So even though the sun is shining this Sunday afternoon and I really want to get out to the park with my dog before another working week beckons, I must and will get my homework done! And it was difficult, as you can see from some of my cheating "double entry" answers! OK, here goes: Song To A Seagull: Most Favorite - Michael from Mountain (closely followed by Nathan La Franeer) Least Favorite - Song to a Seagull Clouds: Most Favorite - Chelsea Morning Least Favorite - Roses Blue Ladies Of The Canyon: Most Favorite - Rainy Night House Least Favorite - The Arrangement Blue: Most Favorite - All I Want Least Favorite - My Old Man For The Roses: Most Favorite - Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire (closely followed by Electricity) Least Favorite - The Blonde in the Bleachers Court & Spark: Most Favorite - Just Like This Train (or Trouble Child? Can't decide!) Least Favorite - Dow to You Miles of Aisles: Most Favorite - A Case of You Least Favorite - The Last Time I saw Richard Hissing Of Summer Lawns: Most Favorite - Edith and the Kingpin (closely followed by the Jungle Line) Least Favorite - Sweet Bird Hejira: Most Favorite - Amelia (closely followed by Song for Sharon) Least Favorite - A Strange Boy Don Juan's Reckless Daughter: Most Favorite - Don Juan's Reckless Daughter Least Favorite - 10th World Mingus (the 'raps' don't count): Most Favorite - The Wolf that lives in Lindsey Least Favorite - Sweet Sucker Dance Shadows & Light: Most Favorite - Coyote Least Favorite - Why do Fools... I thought I was quite a well balanced "middle period" person (i.e. liked Hejira and Hissing most, with equal likes and dislikes for the earlier and later years), but in fact I found that I liked the early years MUCH more than the later ones. With any of the early and middle records, I was hard pressed to find "least favourites", whereas with the last 7 or 8 albums (except TI and BSN) I really had to pick "most favourites" that I like less than the "least favourites" of some of the other albums. And the worst experience was going through Travelogue again. I had hoped that absence would have made my heart fonder. But to the contrary, as soon as I played it again, my heart filled with dread. I so wanted to have the Bobsart experience and find a neat collection that I could like, and yes I did the exercise, but to be honest: even if I put this "favourite half" collection together, it would never get played again, because my time is precious and there is simply too much other, more enjooyable music (Joni and non Joni) to be heard. Anyway, since I did it, I might as well post it for my good friend Bobsart's exercise. So for what it is worth, here is my list of 11 Travelogue songs that I ... ahem, dislike least. (in order of appearance) Amelia Love Sire of Sorrow Trouble Child God Must be a Boogie Man Just Like this Train Hejira Cherokee Louise Dawntreader Borderline Circle Game Well now that I've proved that I'm still alive and subscribed to the list, I'll just quickly say hello to all good people that I haven't said hello to for so long. Thinking of you often, even if I just don't get the chance to make contact - but all my best! Lieve. ______________________________________________________________ This message may contain privileged information. This approach is sadly missing these days... I am also someone who does not care for joni's later works as much as her earlier ones... it is my opinion that as good a writer as she is, she lost something of her 'writing in own blood' as she matured...to my mind this does not have to mean suffering (as in bleeding) rather than writing from her own experience...(& I know there are exceptions to this in her 80's works)...but by her own admission in the who&m dvd her best work was when she was hurting...i do not wish for her to suffer to write as she has given so much...i wish her only happiness these days...but few artists can sustain the same level of consistancy throughout their career...i think this is as it should be so that we will have new voices to listen to... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Nov 2003 11:17:26 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Woodstock >I suspect the spiritual aspect of this song is what motivated Joni to set it to the more somber, melancholy music she chose in recording and performing it...I think it ironic that Jamie offers in his reply the concept of time and generation as a possible explanation for his not "getting it" (just as Joni does in the song itself - "maybe it is just the time of year, or maybe it's the time of man")... I caught a part where they were interviewing Sheryl Crow, and she was saying something about returning back to her roots of Nashville Music. ( I think the theme of the show may have been about the Nashville scene.) Anyway, the show starting mentioning the qualifications artists needed to be allowed to play in Nashville, and then they started mentioning the Nashville greats, including Johnny Cash. They said that Johnny Cash supported Sheryl Crow in her music career, just as he had supported Joni Mitchell in her music career. And then they showed a shot of Joni during a concert.. a picture I had never seen before, but based on the hairdo, I would guess it must've been during the mid to late 70's. I can't understand this, unless she did an overdub of her voice on that song. I've watched the video many times, and it seems entirely possible that it may be a voice overdub. Has anyone else noticed this too? I not only had not noticed it, Mia, I am afraid I do not agree with your evaluation. I think Joni's voice is great throughout that concert. In particular, I think her version of Edith surpasses the HOSL version, and Black Crow is outstanding, too. Furry..... everything, really. There were different tracks on the video than on the CD. I would not be surprised if the tracks came from more than one concert at the same venue. However, the intro to Raised on Robbery on the video reveals Joni stumbling/stammering over the scene at the bar - at the point where she says,"he was putting a little money on the Maple Leafs". I have not studied the video at that point, but I think that would be a good place to look. If the shape of her mouth seems to fit those stumbled syllables neatly, I would guess that would suggest strongly that there was no overdubbing. Frankly, I doubt that there were any whole songs overdubbed - is it common to overdub concert gaffs ? To me it offers a unique journey through both vast and intimate, interior and external landscapes. Sumptuous. On behalf of Travelogue: "Quit pichin' shit up here. I'm not that bad ya' dig" " This is the sort of ironic response I was afraid I might get when I volunteered to put together this "most favorite / least unfavorite" survey. On the one hand, the zealots who love Tlog refuse to reply because they love the record as it is - but does that mean you have no favorites on the record ? On the other hand, the zealots who hate Tlog refuse to reply because they do not want the word "favorite" to apply to any of the songs - they hate it so much (or, perhaps, because they simply have no interest in the record at all, in which case I can understand the lack of interest in the survey). I think there are people who see it as a mixed bag, who I would think have no excuse to not reply, but so far I have only had a few responses (which have been pretty interesting). More responses would produce some results worthy of discussing on a statistical level, but first I need the replies. Bobsart (who does not believe this survey constitutes 'pitchin shit' - au contrere, really) PS - I know where that quote came from, David :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Nov 2003 21:59:59 EST From: HOOPSJOHN1@aol.com Subject: y'all know how bad i am with subject lines, but this does have JC, read if you d In a message dated 11/16/03 3:01:17 AM EST, les@jmdl.com writes: << I am with Noel on this one because anything from Joni is a gift for me, even if it takes awhile to catch on to it. It might take some listeners some time to understand and appreciate (as much of Jonis work through the years), and, for some may never be acceptable. Such is life. But I do get a flashback to when I first listened to Dylan when he went electric and stoped being exclusively Social protest. I was much older then. I am so much younger now.
