As one of the relatively few fans who likes Dancin' Clown, I would in this case advise you that the initial request to play this song was a gag, dedicated to one of Joni's best fans (and the world's ranking authority on covers of Joni's songs - perhaps you do on-line interviews ?) Anyway, Mr. Muller (pronounced Mule -er) has expressed vociferously his relative distaste for this song over the years - hence the gag. In that context, I would suggest that you replace Dancin Clown with a two song sequence from the For the Roses CD - Lesson in Survival / Let the Wind Carry Me (they segue into one another, so there is no interruption in the music). This pairing is a Hidden Treasure, IMO. My favorite BSN's are, in no particular order: Brother Love Canal (dance/electronica version) Natalie Cole (one of the prettiest vocals) European Jazz Trio Jason Falkner (great power-pop version) Terry Gonda (was on my Sweet 16 Take 2...wonderful!) Davy Graham (great Eastern guitar sound) Hole (Courtney Love's nasty buzzsaw version...utterly disrespectful) John Hart Trio (very tasty jazz) Lydia van Dam Group (all of hers are pure golden) Diane Reeves (another gorgeous soulful rendition) Syncopation (very creative, unique and lovey acapella arrangement) And that's not to say that all the others are not good, just that these in particular really stand out for me. The quality is VERY good. It starts out in black & white, some of the performers talking about folk music, or the guitar, or both. It's subtitled in Japanese. Joni has a fairly long monologue section, talking about starting out with the ukelele. Then there's the Dylan "Subterranean Homesick Blues" video (from Don't Look Back) where he flips the cards, then Joni has her live performance of "Little Green" (in color) which as I said is a nice performance and a couple of times looks as though she's going to cry. The live performance is interspersed with the cover of Blue, the lyrics to the song, some other photos. Then there's Dave van Ronk doing BSN - man is he awful, he sounds & looks like some wino derelict singing, but I suppose I shouldn't be so disrespectful as he's passed on. Then there's Joni again with Marcie, only the audio is dubbed. Instead of the actual performance audio the filmmakers dubbed in the studio recording. This also is blended with pics of & from STAS. Then it cuts to Tim Buckley then it cuts off. I would suggest that this go to Ashara so these tidbits can be compiled in the next video compilation. Maybe you can tree it and then we don't have to pay $100 to a trader somewhere afterall! ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Nov 2003 22:20:09 -0800 From: "kakki" Subject: Re: Other COVERS news! But she knows more than a bit about them, Bob, trust me, she does know ;-) I'm looking forward to hearing more about the covers box set you are planning to send to her and Hell's handcrafted boxes. Hope to see a photo of them, too!
