I had my TV on in the background while I was on the computer, and I heard THE CIRCLE GAME being played without vocals! Turns out that this movie called MARRIED TO IT used Joni's song for the opening credits. It stars Beau Bridges and Stockard Channing as an aging hippie couple, Robert Sean Leonard and Mary Stuart Masterson as a young couple, plus Ron Silver and an excruciating Cybill Shepard (she CAN'T ACT!). I didn't see the whole movie, but the arrangement of CIRCLE GAME was a nice surprise. Out of nowhere. Have a beautiful day! Joni was so delightful in the interview. Such a great storyteller. What struck me the most was that she seemed really fixated on 9/11, as most of us were during that strange time. And what a gift - to watch the piano improvisation and T'LOG performances. Though - in all honesty I think the T'LOG sneak peek got a little out of hand. Did you see how exhausted the interviewer was by the end? She had said, "Well we only have 10 minutes left.", but Joni just went on and on and on. But what are you going to do? lol. Tell Joni Mitchell, "we've heard enough, thank you?" I'm sure the audience was thrilled. But I felt a wee bit sorry for the interviewer as she tried to gracefully find a way to bring the evening to a close, "So...uh, do you feel like a world leader?". lol. I really liked Angelica Houston's commentary too, does anyone know what her relationship to Joni is? Are they good friends? What a fabulous freebie. Thanks Ashara! Jenny SCJoniGuy@aol.com wrote: I FINALLY got around to watching the rest of this video last night. Unfortunately, my VCR/DVD player is in my bedroom, so when I stretch out to watch a video or DVD, it's usually at night and it usually doesn't take me very long to go Zzzzzzzz... Anyway, this video was a REAL treat, and thanks to Ashara for making this available to us, and for snagging it in the first place. I know why it was such a special night for those of you who were there. The first part was OK, but when Joni herself shows up and does her interview, and then plays the piano (!!) and then practically performs a T'log concert it's enthralling. I loved the interview, although Joni does tend to fall into the same responses, but that's to expected as she's asked the same questions over and over. The piano section was spectacular. Watching her just sit down and spontaneously chord out some passages and hearing some of those "Joni-esque" chord sequences and notes...wow, very cool. For her to not be composing and recording some of this stuff seems like such a waste as she is such a unique talent on the keyboard. As for the T'log performances, I have to say that I enjoyed most of these better than the ones on the CD because with Joni playing the music tracks on a boombox and singing live into a separate mic, her voice was more out front & she wasn't doing battle with these overwrought arrangements and orchestral sections. Plus her vocals sound freer, she throws in some scat and improv, and you can see her get into the vocal. Very cool. Also, she does some of "Coyote", enough to see why it wasn't included in T'log. I don't think it worked AT ALL, the orchestra sucks all the rhythm and spunky fun right out of it. Joni, you got it PERFECT the first time. Anyway, I'd be interested to hear what others think of the video. Yeah, but that's what I thought was so cool, the enthusiasm that Joni had for the project and how that reflected in her vocals. Of course, for most of the intro's she was looking at Larry and having him tell her what song it was, and then starting late to catch up like when she sings in about 2 syllables "hearditinthewindlastnightsoundedlikeapplause", I enjoyed her sense of fun a lot. I only wish that sense of joy and fun had been captured in the actual recordings that were released. Most of them just sound sooooo tired. I recently "discovered" God Must Be a Boogie Man, but to get to it you have to wade through the dirge concerto of Woodstock, Slouching, Judgement, Sire, FTR, and Trouble Child! Of the many things wrong with this release, sequencing is one. But Boogie Man has some great moments and features Shorter's best work on T'log. A few years back I used to play Dreamland for my 7th graders every day . . .it was the "clean up song." (in the artroom. . . or jungle, depending on how you look at it). So instead of telling them to clean up all I had to do is put the song on. (not to say that they really "clean up.") (okay, they do clean up somewhat). The kids liked it. Tori HAS released the studio recording of ACOY, on a sampler CD called "Spew U" and also as an extra track on a cd-single. There are a couple live versions floating around out there, on ebay. I've not heard a live version yet that was any decent quality. River also appears on bootlegs sold on ebay, no official release of that one as far as I know. We've got a live version from her Indy show of 2001 in our "covers" collection. Tori has also played Both Sides Now live, although to my knowledge (and I'm no Tori expert) she's only done the first verse as an intro to "Cloud On My Tongue". Hope that helps. Oh, and the wonderful Garth Hudson accompanied Mr Andersen throughout, on the accordion or on the keyboards and, once again, it s utterly impossible not to watch his hands. Catherine >> Hey, Catherine, I loved your story about going to see Eric Anderson (and his recollections of Joni) and I keep meaning to see him when he's performing on Long Island (which seems to be often.) I know what you mean about getting emotional/crying; I've always been very sensitive but some things really move me to tears lately (one particular slide show on the VietNam war that a local Long Island newspaper photographer did (her father was killed there) comes to mind.) The recent VH1 tribute to Warren Zevon was another. But I think there's just such an indescribable experience when an artist performs a favorite song of yours; it's amplified in the case where you've loved someone and their work for so long and then you finally get to see/hear them live, possibly for the first time. It's like all that pent-up emotion flows out at once. This sounds like an innacuracy to me - Paul Simon is a true musician, has put out some really wonderful recordings (even in the last 5 years, actually), and not one to do 'overdubs' and such, TV or not. In fact, I really would wonder why they'd do that when nowadays they could just use that pitch correction thing that corrects for flat singing in the mix so artists can maintain pitch perfect performances regardless of whether they can actually sing or not (truly evil). All of our r'n'r heroes and heroines are approaching the '60 yard line' , so does that mean we should stop supporting them? Just a thought.... Deborah Harry is just shy of 60, and the new Blondie CD (not out in the states yet) is one of the most vibrant things I've heard all year.
