My Dad is a fan, but it took me awhile to really give her a listen (I'm 19, a sophomore at UC Berkeley); now she's my favorite recording artist. I haven't heard all of her albums yet, but here are my picks for those I own/have "borrowed" from Dad: Clouds favorite--Chelsea Morning (I agree that this song has a desperate, longing underpinning; the speaker keeps asking her/his lover to stay, promising all sorts of beautiful things, "if only you will stay") least favorite--Roses Blue Ladies of the Canyon favorite--The Circle Game least favorite--The Priest Blue favorite--A Case of You least favorite--Carey For the Roses favorite--Woman of Heart and Mind least favorite--Banquet Court and Spark favorite--Down to You least favorite--Raised on Robbery Hejira favorite--Hejira least favorite--Black Crow, maybe? (though I adore every song) Night Ride Home favorite--Slouching Towards Bethlehem (a very close second: "Cherokee Louise") least favorite--Ray's Dad's Cadillac I'm sure I'll change my mind on many of these, except maybe "Hejira" and "A Case of You", which are my favorite Joni songs. Why would anyone want to poke sticks at something that's full of crap? Iwww! Even though I see/hear CM as joyful, I appreciate the possibiity of its dark side as well, especially in retrospect. Who is that meshougene? That's Malka (I forget her last name, but it appears several times on the screen) - and she's no meshugana. I think her comments and observations were among the most tuned in (within a very tuned in collection of well edited comments). She was a folksinger turned journalist, and one of her interviews of Joni appears in The Joni Mitchell Companion (edited by Stacy Luftig) - from 1974, a good one. I especially liked her description of Joni standing in the near-empty coffee house, slightly pigeon-toed, with her hair covering her face as if to provide her cover from the external world, as she became one with her songs. Beautifully put by her (far better than my recap here). Also, the concept of Joni's bravery in remaining open to the mystery and the magic of the creative process struck me as on target (and helped give me insight about why that magic is missing from my life). Joni reinforced that concept with her own comments later in the video, about staying open - while adding that to some extent that the gods controlled whether it would come at any given time - the idea seeming to be to stay open at all times. I like Malka - a lot. "Joni Mitchell sat in with us last night during the second show and we improvised a thing that was really good. And we ended it with her singing 'Duke of Earl'. Really far out, she came on stage: 'Now OK and we're going to improvise this thing...' and we did a few chords for her and she started reciting this poem which began: 'Penelope wants to fuck the sea..." And the audience did a double take 'Yuuunk!'... a little hush falls over the Fillmore... JONI MITCHELL?" -Zappa, 1970 Comments from the Zappa Discussion List: Dennis: Yeh, I was at that show when Mitchell improvised a tune about a girl who wanted to fuck the sea. While she tried to be ethereal and haunting, Zappa made the band alternate 2 monster chords a tritone apart at an ominous largo tempo. Mitchell looked a little thrown by this and glanced over at Zappa, as if she wasn't expecting him to lob her a curve ball. Harald: I've read somewhere that she showed up at least once at Zappa's place in the late 60's. Seems a very strange connection to me (was she wearing feathers and bells?) Charles: Joni Mitchell was Motorhead's "strange new girlfriend", circa 1967. (According to Greg Russo's book "Cosmic Debris" the date of the concert is the 14th not the 13th, there were 2 shows featuring Sha Na Na, J.F. Murphy And The Free Flowing Salt & Joni Mitchell.) 1975: Joni, as part of the Rolling Thunder Revue with Dylan and others, performed twice today in New Haven, Connecticut at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum - once in the afternoon and again in the evening. She performed the song "Jungle Line" from her just released new album "The Hissing of Summer Lawns". 2002: Joni performs three songs at the Stormy Weather benefit at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles, including Dylan's "Sweetheart Like You".
