From Tasmania so many threads and so little time....... another name!...Grace Slick...who I paid money to see and did not appear...!! Its 1978?.....We get tickets to see Genesis at Knebworth in England and my friend says yeah Jefferson Starship (or were they Airplane still??) are support with Grace Slick..and who has this habit of showing her wobbly bits...mmmm...I only 20!! So its a huge open air concert....Knebworth......then we hear over the concert loudspeakers.....that Grace will not appear....(we later learn shehas been arrested in Amsterdam..drugs or being drunk?..so were the Dutch getting a free flash??) A huge portion of the crowd started booing..I had come to see Genesis...so I was not bothered. and it was annouced that Paul Kantor (sp) has to do the singing..coz Grace was not coming.....look I am easy going as anyone one...but jeez it was awful and embarrassing to hear...did he have a cold? I think I got drunk thru boredom at this stage ...Genesis were great and even Devo...who hurled insults at us...so did I miss anything with Grace?...only teasing! hated...we built this city on rock n roll !!!!!.....see I tease? and last night on TV at 8.30pm we have this 1/2 hour show called the 'Movie show' well they were waffling on about a film called 'Laurel Canyon'...a recent release (inspired? or using an older female songwriter? as a background piece?)...well this older woman (the actress) is called Jane and is going to seduce her son's girlfriend?.....also she surrounds herself with has been muso's and is having a writers block with her new album.....well the 'Movie show' hosts...says "is it about Joni Mitchell ? " The actress who plays Jane/Joni is more akin to Keith Richard (is it with an S these days?) mother!!! Can any one enlighten me on this film?? I was brought up with a mother who loved Hollywood (1930's to 1970's) and had all these autographed photos (yes I know some were signed by the secretaries!), magazines, film scores and worshiped...Bette Davies and Leslie Howard, were her heroes (that's whom I am named after, not Bette but Leslie Howard in Gone with the Wind.....what a wimp!...I wish it could have been Rhet...damm!!)...so please do not even hint that old Betty was a dyke...my mum had trouble with the word ....thespian! or ...fasten your seat belts....its going to be bumpy ride from the spirit world...I am sure she would have shrugged off Rock Hudson being gay?...but not Doris Day!!! My mother had all these Judy Garland 78's...which I would listen to..plus Deanna Durbin (?)..so really its sad to see Lisa M like this...imagine having that group to a dinner party..Liz Taylor, Michael Jackson...and talking of Liz..she liked/loved gay men? and last Travelogue..it has really got to me...... I was shocked to hear this on 1st play.....but for months now..I have played and played this and it never bores me!!..its a master piece..to me. I jotted down what I felt I could hear.....Westside story, American in Paris, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Oklahoma, High Society, Jesus Christ Superstar, Sound of Music, John Williams (Star Wars, ET, Close Encounters etc) Elgar, Elmer Bernstein (all those big Western themes) Muir Matheson..and the chap who did the Clint Eastwood film..The Good, the Bad the Ugly......music from Hitchcock films...Grand Opera, High Jazz Funk, Celtic, Brass bands (oooh Northern English upbringing) Sunday hymn music .......and PASSION and very warm blooded...ooooh I love all those solo trumpet moments on this....to me its like....great movie and musical themes from the 40's to 60's..which I brought up on..it just gets better on every listen!!. I feel like she did that to shut up the suits who were pressuring her to do a "greatest hits" package...it has proven to be effective as a gateway drug to Joni for many, so the proof is in the pudding. Hopefully the people who pick it up realize that this CD is akin to reading a collection of chapters from different books, and they're drawn to pick up the whole volume. Unfortunately, she's really missed the opportunity to capitalize. Her friends CSN got it VERY right a couple years back with their 4-CD box set, mixing the familiar with the unreleased/alternative tracks, and this box-set still sells phenomenally well. It hasn't lost any value at all. Even the folks who have their whole catalogue had to get this one for all the goodies on it. But in Joni's case, she's already re-released her "hits", so that's out. She just put out some unreleased material, but it was buried in a 4-cd set (that should have been 3) surrounded by cd's that nobody wants. Tiny berries surrounded by huge thorns. As has been witnessed here, this Geffen set has not been a big seller EVEN AMONG us hardcores! This set is already being dumped for discounts on the internet markets, and