An Elder Speaks Up On Land and Property Let me tell you how we lost the land. It wasn't our land like we owned it. It was the land where we hunted or where our ancestors were buried. It was the land that the Creator had given us. It was the land where our sacred stories took place. It had sacred places on it. Our ceremonies were here. We knew the animals. They knew us. We had watched the seasons pass on this land. It was alive, like our grandparents. We were part of it. The land was part of us. We didn't even know about owning the land. It is like talking about owning your grandmother. For us, the earth was alive. To move a stone was to change her. To kill an animal was to take from her. There had to be respect. We saw no respect from these people. They chopped down trees and left animals lay where they were shot. They made loud noises. They seemed like wild people. They were heavy on the land and they were loud. Then these new people started asking us for the land. They wanted to give us money for the land. Our people didn't want this. Then these people said that we didn't belong here anymore. That there was a chief in Washington, which was a city far away, and the land was his, and he said they could live here and we could not. We thought they were insane. These people would ride across the land and put a flag up, then say that everything between where they started and where they put the flag belonged to them. That was like someone shooting an arrow into the sky and saying that all the sky up to where the arrow went belonged to him. We thought these people were crazy. They were talking about property. We were talking about the land. Your people came from Europe because they wanted property for their own. They had worked for other people who had claimed all the property and took all the things they raised. They never had anything because they had no property. That was what they wanted more than anything. Everyone believed that whoever had a piece of paper saying they owned the land could control everything that happened on it. The people came here to get their own property. We didn't know this. We didn't even know what it meant. We just belonged to the land. They wanted to own it. Your religion didn't come from the land. It could be carried around with you. Your religion was in a cup and a piece of bread, and that could be carried in a box. Your priests could make it sacred anywhere. You couldn't understand that what was sacred for us was where we were, because that is where the sacred things had happened and where the spirits talked to us. Your people didn't know about the land being sacred. You were killing all the animals. The buffalo was gone. The birds were gone. You would not let us hunt. You gave us blankets and whiskey that made our people crazy. We were put in little pens of land that were like tiny islands in your sea. The worst thing is that you never even listened to us. You came into our land and took it away, and didn't even listen to us when we tried to explain. You made promises and you broke every one. You killed us without even taking our lives. You killed us by turning our land into pieces of paper and bags of flour and blankets, and telling us that was enough. You took the places where the spirits talked to us and you gave us bags of flour. To us the land was alive. It talked to us. We called her our mother. If she was angry with us, she would give us no food. If we didn't share with others, she might send harsh winters or plagues of insects. We had to do good things for her and live the way she thought was right. She was the mother to everything that lived upon her, so everything was our brother and sister. The bears, the trees, the plants, the buffalo. They were all our brothers and sisters. If we didn't treat them right, our mother would be angry. If we treated them with respect and honor, she would be proud. For your people, the land was not alive. It was something that was like a stage, where you could build things and make things happen. You understood the dirt and the trees and the water as important things, but not as brothers and sisters. They existed to help you humans live. You took the land and you turned it into property. Now our mother is silent. But we still listen for her voice. http://www.elexion.com/lakota/wisdom/texto41b.htm#< ps. As I see it, Joni's "Lakota" acknowledges and honors all of this. _________________________________________________________________ Concerned that messages may bounce because your Hotmail account has exceeded its 2MB storage limit? Since I couldn't make it to the Fest its a real treat to listen to the superb performances and to feel the infectious spirit and fun. Get these discs - its REAL - a quality hard to find in today's corporate music scene. I hesitate to single out 1 performance but Bob Muller's Ethiopia is amazing. I guess a cover king would know how to cover a song - he stays true to Joni's intent but makes it his own by kicking up the emotional delivery without being overwrought. I