Joni wouldn't talk to Karen so she had to use sources who would. Karen did her homework and thoroughly documented her sources. If one's read all of the interviews through the decades (as most of us have), there's little that's new. For me, it was worth it to read up on the polio, and the details of finding the right 1st label. JMDLers made copies of unreleased recordings for Karen, the appearances, probably the discography, and certainly with the list of Joni's songs which other artists have also recorded. Many of us were given credits but none of us "share" the profits. Obviously the only attraction was the Joni songs. The truth - I was choked, CHOKED I say. I havent blubbed and spluttered and made really odd spontaneous noises in a public space since E.T. The trigger was the Prime Minister putting down the US President and as a Brit living in Ireland I came over all patriotic and proud (something i havent felt for a long long time), after that the flood gates were open and even the slightest stroke of the heart strings got my body convulsing and spasming. So all you nay sayers and candy jeerers - fuck off and stop sticking yer noses in the air. Love works in mysterious ways. Peace and Love, actually. We know that Joni sees many of her songs as films in her head - she says she's a very visual person. Call it a film, a story, a poem, a song or a journey, these expressions of creativity are all inter-related. The journey seems to be a recurrent theme in Joni's work. Some are physical, outter journeys, while others are metaphysical, inner journeys; many songs combine elements of both. Here are some of my favourite Joni journey songs. I'd be curious to read what Tegan comes up with! I found your choices interesting, since many people on this list would look to Joni's earlier work for their top picks. While I enjoy most of Joni's earlier work, I especially enjoy her late work - I feel closer to her when I hear recordings that feature her voice as it sounds today; I recognize her mature speaking voice. Her first record is also beautiful, imo, since it features a calmer, deeper voice - before she settled into her ``helium`` register ! Many places in the film reminded me of rehashed versions of Notting Hill and Four Weddings, etc. I wish Laura Linney's character would have been fleshed out more. I totally didn't understand why the story had to be so cluttered with subplot. For me, so far this year, my top five films are: Lost in Translation The Cooler The Station Agent Mystic River and........ Something's Got to Give Will check out Monsoon Wedding as it received a "two thumbs up" from you Azeem! Any one else care to chime in??? Let me say that I have yet to see Return of the King, so that may change above selections!!!
