The Amazon site says it is due for release on Sept 23, 2003. Probably just in the US. The cover photo http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000C7PSH.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg is a cropped version of a shot Larry took long ago. The *better*, (probably uncropped 35mm) version appears now in an ebay ad for the 3" promo CD for "My Secret Place" manufactured in Germany: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2558413250 The cropped, square version doesn't balance. The original rectangle gave some negative space to balance better. Stay tuned for more details as they develop. Within this musical adventure you will hear all of Jaco's historical 'firsts' including his first experimental home recordings, his first studio session, his earliest bands, his very beginnings as a soloist, and most importantly his never-before-heard first original compositions. This revealing audio biography is told through the music, by Jaco's own spoken words, and with close friend's and fellow musician's first-hand recollections of events. Highlighting all of the significant developments and various influences along the way, this rare collection of materials is the complete story of Jaco's early formative years. You'll also hear Jaco's "Original Demos" recorded at Criteria recording studios in 1974, and classic recordings and exclusive interviews with Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell, Joe Zawinul, and Herbie Hancock.' ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 08:17:14 -0400 From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: "Complete Geffen Recordings", Due Tuesday! I had already seen the "main feature" but it was great to see it again, especially in digital picture and sound. Susan Lacy and all the others did such a good job with this film (glaring omissions notwithstanding), it seems like everytime I see it I pick up something new. And I enjoyed the bonus features as well...there's a nice photo collection that starts with Joni as a kid in that psuedo-Indian garb, a great pic that really captures her spirit I think, there's a couple three songs from PWWAM, my favorite bonus feature is what they call "Sound Bites" which are great interview pieces with Joni that didn't make the cut for the film but are fascinating. Some I'd heard variations of but some new info to me as well, mostly her discussion about her polio which I found very moving. There's a Discography that just shows all her album covers, that's no big whoop, and a T'log promo as well. All in all, this is really an excellent package. And once again, hearing those snippets of Joni w/Chuck and the early folk song makes me hungry for a REAL Joni boxset. My fear is that the Geffen box will fall flat (her least popular period revisited?) and she and/or her management will not want to move forward with a rarities/unreleased set. That would be tragic. I don't recall if this has been posted before, but I recently read about a release of a "Summertime" album ("One Song Compilation"), by Roof Music (german label), including naturally our Joni's great version, among 17 versions of this "Porgy & Bess" song . The article I've read, in El Pai's, says: "and a recent rendition that joined in the studio Joni Mitchell with Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock [tears] and Wayne Shorter. Almost nothing." Did she actually record any songs there that were eventually released? I think they called it "The Kiva," and I know Shawn's "Fat City" was recorded in there. The program was broadcast six days later. Joni sang Chelsea Morning, The Gallery, Night in the City, and Cactus Tree. Joni was booked for several other Radio 1 sessions during tours in 1968 and 1969, but all were cancelled for various reasons. 1985: The Alberta Reporter ran an editorial cartoon with a likeness of Joni. Wally described the situation: "On what is called The Sunshine Coast near Vancouver, where Joni has had a house and property since the early 70's, a salmon fishing company had begun to build a huge $2 million plant. The other property owners, Joni's neighbors, asked her to join a protest against this enterprise that they believed could destroy the natural state of affairs in the area. Joni spoke to the press from her home in L.A. and said: "I thought I'd purchased a piece of wilderness, but it's being corrupted by industry." The Alberta Report newspaper took the side of the hatchery reporting that it would bring hundreds of jobs to the population who was heavily unemployed, and they claimed that Joni was not really a current resident and was rarely even in B.C. The salmon company complained that this was a case of a Hollywood celebrity trying to smear an honest fish business."
