. I know a parrot head and Jimmy Buffett doesn't have any qualms about showing up at one of their gatherings. Now I'm not comparing Joni to Jimmy, but... stranger things have happened. Jon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Feb 2004 15:24:15 -0500 From: "jlobello" Subject: My Joni encounter OK Folks, Here's my Joni story. I was within inches of Joni when I lived in Tallahassee, FLA in 1975(or 76) as I walked by her going into a "alternative" jewelry store that friends of mine owned. Sure, I noticed her--a beautiful woman like her--, but I didn't recognize her (she had shades on). As I entered the store I said to my friend (the owner), "Boy, that was a good lookin' woman," And holding up her VISA receipt as proof, he said, "Hey man. That was Joni Mitchell!" Will, I shot out of that store just in time to see her trying to pull into traffic with what I suppose was the "Bluebird". I was pretty fast back then, and could have caught up with her car before it accelerated, but what was I going to say, "Da. Can I have your autograph, ma'am?" So, I let her go and forgot about her. Besides, I wanted more--to be able to talk to her for a minute or two, possibly find out where she was staying in town and get her phone number, and offer to show her the area--that kind of stuff. She was in town with the Rolling Thunder Revue (It had to be May or June), but did not perform for some reason. Bob Dylan, Joan Beaz, Roger McQuin and Kinky Freeman (of the Texas Jew Boy) performed, but Joni and James (Taylor) didn't. From what I understand from friends she stayed in town for a week or two after the others left. I wish I would have ran into her again back then. So, now you know why meeting her is such an itch I need to scratch. I think I might have gotten my dates screwed up. I have to draw a "time-line". Helen gave me the Miles of Aisles Album on my 22nd b-day (not my 23d) in Feb of '74, so both Court and Spark and Miles of Aisles Album had to come out early in 1974 ( like January) if Jim's dates on the discography are correct (from Jonimitchell.com) website. But, I think that Jim and Wally Breeze (RIP) had the Court and Spark release date wrong because my copy (the original vinyl) shows the copy right date to be 1973. So if the Rolling Thunder Revue came to Tallahassee in '75 I would have been a "Jonifanatic" for a year and a half. If it had arrived there in"76 then I would have been into Joni for two and a half years approximately. I can't remember the exact date, but either way the above incident would have happened when the Rolling Thunder Revue was in Tally. After consulting her appearance dates (jonimitchell.com) it shows that she joined the Rolling Thunder Revue (RTR) in November of '75, and if that tour schedule went through the winter into '76 then I had to have seen the RTR and her in May or June of '76. The weather was hot at the time. The only time I have seen her live was on her Shadows and Light tour in '79. I was in Portland, Oregon at the time, but I remember driving to Tacoma to see her perform at the King dome. And, that appearance is not on Jim's list. She performed in Vancouver BC on 9-02-79 and at Portland on 9-03-79. The Portland performance was sold out, and there was such an out cry about her not stopping in the Seattle area that they squeezed the Tacoma performance in. It's reasonable to see why that performance didn't get on the list. Thanks for putting up with my "mental" exercise. Gene adds some wonderful insights that I know you would be interested in. I was really surprised that he responded so quickly with Ed's passing being so sudden and all..... They were the the 2nd Fret tapes. Ed recorded 2 sets of Joni's at the Second Fret Coffeehouse---at 19th and Sansom Street in downtown Philadelphia. These tapes have been played on WMMR anmd othet FM stations through the years and have probably been bootleggged too. She did Morning in Morningtown, Just like Me, Circle Game, The Gallery, and many other early favorites. Ed Sciaky who taped these shows was a Temple U Student who did his own radio show on the college station, WRTI (low power FM) and helped me with my show on WHAT-FM a high powered commercial FM station in Philly. Joni came on my show on WHAT-FM a number of times. She was interviewed on my shows at the same time Dave Van Ronk (who suggested that she call her song "Both Sides Now"---- "Clouds". Gordon Lightfoot, Chris Smither, Leonda and The Young Tradition (British folk group) were also part of the interviews I did with Joni. Joni wrote "Both Sides Now" while in Philadelphia and perfomed it live on my radio show 3 days after she wrote it. She told me that she had been reading a book called "Henderson. The Rain King" by Saul Bellow when she came across the line about flying in an airliner and seeing clouds "from both sides now". That's what led to that wonderful song. While watching the Justin and Janet show (which was in such incredibly poor taste that it had met all the technical standards for pornography IMO - including "without redeeming social value - well before the infamous "peekaboo"), I was quoting Joni's lines from TTT for my wife: "I'm a runaway from the record biz From the hoods in the hood and the whiny white kids Boring....... Formula music, Girlie guile Genuine junkfood for juveniles Up and down the dial......" Then came the "artful finale". Ugh ! One sad realization for me as I listened to TTT last week was that Joni really sounds sincere in this song. Not her most artistic work, by any means - but an apparently heartfelt (I find it convincing) statement of her disillusionment. Gone was the spirit of JOTMAS "You've got to shake your fists at lightning now You've got to roar like forest fire You've got to spread your light like blazes All across the sky They're going to aim the hoses on you Show 'em you won't expire Not till you burn up every passion Not even when you die Come on now You've got to try If you're feeling contempt Well then you tell it If you're tired of the silent night Jesus well then you yell it Condemned to wires and hammers Strike every chord that you feel That broken trees And elephant ivories conceal" Replaced now by "I'm so sick of this game It's hip ! It's hot Life's too short The whole thing's gotten Boring !" And no new compositions since TTT (5+ years gone now). Sigh. I Think I Understand.
