I note the presence of Amelia on your list - that reminded me of Mr. Rockwell's NY Times review of T, the better part of which was spent on describing the charms of Amelia in its earlier incarnations. Apparently you did not hate the T version as much as he did ?" Apparently not...Amelia & ACOY are typically top contenders for Joni's best song, so any tinkering with them is going to generate some controversy. I tried to respond with as much integrity & honesty as I could, regardless of what the critics said. I went back just now & read the 11/19 reviews of the record and it's obvious that this is a very complex work, not really one that can be dismissed with a simple "this sucks" or "this rocks". You're keeping up with fractions down to the thirteenths? I've got lots of 1/2's and 1/3's on the "most favorite/least favorite" poll but no thirteenths. Whenever someone said "All of them" or "None of them" I just disregarded it. I'll have all the results posted (44 responses so far) this weekend. Is that what we're now calling the Walk of Fame? I think setting up a star for her would make an excellent *birthday present* from her admirers here on the JMDL, next year. I'll help if you like. I wonder if Nonesuch/Reprise Records, Geffen Records, and Shout! (the company who put out the USA version of the SHADOWS AND LIGHT DVD), would like a piece of the action. What better way to show her how cool she is? The Walk of Fame, as far as I know, is up and down Hollywood Blvd., which was pretty seedy last time I was there ('97). - --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2003 12:24:22 -0800 From: "kakki" Subject: Re: Joni star Murphy wrote: > No,Jim. That's right and they are still putting in fresh prints there from time to time. However, a star location in front of Grauman's/Mann's has always been considered choice. >The Walk of Fame, as far as I know, is up and down Hollywood Blvd., which was >pretty seedy last time I was there ('97). It's up and down Hollywood and also Vine and a few other streets. You must come see Hollywood Blvd. again - it has been tremendously renovated, restored and revitalized since 1997 and is a top destination once again. The Kodak Theatre complex, where they are now hosting the Academy Awards, is fantastic. A funny aside - there was a group, whose name I forget, that spearheaded the Hollywood makeover. One faction in the group, however, wanted to clear out all the seedy businesses. The other faction argued that those seedy shops have always been on the Blvd. since the 1920s and it would be historically inaccurate to eliminate them and would be worse to make it all look like some new mall. The historically accurate faction won, so the seedy shops remain in place and have all been spiffed up LOL Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2003 12:14:14 -0800 From: "kakki" Subject: Re: re Joni star > I seem to remember Joni saying somewhere that people buy those stars - do we > know if this is true? No, you have to be nominated and selected and reviewed by a number of groups, but the person or group nominating you have to pay for the installation and maintenance, ceremony costs, etc. and I think a portion also goes to the Hollywood Historic Trust. Unfortunately the movie itself was not so grand. Unless you're a big fan of unrequited romantic love between young gorgeous women with exquisite skin and men 5 to 20 years older with considerably more wrinkles. ; ) did have a very good Altman-sized cast though. enjoy, jenny Free Pop-Up Blocker - Get it now ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2003 00:58:23 +0100 From: "Laurent Olszer" Subject: Joni on french TV Hi Laurent, and I see you've copied out friend Thierry on the message! One way to introduce Joni to a wider French audience is to have French musicians cover her songs, like Thierry does on his website - check it out: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/yoghill/ThArecs.htm Besides the excellent guitar work and Thierry's wonderful voice, check out which Joni songs he does - Hoo Ha!! Bob Hi, The Joni segment on TV just ended. Middle of the road commentary. A couple of excerpts, 1 stupid IMO: "Blue was her masterpiece and then she tried getting out of depression by exploring other musical styles". The other one I like better: "Mingus was an amazing and misunderstood album". Also the reporter mentioned Joni fought off cancer successfully. I didn't know about that. I asked Thierry if he could transcribe DED and the man did it! He's waiting for me to try playing it on guitar to send his work to JMDL guitar database. Amazing. Very bad cassettes. It wasn't "shot" with a budget on 35mm like a movie either. They just had people running around, documentary style, with 16mm cameras. I didn't make that up, about CSN. They actually used film of a different CSN concert and pasted it into the Woodstock movie. They weren't happy with their performance." >> Jim: I've read a lot of books on CSN and Woodstock and I've never come across any mention of the CSN footage in the movie being from another concert.
