The details on how to sub/unsub are on the jmdl site at http://www.smoe.org/lists/joni.info The particular info you're looking for is about 3/4 down the page. I'm guessing you're getting individual posts and that you've chosen to get ALL of the posts. If you want to get the joni-only stuff, you may wish to consider either the joni-only individual posts, or, maybe a better option for you, the joni-only digest. It takes my breath away to hear it again describing such as a close encounter with La Mitchell...... but even more so because I am familiar with that stretch of gorgeous highway. I have posted before about when we took an Alaskan family cruise and how I made sure we added some time to explore the region. (replete with my kids' whining about our mission) We found Lord Jim's, but did not pin down her exact spot up there. The area is breathtakingly beauteous and just being physically near where she built her stone retreat and wrote music reduced me to mush. Another reason I love the story is I had a '72 PINTO! What a lemon. Question: wasn't she up there after the JT break up? I find it very interesting Graham was there with her.....am I confused about the time frame? Yes, this CD is so incredibly sweet! 'Blue' is definitely a gem. And just when I had grown tired of 'Both Sides Now' along comes a singer named Terry Gonga who brought the song back to life for me! One of the best covers I've ever heard! I just finished watching the 'Let's Sing Out' video. What a treasure! Joni is so young and beautiful.. and her facial expressions while singing are still the same ones that she uses today. I guess I don't know what I'm saying here, except that she is still the same beautiful person now that she was back then. There was another group on the video who performed 'Get Together.' I really liked their rendition, and it somehow reminded me of Joni's 'This Flight Tonight.' Instead of singing "try to love one another, right now," they sang "try to love one another, yeah, yeah," which immediately made me think of Joni's line "you got the loving that I like, all right." Something about the "yeah yeah's" and the "all rights" seemed so similar to each other. Combined with the fast strumming also made 'This Flight Tonight' come to my mind. Is my mind going? Or is it just late? Thanks to Bob for the CD's and video.... and to Simon, and everyone else who may have been behind the scenes on these projects. Foreward: My vision: We need someone to write a very short note explaining what the book is, the sprit in which the works were written, and birthday wishes. Comments? Takers? Order of the works: As it stands, the works are simply in the order in which they appeared on the list. Do we like this idea, or would we prefer a Joni-release-date-chronological order? Or ? Regarding the group that sings "Get Together" on the video - that's the Allan Ward Trio, don't know anything about them except obviously that they're Canadian. For me, it shows a real contrast between a typical folk performance of the day and the level that Joni had attained then. And since many have not or will never hear it, here are the lyrics to her song "Favorite Colour" that she sings in the 1965 portion. I met a child a year ago, whose eyes would never see She asked me with a timid smile "What color is a tree"? In summertime, a tree is green, In autumn, gold and red In winter they are frosted white When all their leaves are shed. "I know the sky is blue" she said, "and silver is the sand, and apples are the brightest red, what color is a man?" Man is many colors, child, Some are yellow, some are brown And some are black as sightlessness, some white as eider down She took her crayons from a box, And placed them in my glove And said "By mixing all of these, comes my favorite colour - love" Any of you guitarists have this transcribed yet? ;~) Bob NP: Joni, "Night In The City" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2003 15:19:24 -0400 From: "Richard Flynn" Subject: RE: sweet 16 take 2 and lets sing out Well-- it's in open G tuning: (DBDGBD) with a capo at fret #4. She uses standard tuning on the John Phillips tune & I like the little bluesy bend. So--she can play without "cheating." My friend David & my girlfriend & I were holding a private wake for Johnny Cash, playing old & new stuff, including the video of the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt." Then I played the Let's Sing Out tape for them & we all agree that it is amazing how much Joni grew as a songwriter and performer in just one year. It's nice to have the performances of "Born to Take the Highway" and the new "Favourite Colour" but "Just Like Me," "Urge for Going, & "Night in the City" in particular represent a quantum leap forward in songwriting skill. I do have to say that the Gilbert & Sullivan duet made us all cringe. My friend, David, is older than I--well he's 6 months older than Joni to be exact--& remembers seeing Judy Colins on this show as early as 1962 (when he was living in Canada. As a youngster, intensely interested in folk music, I regularly conned my parents into taking me to hear my favorite acts, usually at the legendary Cellar Door--this is how I got to see Joni in a club in '68 when I was 13 and well under the 18-year-old drinking age. We also saw Judy Collins there right after "Wildflowers" and because my little sister was sitting with us right next to the tiny stage & she was so young & cute, Judy came and sat at our table between sets, signed my copy of "Wildflowers" and gushed about how cute my sister was. (Later, when I was over 18, I took the same sister to the same club to see Patti Smith right after "Horses.") My sister (Kathy is her name) was reminiscing with me about musical things when we went on vacation to the beach this past summer, & she said, "You know, I'll never forgive you that you took some girlfriend to see Bruce Springsteen (in 1974) instead of me. WHITE men" Emiliano. I don't think race has ever mattered with bodyguards in the US, at least not since Joni has been famous. Big ones probably cost more than small ones, but that's it! And I never thought of the "gentlemen" in the song as being bodyguards for that matter. I always thought of them as lovers, or gophers, or hangers-on. She also sings "fifteen gentlemen" (I think) on "Miles of Aisles" and Joni has never needed fifteen bodyguards! (Although she might if she ever decides to drop in on a bunch of us weirdos at a Jonifest!) --Bob, who should be packing but is checking e-mail ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2003 23:39:03 -0500 From: David Sadowski Subject: Beach Boys (SJC) Yes, the Holland CD does include the "Mt. Vernon and Fairway" material that originally appeared as a bonus 7" with the LP. I've read that Brian Wilson is working on a new album that may incorporate some material he wrote along with Andy Paley in the late 90s. I agree about the production work on Imagination... a little too "adult contemporary" for my taste, maybe this is one reason he ditched producer Joe Thomas. Interestingly, the same friend who first turned me on to Joni Mitchell ( I think it was Ladies of the Canyon) also loved The Beach Boys and that's how I first got into them as well... via the much under-appreciated record Friends. I have also read that Brian would sometimes listen to Blue at top volume, over and over, for hours on end. I think it's regrettable that they have never worked together... give a listen to Morning Morgantown and then This Whole World and tell me that there isn't some sort of affinity there... In the meantime, Brian's tour next year will feature a 35 minute SMiLE suite, and there are reports that a 4-disc SMiLE box set is in the offing too... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2003 22:49:10 -0700 From: Rick and Susan Subject: Re: sweet 16 take 2 and lets sing out Now with full JC On 9/13/03 3:53 PM, rflynn@frontiernet.net wrote > On another note, I definitely remember a television appearance before LoTC, > where she sang the lyrics to "For Free" as "Got a black limousine / and two > white men / escorting me to the hall." Anyone heard of this version? This is the version I heard her sing live twice in '69 and was surprised when LoTC came out with the words changed.
