So delete now if you want. What a great weekend we had! Kakki & Victor arrived Saturday at Cold Spring Tavern for an afternoon into the evening of incredible music by many local & some from LA performers....Victor was a perfect choice for listening to as the harmonic concordance was coming into formation (Victor played in the afternoon). Then we all went back to my place with a bass player we met (recommended by a friend as very Jaco-like)...to practice our songs for our Joni Tribute Sunday (there's some of the Joni content). Victor was playing Amelia & I was playing Midway. Vince Chafin (bass) was incredible & Kakki kept saying you sound just like Jaco! Then I happened to notice that the time was 5:12 just a minute before the concordance was lined up (west coast time). So I grabbed the martini glasses & we (Kakki, Victor, Jeff, Vince & I) toasted with Peligrino! Then back to the Tavern for some more fine music to end our evening with. Sunday was our Joni Tribute day. Victor went sightseeing downtown & Kakki rested then they met up & eventually arrived at SOhO where I was making preparations for the Tribute. What a night it was! Incredible songs of course & incredible musicians. The house was packed & the audience (who can often be quite rowdy at this establishment back by the bar) were so attentive. It was a magical night & I am sure Victor (who at this moment is flying home to Georgia) & Kakki (who is hopefully functional at work) will fill you in much more eloquently than I can do at this moment. I am just so happy that they both could make it this year. ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Nov 2003 12:00:28 -0600 From: "J.David Sapp" Subject: re:Neil Tesser on MINGUS <. I was at the Atlanta concert on Joni's birthday in 1998. A group of us were fortunate enough to meet her at the hotel lounge afterward. I was the last one in the group to talk with her. I was sitting next to her on the sofa, when, I think it was Larry, offered her a piece of cake. I don't remember if she offered me a piece or if Larry did, I was still in awe of having her speak to me like an old friend. Anyway, I took just a little bite of the rich, dark chocolate cake. The rest of the piece came home with me to Florida and is still in my freezer. I just went to check on it in it's plastic wrap and tupperware home. It's a little bit stale but surprisingly, still moist. I don't think I'd get much for it on eBay but it's very precious to me. I'm not saying that I don't care for the song because I do, but it was a poor choice for a lead-in. She should have opened the album with Chelsea Morning. Also, I was just listening to "Just Like Me", and again it struck me how strong a song that is, both musically & lyrically. The melody is very catchy & accessible, even though it's in an alternate tuning it doesn't seem to have any really tricky intervals. I can clearly understand why she chose not to include it on her debut, but it would fit right in on Clouds, and if it had not been a big hit for her it certainly would have been for someone and would have spawned a ton of cover versions. She could have just included it, or given Roses Blue the boot & put Just Like Me in its place. I'd really love to argue with you about that, if for no other reason than to get some kind of debate going on here, because things have been awfully dull around here lately. Or is it just me? Never mind that, but dammit, Muller, i agree with you. I think it's usually a good thing to start off a show, or an album, with something rousing, and "Chelsea Morning" certainly fits the bill. "Tin Angel" could have come later, in fact, maybe just after "CM" because it's OK to get quiet and retrospective after the big opening number. Maybe someone else will disagree? I sure hope so. And I'm not particularly fond of "Roses blue" either, so I can't even argue about that. Maybe I can argue with my dog who doesn't seem to want to go for a walk tonight for some reason. So many great moments and I am still on a high after being infused with so much beautiful music Saturday and Sunday. Saturday Victor and I arrived at the Cold Spring Tavern, a tiny little log cabin in the mountains that was a stagecoach stop in the early west. Several of the local SB artists performed along with our Victor, who did an absolutely perfect set of songs from his Parsonage Lane CD and Stevie Wonder's "You and I" (sigh). As Kate mentioned we took a break to go over to her fantastic house nearby and hang out for awhile with bass player Vince, who is Jaco incarnate. Then back to the Tavern in time to see Kenny Edwards (Bryndle, Karla Bonoff) blow us all away. He truly is the perfect, consummate songwriter. The closing set was the knock me down singer songwriter Mark Luna, who has had songs covered by Shawn Colvin and Melissa Errico. He is amazing and I am a ardent new fan. The Sunday tribute was even more incredible. I think around 30 Joni songs were performed covering almost every album. Victor's "Amelia" with "Jaco" Vince accompanying him, was perfect and Victor received numerous compliments and oohs and ahs from the audiences both nights. Bob, the Covers King would have enjoyed the night very much. Some high points for me were Laura Schielske doing a brilliant jazz version of "Rainy Night House" (try to imagine that), Kathrin Schorr doing a whole new interpretation of "How Do You Stop," Peter Lewis (Moby Grape) doing an understatedly beautiful performance of "I Think I Understand" and Jeff Pevar's (CPR)joking intro to "For Free" where he mentioned Crosby recording and performing it with the Byrds and CPR and always qualifying that if he didn't sing it right it was "all the fault of his new liver." (A few performers after Pevar, subsenquently, intro'ed their songs with the disclaimer that if they messed up it was also the fault of their "new livers" lol). Vince also accompanied Kate on "Song about the Midway" with a clever little riff from Blue snuck in. All of the performers were pretty fantastic - some could replicate Joni exactly (no small feat) while others provided unique and brilliant interpretations. I was also very excited to see Randy Tico (Flora Purim and Airto, Dori Caymmi) perform and accompany a number of the artists. The best part of all, to me, was the great spirit of enthusiasm shown by all the artists. They all clearly love Joni and supporting each other in the Santa Barbara music community. Kate was honored for her ongoing work with the "Keep the Beat" program through producing these tribute shows to raise money to maintain music programs in the local schools. I think the Joni Tribute is really establishing itself as an annual tradition in S.B. I'm sure everyone is looking forward to next year already! Thanks so much to Kate and Jeff for being part of such a wonderful time for Victor and I this weekend! I'd say nothing could or should "improve" it ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Nov 2003 23:13:15 -0800 From: "Victor Johnson" Subject: RE: [NortheastJonifest] Re: Santa Barbara Joni Tribute I'm safely back at home after spending all day in a plane. Kakki did an excellent job describing the tribute which was truly a thrilling experience for everyone there and an event I do not want to miss next year. California has cast a spell on me and I don't think it will be long before I find myself there again. As the evening progressed I kept thinking that I should be seeing people from the jmdl. Kakki was an excellent host and I am indebted to her. It was so exciting to finally experience Southern California and to drive through Laurel Canyon, Bel Aire, and see Joni's stomping grounds. And heading up to Kate's we drove up the coast line through Malibu, stopped in Ventura for lunch, popped into a thrift store where I found some really nice shirts for next to nothing. Thank you Kakki so very much for making my visit so enjoyable. I will have to learn how to make martinis now so I can drink one in your honor. Still dreaming about those jalapeno onions.... Thanks also to Kate and Jeff for putting together such an awesome event and for being my hosts in Santa Barbara. Let me know when you get airconditioning and plumbing in the cave...might have to do a little excavating...just make sure there's enough room for a futon and stereo and a complete kitchen would be nice... love, Victor ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Nov 2003 23:23:08 -0800 From: "Victor Johnson" Subject: Re: Improving on Clouds . I sure hope so. I disagree(hehehe)....I like Tin Angel starting off Clouds because it forces you to really listen and lets you know that this is a songwriter who writes some really deep, poetic songs...you know this is something really special...and also because most people making an album would probably start out with something like Chelsea Morning but Joni is different than most people and that is something I like about her. Victor Plane ride to California $173.00 gas $15.00 food$54.00 driving through Laurel Canyon listening to "Clouds".......priceless. ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2003 #350 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
