As for my favorite version of Woodstock, I'd probably choose the one form Joni's Nov. 1998 Madison Sqaure Garden concert. I accepted Rob, but luckily a warning went off. It makes me think of the Joni Mitchell song, '...hot hot blazes come down to smoke and ash'." Of course it is also true that words KEEP you interested but the music grabs your interest beforehand. I agree too (with someone else, not Vince) that reading lyrics ('Songs in the Key of Life' is one I remember particularly well) without the music is a ho-hum experience, but add the two together and you're off to the races. I did not know Black Eyed Peas much (saw them on the billboards awatds last wednesday, maybe 2nd or 3rd time I have seen them) and so when the song that he insisted on started playing, I hear this funky r&b rap thing and I am thinking, ok, cool, this is his taste, that's cool and it was a great sound - and then the words starting seeping into my head and I looked at him in wonder... asked him about it and he said this was the song he loved, he had seen the video on MTV a lot and wanted the song for the words - we high fived, he played the song over and over and over (the entire ride home that is all he played, kept hitting the repeat button), and I got choked up and he asked me if I were going to cry and I told him no but I almost did - when an 8 year old who is deeply influenced by someone like me picks out a song like this as his song of the year, somehow, something has been done right... it was my Christmas moment of a lifetime, hope lives --- and it turns out Justin Timberlake is featured on this song so I will not listen to any more knocks on Timberlake - he has developed into an accomplished artist all this time, has been doing some good work - of all the songs he could choose to be associated with, this is the one he chose - Vince and now for you all, the lyrics of Black Eyed Peas "Where is the Love" and hope lives, hope lives, from my grandson to you: What's wrong with the world, mama People livin' like they ain't got no mamas I think the whole world addicted to the drama Only attracted to things that'll bring you trauma Overseas, yeah, we try to stop terrorism But we still got terrorists here livin' In the USA, the big CIA The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK But if you only have love for your own race Then you only leave space to discriminate And to discriminate only generates hate And when you hate then you're bound to get irate, yeah Badness is what you demonstrate And that's exactly how it works and operates you gotta have love just to set it straight Take control of your mind and meditate Let your soul gravitate to the love, y'all, y'all People killin', people dyin' Children hurt and you hear them cryin' Can you practice what you preach And would you turn the other cheek Father, Father, Father help us Send us some guidance from above 'Cause people got me, got me questionin' Where is the love (Love) Where is the love (The love) Where is the love (The love) Where is the love The love, the love It just ain't the same, always unchanged New days are strange, is the world insane If love and peace is so strong Why are there pieces of love that don't belong Nations droppin' bombs Chemical gasses fillin' lungs of little ones With the ongoin' sufferin' as the youth die young So ask yourself is the lovin' really gone So I could ask myself really what is goin' wrong In this world that we livin' in people keep on givin' in Makin' wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends Not respectin' each other, deny thy brother A war is goin' on but the reason's undercover The truth is kept secret, it's swept under the rug If you never know truth then you never know love Where's the love, y'all, come on (I don't know) Where's the truth, y'all, come on (I don't know) Where's the love, y'all People killin', people dyin' Children hurt and you hear them cryin' Can you practice what you preach And would you turn the other cheek Father, Father, Father help us Send us some guidance from above 'Cause people got me, got me questionin' Where is the love (Love) Where is the love (The love) Where is the love (The love) Where is the love The love, the love I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder As I'm gettin' older, y'all, people gets colder Most of us only care about money makin' Selfishness got us followin' our own direction Wrong information always shown by the media Negative images is the main criteria Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria Kids act like what they see in the cinema Yo', whatever happened to the values of humanity Whatever happened to the fairness in equality Instead in spreading love we spreading animosity Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' under That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' down There's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin' under Gotta keep my faith alive to lovers bound People killin', people dyin' Children hurt and you hear them cryin' Can you practice what you preach And would you turn the other cheek Father, Father, Father help us Send us some guidance from above 'Cause people got me, got me questionin' Where is the love (Love) Where is the love (The love) Where is the love (The love) Where is the love (The love) Where is the love (The love) Where is the love (The love) Where is the love (The love) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Dec 2003 13:01:19 -0500 From: vince Subject: apologies to joni onlys I just posted something and forgot the njc tag - CRIPES! What is there in this life if we can not connect with one another? I have not been to a Jonifest, but have been able to meet up with and CONNECT with others on this list in person or off-list by choice. No one person is perfect, no list is perfect, but isn't that the beauty? There is great beauty in reaching out and making that connection blindly sometimes. I can not tell you how enriched I feel due to this list. I do not post often, and I take what I like and leave the rest. I have learned so much about Joni's music and life, it is unreal (and other musicians.) I have learned even more about the power of connecting!!!There is an old saying about if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem (or something like that). You mostly get out of it WHAT you put into something. I guess it depends on what level you choose to involve yourself. I know my doubting husband was blown away when we met up with a Jonilist member in person (love you Paz) recently. He could not imagine such love and generosity just from being on a list and posting to one another! Just a little venting there... on a lighter note I had a very vivid dream I was at Joni's house with her and she was showing me all around. I woke up and could have sworn I was really there conversing with her. Anyone care to interpret??? So it's alittle of both. Yeah, I have to renege too. I first said I was a "words first" person, but now I take that back. I think initially the music draws me in, and then I listen to the lyrics. If the lyrics really suck, I probably won't keep listening to the music - on the other hand, sometimes it's just the beat - if it's good "beat" music, you just want to dance to it, so who cares about the words? If it's vocal music (um, yeah, there wouldn't be lyrics without that, eh?), then it's sometimes the particular voice of the singer that draws me in - if I don't care for the voice, it's hard to hear the lyrics. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Dec 2003 16:30:24 -0600 From: "Happy The Man" Subject: Re: Grace suggestions Hey what's wrong with Irish Bars, many of Guiness were put down then rather listen to a dry lecture at divinity school.
