I've been reading your very well written introduction to this labour of love and would like to post my suggestions about it. First paragraph... it's a little too "dry", too short as it's been left, you're right, it's not necesarry to put ourselves as kiddy'n hysterical joninuts, but maybe a touch of "crazy love" wouldn't be too much; after all, we must remeber we're aiming this as a birthday gift, please, let's make our Queen's ear be really delighted with a laudatory nuance! I thinks it's not desirable a so precise reference to Help Me: I mean: maybe you should let out saying it's from Joni Mitchell , and from "Court & Spark": *everybody* (worthy) knows it by heart. I'd also ad an adverb (or and adverbial phrase) to "Many list members contributed", maybe "happily contributed", or "contributed in joy"... something to reflect the spirit of this list as it's shown the days those alt. lyrics were arriving (as it's, thanks heaven, usual in here) Well, please, take it as just my humble opinion: I know I couldn't make so well as you, dear Hell, whom I esteem as highly valued for writing as anyone who read your witty posts can see (and sure you've got many many treasures still unknown for listers, too :-). She is correct in saying that these girls won't stand the test of time with their current acts but she should remember that everyone gets a second chance. If they are truly talented, they can reinvent themselves, much as Fleetwood Mac, the band, has done on more than one occasion. I'm reaching, and denying like hell, that middle age plateau. I look at young girls who are proud of their bodies and wear revealing clothes and think to myself, "they should be ashamed", but as quickly as that thought crosses my mind, I remember the day, and how fun it was to wear the clothes that caught the boys' eyes. It is sour grapes over the sweet bird being briefer than a falling star. Don't you think, too, that in part the interviewer likes to set up older women to comment on today's artists? Do interviewers ever say to Mick Jagger, "So what do you think about Justin Timberlake?" Come on, everyone loves a good catfight! Sometimes I think Joni is too open and honest for her own good. I remember when we met her in Detroit she had such stories to tell. She loves to speak, and in the hands of a malicious interviewer she could do some serious damage to herself. In fact, if we checked the archives, she probably has. My favroite Joni interview was the one Cameron Crowe did for RS. You could tell he admired her, yet he asked some tough questions. I stumbled across it the other day while firing up my Almost Famous dvd. The interview is on the disk. These people were evicted and had not taken good care of the dog. One of them was abusive to the poor thing. So Rudy came to live with us. That was in 1989. In the past year or so, Rudy has had problems with arthritis and atrophy in his hind legs. Two weeks ago we took him to our vet because he seemed to be losing ground pretty rapidly. X-rays revealed a large tumor in his lungs that was pressing on his windpipe. We gave him Prednisone and that helped for awhile. Thursday, we made the decision to have him put to sleep and this morning Travis and I were both with him when he left this world. I just came back awhile ago from picking up lunch at the local Taco Time. They were playing the Eurythmics' 'Here Comes the Rain Again' in Taco Time. This is a song that is forever associated in my mind with the time when Edward and I were courting and what it was like falling in love with him. When I got in the car, NPR's American Routes was playing Billie Holiday. Most of you know how much I love Billie. She was immediately followed by......Joni. Singing 'The Man I Love' from Herbie Hancock's 'Gershwin's World'. Coincidence? I think not. Hey, Bob, so good to hear you've landed on your feet. As for me, the illness that hit in the middle of the 'Fest has been plaguing me for some months (fever with memory confusion and memory loss, accompanied sometimes by GI trouble, followed by some form of walking penumonia -- great fun, eh? and the best part is that the scores of long-term surviving AIDsers like myself in SF CAN'T FIND ONE SINGLE DOCTOR WHO'S INTERESTED IN THE FACT THAT THERE ARE PATTERNS IN THIS SYNDROME. One gets something more along the lines of "Aren't you glad you're not dead?" (My response: "Yeah, are you?"), or the ever-popular "Woweeeee, you've got a complicated case -- you'd better save these questions for the next time you can get an appointment with your own doctor -- let's see, he's got something at three a.m. on Christmas eve, that good for you?; in the meantime, good luck with that coughing-up-a-lung-and-throwing-up-an-intestine thingy... Next?!" Ah, HMOs. What I've found is that the only way to communicate with my provider is to send a message to him -- via someone personning a phone somewhere far away, who has never been in San Francisco, and who may or may not have a GED, much less any medical trainning. My teaching experience comes in handy here -- I *never* tire of spelling words like "acyclovir", "Nortriptyline", "cough", "head", "the"... Usually it's easier just to order drugs I have no business ordering without a visit (like various antibiotics, antivirals, etc) -- the request eventually makes it to my doctor, who knows that *I* know what it's for and how to take it. All through punching numbers on a phone, no human-human interaction. Hasn't medical science triumphed wonderfully? Anyway, it's been a loooong time since I've felt up to sitting at a computer, and today's the day. In case it wasn't obvious, i was sick for most of the time I was at the Full Moon, and don't recall long stretches (that's the scariest part of the phantom fevers). Don't know how long I'll last sitting up today, typing, , but I did want to thank you for driving me all the way into Beantown when i was feeling weak and woozy, and let you know I'm finally back on my feet, at least for the moment. I'll be sending a post to the 'list soon, maybe later today; in fact, I'll probably just send this as a teaser -- hope you don't mind. BTW -- I'll send a message to this effect to the whole list, but I'm going to change my screen name for when I'm on the list to littlebreen@aol.com -- probably effective with my next posting. Don't worry, if you don't catch it this time, I'll repeat it with the next posting. LAHM Hi David, I certainly wasn't trying to knock Virginia Woolf. I am a great admirer of hers. I think she was a great writer, a literary genius in fact. My remark about Joni was mostly tongue in cheek and was made in reference to Joni's comments about poets. A lot of Woolf's prose approaches poetry, imo. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression. The passage from Mrs. Dalloway and the verse about clouds from 'Both Sides Now' are two entirely different animals. One is from a novel that is attempting to verbalize the innermost thoughts and feelings of it's characters, one character in particular. The other is a song lyric, which by its very nature, has to be succinct and also rhythmic and other things that a work of prose does not have to be. I guess it's comparing apples and oranges in the end.
