I've had most of this worked out in standard tuning for a while but some of the changes up and down the fretboard really tax the fingers. A pinky-stretch too far perhaps. To the extent that, in the spirit of caving completely, I've dug out my semi-acoustic, re-strung it with medium gauge strings anticipating kate bennet's recommendations, and tuned that sucker to the proper Passion Play tuning. Trouble is, I'm left with fingers with nothing to do and a break-away digital revolt seems somehow inevitable! Mmmm, I'll alert the press..LOL! And talking (as Catherine McKay was) about breaking strings. I use Elixir Polyweb 010s on my Taylor and the G string breaks on that in standard if you even look sideways at it!! Dammit! Tasmania. Friday 12th Sept. There I was in 'Collectors Corner'.... a Junk shop and I had gone thru my cassette collection at home (why had I bought some of this stuff?) and taken it to the shop and the 'nice' gentleman/owner of shop, looked at what I had put on the counter, (about 140 tapes) some of the cassettes were 30 years old...after humming and haaaing.. and beard stroking....he said he would give me a price for them (not bad really) but as credit rather than cash. Then I looked around the shop..to see what he had....oh dear...nothing. So I said I will come in next time. He asked what I was looking for? "Music?...Joni Mitchell?".....I said "Ah" he said and went off in the back room and returned with 3 CD's......Turbulent Indigo, Night Ride Home and Hejira! "Want these?" he said........I waited for the haggle and tantrum from me...but no he just handed them over!!! Clutching my treasures...I got into the waiting car outside the shop, with wife at the wheel. "what did you get?"......... I knew what would happen....... So showed her........I had them hidden at 1st....Yes I am an adult of 45 years...but my wife can be scary!!!!! as the car sped off.........I tried not to hear her say.......... "that bloody woman again!!" did I say my/the wife has bought me new head phones. and now on the Australian Telly...next week the ABC is showing ALL 700 episodes of Doctor Who...that's 3 and 1/2 years of it.......my poor wife (she is called Anna)......more muttering..."bloody Joni Mitchell and bloody Doctor Who!!!!!!!" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2003 10:14:32 +0100 From: "Paul Castle" Subject: Hitcher on the Highway A while back Ashara asked me if I could send her a copy of the story Rick Scott (Vancouver songwriter and dulcimer player) told me about Joni. Coming across it this morning, I thought I'd re-post it - it's appeared on the jmdl a few times, but for newcomers (and oldtimers who might enjoy re-reading), here it is ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "In 1971, I was hitchhiking with my wife Sue, my friend JR Stone and my dog Mousse, up the Sechelt (Sunshine) Coast of British Columbia. It was tough for three hippies and a dog to catch a ride, but after about half an hour a woman driving a beat up Ford Pinto pulled over. Big and shaggy, Mousse immediately climbed into the front seat and laid his head down on the driver's lap. JR slid in next to him, Sue and I got in the back and we headed off down the road. The woman was patting Mousse's head and complimenting us on what a nice dog he was. She asked us how far we were going... about 30 kilometres to Pender Harbour. Between her question and our ability to answer, there was a group realization that the driver was Joni Mitchell. Each of us took turns trying to articulate the name of our destination, but all that came out was stammering. When we finally managed to tell her, she said she could take us almost all the way but she had to stop off at Lord Jim's Lodge to pick up a friend. She said she might go to the pub but, if we were still hitchhiking when they came out, they would give us a ride the rest of the way. I think we just sat there staring at Joni Mitchell stroking Mousse's head. I was fantasizing that in the next life I might be lucky enough to come back as a dog. When we got to the turnoff she pulled over and as we were getting out she noticed my instrument case and asked what it was. When I told her it was a dulcimer she said, "Way out, can I see it?" The next thing I knew she was examining my dulcimer with great interest. JR Stone is a soft spoken North Carolina mountain man of few words, so I volunteered the information that he had built my instrument. She beamed at him and examined the dulcimer even more closely. After a few minutes she asked if he would build her one. With a great deal of difficulty he finally managed to answer, "Sure". As