If it has, I don't remember (therefore, it wasn't discussed, as far as I'm concerned.) As a person who almost always looks at life from both sides now and therefore has difficulty deciding on such things as what to wear, what to have for dinner, who to vote for and so on... I think there are valid arguments made for both sides. On the one hand, if you boycott something (whether it was products from South Africa at the time, or being part of a show put on in South Africa at the time), you may be showing your disdain for apartheid and proving your point that way. On the other hand, you would potentially also be depriving the population you want to help of income because they could potentially be earning income off the goods you would be buying from their (apartheid) country. As a performing artist, presumably you would also be performing for the black and "coloured" population of South Africa, as well as for the white people. As a performing artist, you could make some kind of statement, overt or covert depending on how lucky you were feeling, in your act. Yes, the almight dollar speaks but I'm sure Linda Ronstadt could have made big bucks performing elsewhere (unless her career was in a slump at the time and SA was all there was, in which case, maybe she needed the money enough to go?). I wonder what Linda would say about it now? ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Jan 2004 16:41:31 -0800 From: "kakki" Subject: Re: Joni, will you come to the fest? Hi Steven, What a cool story about you and your friends orchestrating the meeting and jam session with Harry Chapin! He was very beloved. I think those kinds of things may have happened more "back in the day" than now. Life and the music scene was a little more free form and not as "corporatized" and made distanced and complex by agents and legalities as today and performers seemed more inclined to meet up and hang out. I have friends who have had similar experiences and I've had a few myself (but only with those who had come up back then). I think Joni could have an inclination to get together, but she could also have an inclination not to! Hard to say. Hope you are staying safe! It's easy to get caught up in certain protest tactics because one believes in the underlying cause, but the reality is that many innocent people can be hurt by them while the powerful go on to find another way to land on their feet. It would be interesting to hear what Ron might say about those days. I recall that Linda was very popular at the time (so I assume she was already earning lots of money) and I don't know what her motivation was - maybe she has discussed it somewhere in some interview. The catagory was "Rock Music", the clue for $1,000; the answer was: "She made her top 40 debut with 1972's, You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio." Guess what? No one knew... (what a bunch of losers! ;-) ) Of course I knew but I don't get the thousand dollars. Alex said, after time expired & the beeper sounded, "And the 'she" in this case is Joni Mitchell." For those of you following the saga of my Panasonic DVD player that wouldn't... well, PLAY... it would play a DVD for a few minutes and then mysteriously just STOP, or worse, turn off completely. And the DVD that had the most problems was the new "Shadows and Light" DVD tht I got for Chrustmas. (I have an older VHS copy but I really wanted to watch/hear the quality of the DVD.) Anyway, I took the CD cleaning disc (with the little brush on it, to clean the laser lens) from my stereo and ran it through the DVD player. I then took my CD/DVD cleaning kit that my son gave me for Christmas and sprayed and cleaned ALL my DVD's (since I only have a dozen or so-including the JoniFest DVDs- this was no big deal. When I was done, I put S&L back in and played it... it played longer than ever before but still cut out three times. I next pressed "set-up" in my DVD player menu and went through all the options, even changing a few although I had no idea what i was doing on a few but I figured, "what the hey... it doesn't work worth a damn anyway." Anyhow, when I got all finished screwing around, I put the S&L disc back in andbmiracle of miraclesb it played all the way through with no problems. I tried each of my other discs and they all played with no problems. I even left the machine on and various discs playing for hours while I did other chores and things throughout the night and next day... everything kept playing with no cutting out. I checked the settings I had changed when I was screwing with the set-up menu and some had changed back to "default" settings. But all my DVD's are continuing to play with no problems, so I don't know what's happened but I'm happy. BTW, I LOVE that performance of "Shadows & Light" Joni does at the end of the show with the Persuasions and that organ-like keyboard backing them... they sound so good together! I get chills up & down my spine when I hear those harmonies bewtween Joni & the guys; I like to turn that baby up 'til the windows in my den vibrate to certain chords from the keyboard. And, to celebrate my DVD player finally working right, I watched my favorite movie, Harold & Maude (on DVD of course) after we took down the Christmas tree and decorations today. I've probably seen that movie a dozen times but I laugh and cry everytime I watch it... any other H&M lovers out there?