like T'log will soon be available for cheap, so those of you who are waiting will have your patience rewarded. And as I said before, the bigger fear for me is that because of this series of flops, there will be little encouragement to put any rarities project on the streets until it's posthumous which I hope is a long long time away. Re: Kate seeing Ani... Wow what an experience. Funny cos I got my first Ani CD the day (after maybe) you saw her. It's a live one too; 'Living In A Clip'! It doesn't have the 2 live versions I had on mp3 but the CD is fab. She really can play the guitar like no one else. Such a great live artist. I know what you mean about a Janis Ian style. I believe she plays in different tunings like Joni but all in all I think she does have more in common with Janis. OMG 'Out Of Range' really is something. I'm sure to get another Ani CD soon. Wish she would tour the UK but like anyone I like they seem to just go state to state. Re: What you reading... 'Soul Picnic' - Michele Kort I've been meaning to get this for ages so what do you know I finally did! Good so far but I haven't had much time yet. Also just got 'Angel In The Dark' Hybrid SACD (don't have a player though so I can't listen to the bonus tracks)! It was a giant leap from NYT but I figure I'll fill in the gaps as I go along. It's very chilled out - kinda' late night which can be nice so, so far I like! Re: Joni 3 album box set... I have the first 3 Geffen albums like this which is how I will keep it for the moment as I really can't justify spending 40 GP Pounds on 3 bonus tracks! Of course the new box set has been remastered but how much better is the quality - anyone know? Anyway back to the 3 album box sets - also a few of Joni's Asylum/Elektra albums were done like this, but I believe they are no longer manufactured because they have been made redundant by the HDCD single versions. And that's me! It sounds like an extraordinary improvement - the difference in sound jumped right out at me the moment I put on the box set WTRF. I can't explain it from a technical soundpoint, but it almost sounded like a whole new (or at least remade) album to me. I also heard parts that I had never heard before after years of listening to it. And, for lack of a better description - it sounded *prettier* and had a new and different feel. I had a similar experience the first time I acquired and listened to the remastered Gold version of "Blue." Even though "Blue" is one of my tops and I've listened to it forever, hearing the Gold version was like listening to it for the first time and it sounded like Joni herself was sitting in my living room playing the songs. As for the booklet - there are some explanations and background that he haven't heard before from Joni on some of the songs and it's a neat package. Since the price is dropping rapidly, you might be able to pick it up on eBay or at a good discount. Maybe wilder, more outrageous, more explicit (but at the at the same time often more obtuse) but seedy? I don't think of Grace as seedy. At least not any more so than the crowd of musicians she hung out with. Mark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2003 23:56:03 -0500 From: "Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: THE COMPLETE GEFFEN RECORDINGS The sound quality on all 4 albums is much, much better. My standard-issue DOG EAT DOG on CD pales in comparison. It's not just more detail. There's more Joni. There are Joni-with-reverb, Joni-choruses on the far left without reverb, Joni-choruses all the way across the image with reverb, and a single-Joni-smack-in-the-middle, dry, in the vocal booth. DED is not annoying and shrill; DED is fun, richly varied, and detailed. I like the 20-bit mastered "Chinese Cafe" more than on my LP too and I don't often say that about piano songs. But after reading about "Speechless" for all these 20 years, and having only a 25 second preview (BBC's Top 12 programme), it's now arrived intact and (almost) unadorned. Like the TRAVELOGUE version of "Judgment of the Moon And Stars", I had to have it just for the one track. I don't have to have the entire Beatles' collection. Nor the entire Cowboy Junkies collection. I don't need the full-blown reissue of "THE LAST WALTZ" but other than that, I have all of Joni and James. All the best, Lama np: the future-proof "BLOOD ON THE TRACKS" (remastered 20-bit CD/SACD hybrid), today's addition, from the greatest living male songwriter of our generation. He's only second best without the gender qualifier though. :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 2003 00:57:12 EST From: BRYAN8847@aol.com Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2003 #538 - 3 CD set Now a question?... on the list he can get is ......'3 for 1' a Joni CD for $30..is this a best of Joni?