Joni left us, she renewed her offer to take us further later and asked JR where she could find him. We told her where we would be for the weekend. We couldn't believe what had just happened and didn't think we'd ever see her again. Nonetheless, we stopped hitchhiking and just stood by the road. An hour later she came back down the road with her friend in the passenger seat and stopped to pick us up. Paying no mind to the passenger, Mousse jumped straight onto his lap and settled back down with his head on Joni. We all squeezed in the back and she introduced us to Graham (Nash). She drove us to Pender Harbour and next day came to visit to discuss dulcimer specifications with JR. I was amazed when she took up my dulcimer, tuned all the strings to the same note and proceeded to play "A Case of You" from her "Blue" album. I'll never wash my dulcimer again. Over the next three weeks JR built her an exquisite mountain dulcimer. But it took him another week to deliver it because he was so shy. She was so delighted, she paid him a hundred dollars more than his original quote, which I think was $300. Over 20 years later, in 1996, I was reading a Rolling Stone article about Joni and in the accompanying photograph there she was with JR's dulcimer hanging on the wall behind her. I must admit I felt a twinge of jealousy that JR got in Rolling Stone before I did. JR Stone still lives and builds amazing instruments in Boone, North Carolina. He has built me several four string dulcimers and a 6 string and bass dulcimer as well." What a fantastic story, Paul! I certainly hadn't seen it before. Thanks for posting this. C - To me homely would mean no great beauty and i can't argue with that. That caused me to drag out my Random House ( which I think is a great dictionary, for explanations such as those that follow), which defines homely as 1. Lacking in physical attractiveness; not beautiful; unattractive: a homely child. 2. Not having elegance, refinement or cultivation 3. Proper or suited to the home or to ordinary domestic life; plain; unpretentious Simple, homely (homey), plain imply absence of adornment or embellishment..... In the US, homely usually suggests absence of natural beauty: an unattracitive person almost homely enough to be called ugly. In England, the word suggest a wholesome simplicity without artificail refinement or elegance; since it characterizes that which is comfortable and attractive, it is equivalent to homey. Perhaps that accounts for part of the difference in our reactions, Colin ? > > > B - I think he was trying to get under my skin. He succeeded just a bit, I > suppose, but I never let on ;-) C - It would have mine too-it seems to have been said just offend. Meanness like that is not nice. My brother was needling me, and he knows I can handle it. He has a great heart - for example, when my dad (88) recently broke a bone in his back, he moved in with my parents for a month to help care for him (even though he was having some health problems of his own). But, like most of us, he has his 'moments' from time to time. As you said, maybe I had gotten under his skin (albeit unintentionally) and provoked his retort. I've been known to do that, too ;-) Bobsart ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2003 08:06:18 -0700 (PDT) From: Jenny Goodspeed Subject: Re: [NortheastJonifest] Re: words read the other way Martin - this is so funny. A couple of years ago the family were gathered round the kitchen table during the Christmas holidays. Auntie Deirdre was knitting. My sister (Ruth) and I were reading Q Magazine (UK version of Mojo or Rolling Stone) and a New Year's edition supplement. There was an enlarged quote from a musician in the middle of the page that Ruth was reading which included the word 'cunt'. My aunt reflected in her high, slightly shakey polished tones, "D'you know, I've always wondered what cunt means." There are some errors here if you can find them and also a somthing I thought was funny that they did. Best, Paz Joni MitchellbS FOUR INNOVATIVE AND ACCLAIMED GEFFEN ALBUMS REMASTERED AND REISSUED, WITH THREE PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACKS, FOR FOUR-CD BOX SET Her recent ruminations about retiring aside, Joni Mitchell remains one of the most important, influential, independent and iconoclastic music artists of our time. In 2003 her bBig Yellow Taxib became a hit for Counting Crows and Vanessa Carlton; in 2002 she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, and a 2001 Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal improbably had her in a category with Christina Aguilera, Macy