The writing and editing are meticulous, reflecting the attention to detail that Joni's work possessed and deserved in return. There are so many moments that I appreciate about Ms. Lacy's 'work of art' - I just think it's wonderful. I really ought to take notes and list a bunch of them that push my buttons. Here are two: 1. In the early scene of Maidstone in winter, with Urge for Going playing, immeditately after the line "now the warriors of winter, they gave a bold, trimuphant shout", the horses neigh gently but audibly. Whether one views that touch as nice, corny, cute or banal, it was obviously borne of love. 2. In the scene covering Joni's first appearance at Carnegie Hall, a male voice from the audience shouts out the best "I love you" and Joni laughs. However, that particular "I love you" and follow-up laugh came, in fact, from her second Carnegie Hall concert (right at the beginning of the 5th song - Blue). That Susan Lacy went out of her way to look for the best "I love you" from those two concerts in order to capture the spirit of that first Carnegie night (Nash follows with the words "The audience were ecstatic that night") again shows the kind of love that fired the passion with which this project was completed. Susan Lacy may not have received a Grammy for her writing and direction of WOHAM, but she surely would have gotten my vote. Bobsart PS - I was at that second Carnegie Hall concert, but felt too much fear to shout "I LOVE YOU" right out loud. That was someone else. My internal reaction then as now - "get in line, pal". ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2003 09:22:15 EST From: CDTraderJohn@aol.com Subject: great articles about lyrics, songs and songwriters I don't usually do a post like this, but I was trying to find the name of a song lyric that was running through my head (it turned out to be "The Ballad of Dan Moody" by Michael Smith -- I knew it from Steve Goodman) and a Google search led me to this site, amongst others. Here I found incredibly insightful essays about lyrics, songs and songwriters like Loudon Wainwright, Randy Newman, Norah Jones, Bob Dylan, Danny O'Keefe, Lyle Lovett, Elvis Costello, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and many others -- even a reference to one of my all-time favorite, though obscure, songs -- "The Mary Ellen Carter" by Stan Rogers. If you love music, take a few moments to explore some of his (Stephen Wacker's) writings on music. You will be richly rewarded with new insights to some great songs. You might even be tempted to run out and buy some you've never heard before and, as Martha would say, "That's a GOOD thing!" The three hosts are big Joni fans, and clearly appreciated the oppportunity to indulge. Although none of them had actually met Joni, they had solicited tributes and stories from people that had met her. Some of the stories include: Joni and a friend communing with peacocks in the Saskatoon zoo. Joni taking time to talk to a child in a wheelchair at the Mendel opening. A gallery owner in BC who received an impromptu piano lesson from Joni on a hide-covered piano in his gallery. A tribute from a man who remembers hearing Joni composing the song Carey in her room at the B&B where he worked in Athens, Greece. He also remembered seeing her with her American friend, Carey, who indeed carried a cane and wore long black boots. But the best story, was from a woman who heard one of Joni's concerts at the Hibou in Ottawa way back. Joni had finished a long engagement there (1967?) and had stayed on with friends in the Gatineau Hills (in Quebec), just across the river from Ottawa. The small town nearby is called Chelsea. During a return engagement to the Hibou, the caller claimed that Joni introduced her new song, Chelsea Morning, there, in reference to Chelsea, Quebec! So is this, in fact, the origin of this celebrated song? The set list included You Turn Me On I'm a Radio, from MOA, Facelift (fitting for a 60th birthday celebration, said the caller!) Little Green and For Free. The hosts said they had been inundated with heartfelt Joni tributes, and one of the hosts said she had been moved to tears, reading all these messages of thanks and love on her computer screen. My parents owned a cottage north of there and in the 60s we drove through Chelsea (about 20 miles north of Ottawa) every weekend. If "The traffic wrote the words" there would be hardly enough for one verse, I'm sure the population wasn't more than 100 with one gas station/store. "The streets are paved with passersby" would have referred to the flattened skunks and raccoons on the highway. In the last 15 years or so, Chelsea and the area has become a haven for artists and musicians. Spent last evening celebrating Joni's b-day by seeing Love Actually. The scene with Emma Thompson broke my heart. Her acting, with mature BSN playing in the background, is worth the ticket price alone. O.k., now for the help I need. Am trying to talk my daughter into writing a paper on the Magdelene Laundries. She needs to write a piece on song lyrics that have meaning. Requirements are the actual lyrics, a published article, and an internet story. My question is, can we use something from the Irish Times as her published piece, even if we snag a copy of it from the internet? I know my lovely librarians will have an answer for this. I am hoping it is yes, since otherwise she is in for some reasearch Hell and is away from campus and library this weekend. Her response was that some reviewers in their positive reviews still didn't "get" or quite appreciate what she was doing in some of the music. I was expecting two full hours of stories about meeting Joni; I cleared my schedule so I could bask; and all we got was a half-hour, which flew by in about three minutes. I don't know why I thought they could devote the entire show; got my wires crossed somehow. If you heard my request, Face Lift, you probably heard my letter about Joni giving her full attention to my son Emil at the art gallery in Saskatoon. Before that they played Chelsea Morning (the writer who requested it said she was there when Joni stood in for a performer who couldn't make it, and first played the song, brand new, after writing it about Chelsea, Que.) and You Turn Me On I'm a Radio. There was a Greek guy who wrote about hearing her writing/practising Carey in her room (#4) in a cafi/hostel in Greece; he said he was struck by her beauty at that time, and that he remembered the boyfriend Carey being with her there. The broadcasters said they had received a lot of tributes to Joni and that they were very touching; one said she had been in tears at her computer as she read. All three of the broadcasters are also fans. "Why didn't you people send these to her?" they asked. I like that idea and I'm sure others might as well. I think it would only work for people with high-speed internet access though and many people don't have that. I've been reluctant to agree to the vine thing because there's just too much pressure with copying it and getting the original out to someone else within a short period of time - and lately I've been living in fear of my computer crashing and my not being able to afford to get it fixed. I will say that it proved to be a great source of Joni stuff, but also opened up the channels fro trading some other artists. I walked away from that with a significant gain to my live music collection. I fork out about $50/ mo. for my high speed, and I'm the first to admit I milk it for ALL it's worth. Ms Lacey, as they say on the west side of Cincinnati, "You done good, kid." "JM: WOHaM" has the richness of an art film. My favorite is the editing when Joni's talking about marrying Graham but then she remembers her destiny is to be the artist that her grandmother Wanted to be. The way Ms. Lacey cut that film, those images, is as good as it gets. I'm in. Lama BobS said, in part, >There are so many moments that I appreciate about Ms. Lacy's 'work of art' - I just think it's wonderful. I really ought to take notes and list a bunch of them that push my buttons.> ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Nov 2003 02:05:27 -0500 From: ljirvin@jmdl.com Subject: Today's Library Links: November 9 On November 9 the following articles were published: 1995: "Cat Fight: Chrissie Hynde Hits Carly Simon At Joni Mitchell Show" - Addicted To Noise website (Review - Concert, with photographs) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=40 1999: "Joni Mitchell To Sing On Next Album From Jazz Drummer Brian Blade" - AllStar Website (News Item) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=439 ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2003 #348 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
