Although it's not the first Joni song I'd recommend to somebody new to to Joni-land, I'm amazed at how often I find myself "singing" (note those inverted commas) this track as go about my daily drudge. And a great album it is. And Charlie is also on Michael Brecker's record "The Nearness Of You," along with Jack DeJohnette, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, and James Taylor (the last three of whom, in addition to Brecker, certainly qualify this post as Joni-related). And a great album that is, too. The original question mentioned hearing something of Charlie's on the radio recently, and while it could be almost anything, I wonder if it was from his most recent record "American Dreams." However, I was surprised to see that Smokin' (Empty, Try Another) topped the least favorite list of DED. It's such a clever song and the harmonies are beautiful. I find the song also interesting in a personal way, as I often find myself humming harmonies to the coffee machine, vacuum cleaner, or the photocopier and her song makes me feel a little less strange (vs. being a normal human being). Also, I like the way that Joni weaves contemporary things into her songs - e.g. "white lines on the freeway", "silver power lines gleam" (I've never thought of power lines as being beautiful in any way, but this phrase makes them seem so), "could put a coin in the door of a john", "Javex bottles on the tide", "runs in her nylons", "the wires in the walls", "broadside accident", "flat tires", etc. Marian ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Dec 2003 07:35:54 -0800 (PST) From: Jenny Goodspeed Subject: Sweet Sixteen - Carey I forgot to mention...Judd's fantastic cover of Carey can be found on his latest CD available at www.cdbaby.com. shameless plug is now over. The reactions were varied, mostly enthusiastic. Most of them were quite taken by Terry Gonda's version of "Both Sides Now" (I suspect they don't really know much of Joni's repertoire and they singled her out because of song familiarity) while others liked Melissa Errico's voice. Personally, I can't get enough of Judd Grossman's "Carey" and the way his voice goes to so many musical places I wouldn't dream anyone would go to (not even Joni). I was also floored by Pam Bricker's slow-fire version of "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" which she imbues with a warm sensuality that is both irresistibly sexy and downhome cozy. Potent combination. I am checking her albums out. But the one that really made me press the repeat button was Itxaso's version of "Cherokee Louise". My first reaction was, "where did she come from?" "how come I have never heard of someone sing so sexily without prettifying the voice/sound?" I have this thing for singers singing in English with foreign inflections/accents and Itxaso zoomed right up in my list. If you can find a videotape of Celebratuion of Big Sur, I believe that Joni acts a bit political in that - of course political is different things to different people - in 1969, 1970, no one was asking anyone to be partisan - the political statements were against the war, against the draft, for civil rights, things that seem assumed now but were incredibly controversial back then - so while Joni never said "Vote McGovern" in 1972 (maybe because she was/is a citizen of another country) one knew she would if she could! That last line of Woodstock, as well as Fiddle and the Drum, remember the times, those were political statements of some import back then. Of course now a days a right wing neanderthal would stand behind the presidential podium and say the last line of Woodstock as good drama to co-opt the sentiment - but when Joni sang it, we all knew who was on what side. At some point her songs moved away from introspection somewhat, and her 80's albums included social and political content. Not to say that she did not reference things within a song- "more about the war and the bloody changes". "Banquet" from 1972 seems to be a musing about class and wealth, (and as Pink Floyd sang, "with/without/and who'll deny that's what the fighting's all about.) I hope it's not true that I have nothing better to do that look at sales on Amazon.com -- but it's true that sales of BSN have gone up dramatically since the film was released. Has been averaging at around #400 for a few weeks now (and was in the 3,000-4,000 range before). Is also in the top 1,000 on towerrecords.com. I'll go find something better to do. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Dec 2003 02:39:08 -0500 From: ljirvin@jmdl.com Subject: Today's Library Links: December 3 On December 3 the following articles were published: 1982: "Wild Things Run Fast" - BAM (Review - Album) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=564 1987: "Charge Filed in Musician's Death" - Miami Herald (Mention) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=927 2002: "Joni Mitchell's Blue" - RollingStone.com (Interview) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=1033 2002: "Travelogue" - Toronto Star (Review - Album) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=1029 ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2003 #376 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