Gray, Madonna, Aimee Mann and Britney Spears. In 1999 she was among VH1bs b100 Greatest Women Of Rock bNb Roll.b The four-CD box set The Complete Geffen Recordings (Geffen/UMe), released August 19, 2003, executive produced by Mitchell, and digitally remastered from the original master tapes, brings together the four albums from the singer-songwriter-guitarist-producerbs 1982-1991 Geffen tenure plus three previously unreleased bonus tracks: demos of Bob Dylanbs bItbs All Over Now Baby Blue,b bTwo Grey Roomsb and bGood Friends.b The package includes complete lyrics, each albumbs original artwork, an essay by Mitchell and her insightful reminiscences regarding most of the songs. After delving into deep jazz, Mitchell joined Geffen and balanced her pop and jazz sensibilities on 1982bs Wild Things Run Fast. Reaching #25 pop, the disc included her highest charter in eight years with its Top 50 cover of the Elvis Presley hit b(Youbre So Square) Baby I Donbt Care.b Among the guests accompanying her were guitarists Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather, saxman Wayne Shorter, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, singers Lionel Richie and James Taylor, and bassist/soon-to-be husband Larry Klein, co-producer of her subsequent albums. For Dog Eat Dog (1985), keyboards and synthesizers dominated the cutting edge album that earned a Grammy nomination for engineering. Thomas Dolby worked on the project and guest vocalists included Michael McDonald, Don Henley and Taylor, with a spoken word piece by actor Rod Steiger. Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm (1988), heavy on percussion from Manu KatchC), featured some of her sharpest commentary on modern culture. Hitting the Top 50, the album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. b Snakes And Ladders,b with Henley on vocals, was Top 40 Mainstream Rock. Also heard were Peter Gabriel, Tom Petty, Billy Idol, Wendy & Lisa, Willie Nelson and Indian actor Iron Eyes Cody. Night Ride Home (1991) returned her to a smaller ensemble, spotlighting her voice and acoustic guitar. With a turn from singer Brenda Russell and the track bSlouching Toward Bethlehemb based on a W.B. Yeats poem, the album was her most critically-acclaimed since the b70s. Moving on to other labels--her next album, Turbulent Indigo, won the Best Pop Album Grammy--Joni Mitchell has continued to inspire. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2003 10:28:52 -0700 From: "Lori Fye" Subject: Re: I'm already glad > imagine, easy quick witted banter on an email list. This was mid-to late 60's, so Tom Rush, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Dylan, then Joni, of course. Well, plus Janis Joplin, Norman Blake, Incredible String Band, lots of variety! My first wife liked Joni, still does in fact. We went to Joni concerts, listened to a LOT of Joni at home, etc. No problem there! Well, we had other problems; she was/is a dedicated Mormon, but we won't go into that here. Plus, she loves James Taylor! My second (present) wife, doesn't actively dis-like Joni, but doesn't really "get" her either. She bought me the "Shadows and Light" DVD, the "Woman of Heart and Mind" DVD, (plus two Joni books), . . . but she won't watch any of them with me. She's into what I call "pop" country and western, which I absolutely cannot stand to listen to . . . Yet, thankfully, all my life I've never experienced any of the truely hateful anti-Joni comments that other listers have reported. Maybe I'm just lucky in that regard? So maybe it's not possible to like pop C&W, and like Joni too? Anyone out there like both? By the way, I like John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, and THAT kind of country, just not the pop stuff that clogs the radio waves these days. Best Regs. I got 3 cool boots this week. One is the Jimi Hendrix self solo recording he did at the infamous Chelsea Hotel which is pretty cool. Then I got two discs of Stephen Stills Jamming with Jimi Hendrix. On one of these discs is a couple of versions of them doing Woodstock. I plan on duping those and sending them to the covers king (can't recall his name right now but you know who I mean) for mass distribution. Its been a good week for music which I guess is why I am dreadfully behind on the list. "Me and you and a dog named Boo ...." Mostly cause once it gets in your head - you are soo stuck with it! Peace, Susan (running to the stereo and hoping to change the record playing in my head!) It was tough for three hippies and a dog to catch a ride, but after about half an hour a woman driving a beat up Ford Pinto pulled over.