like Joni's Ethiopia but it curiously never moved me. I think her vocal excels at painting the picture at the expense of giving emotional movement to the lyric. Well Bob's delivery kicked me in the gut. Outstanding. It belongs on Sweet Sixteen Take Three. <...I can always re-record it in 15 years with full orchestra. ;~)> Bob - when you do, have Klein re-contextualize it, Mendoza can arrange, tell Shorter "you are the flies on the eyes", Herbie can play one jagged chord after the phrase "poison spray", have a choir join you on the chorus "Ethiopia, Ethiopia", and tell Billy Preston to sit and watch :) peace, david ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Oct 2003 18:07:09 +0200 From: Emiliano Subject: Fw: Joni @ PBS show Perma-Vine Offer... from Europe now! I think that same recording (or at least another "Eastern Rain") is on the WMMR tapes as well. I'll hit the vaults and see if there's any additional info available. I agree with you, it's a beautiful song, and that Eastern tuning and chord structure gives it a unique sound to be sure. Fairport Convention agrees with us as they picked it as one of the many Joni songs they covered early on. But I have kept up with the list dispatches (and all the political harangues -- sheesh, chill out everybody, all of that kinda shit will still be going on a hundred years after you're dead, just like it was going on a hundred years before you were born...not to sound like a scold or anything, but think about it.) Here's some randomology for y'all: 1. Was cruising Apple's iTunes Music store today, and noticed they've got Mitchell's Miles of Isles listed as a "Just Added" item. The notes to the album mention 4 minutes of lost audience applause and Joni talkin' -- that's a bummer, I was hoping what had been compressed into within' an inch of it's edge, on the first CD release would have been restored on the remasterd disc...guess not. 2. Have been inching my way into the "dreaded period" lately, that's what I call the post Don Juan's releases -- and I've been doing that via the Hits and Misses discs, in my car stereo. Can't believe I'm writing this now, LOL, but I'm really starting to enjoy the song Dog Eat Dog -- once I get over the heavy 80s sonic aura it's quite wonderful. And too, Sex Kills came on and really waylaid me, I'd dismissed that one, too, until I saw her perform it on the latest DVD release. So some ripening IS happening. 3. On the female artist's front, which I started hammering about a couple of weeks ago. Thought I'd mention some stuff I've checked out and liked lately. The first is a real surprise, the new Edie Brickell disc Volcano. Wow, hats off to the lady. She went back to guitar school, got her chops up, sat down and has done some powerful narrative songwriting, with great melodies and very rootsy, simple production. I don't think you'll be disappointed. 4. Speaking of dissed -- the new Ricki Lee Jones is a big letdown...especially after all the raving I read in the press and online (and here). Kicks off with a nice midtempo jazz groove but then gets caught in a puddle and never moves anywhere. And her voice is starting to bug the shit out of me -- I think I used to consider it charming, but now the nasal, little girl quality isn't working. It's the equivalent of women who wear hot pants past their prime (usually in Las Vegas, etc.) 5. Forgot to mention another favorite (female) songwriter/singer; someone I think folks here would appreciate. Sam Phillips; she's married to T Bone Burnett (and he's done some awesome production on several of her LPs). Her last album from two years ago, Fan Dance, was fabulous. The kind of sound and writing I wished Joni would move towards. Check it out. http://tinyurl.com/r8f5 6. Can someone here describe Mitchell's version of It's All Over Now, on the new boxed set. I haven't heard it, and I'm wondering about stuff like: year it was recorded, production style and quality, vocal performance, studio or live...just dig in and let it rip, will ya? And then if someone can send me a MP3 copy to "sample." LOL! 7. Lastly, Hissing has been playing pretty much daily here in the household. Which got my bf playing Court and Spark (yes, the one I repurchased, mainly for the friggin' art work), he thinks the line "I've seen some hard hard places come down to smoke and ash," is one of the greatest lines ever written in a pop song. And I'd have to agree. What's great is that he's not that familiar with Hissing, so he's getting a big education from me on what the album meant to me while I was abandoning highschool and moving to LA (Hollywood as I called it then) because, well, that's just where you moved to if you lived in So Cal and were going to do something with yourself as an artist, or writer, or musician, or starlet (what's the equivalent of a starlet for a young male? Hustler?) Anyway, I'm writing an essay on the album, how it intertwined my life at that time -- to be published I'm not sure where, but it's the writing that's the thing. I'll keep everyone posted.
