It occurs to me that I was incorrect about owning all of Joni's releases, as I don't have the latest one yet. I know there's a version with fancy packaging available, right? So I'll hunt for one of those. I saw an interview on TV once where Bruce Springsteen mentioned how everybody felt let down by Elvis Presley for his weight gain and style of performance at the end of his career. He said that this was a mistake, as Elvis didn't owe his fans anything, he'd already accomplished so much. I pretty much agree with that sentiment. An artist's first obligation is to him/herself. And smoking cigarettes, however mystefying a habit in this day and age (quitting isn't miraculous, lots of people do it all the time), isn't as bad as some of the behavior that extended from the personal lives of some people to end their lives altogether (Hendrix being the most disheartening example... to me... due to the lost potential). On the other hand, it's hard to justify, say, taping off the last two thirds of a guitar neck (or the keys of a piano, etc), and playing with what's left, despite virtuosic skill and nuanced approach to an instrument. Sure, an accomplished artist (like Joni) can do wonderful things with what remains... but Picasso didn't paint blue paintings forever. It's only saddening when you listen to the earlier stuff, which is chillingly expansive and expressive. A bird with clipped wings can still fly, if not as high. That sounds more negative than I mean it to. I think, while it would be pretending for me to say that Joni hasn't compromised her art ... or the vocabulary available to express her art (even if to a degree)... it's still far more interesting to me to discover what she does with each new opus than what tools she uses to create it. We are indeed lucky that she still puts stuff out for public consumption, as she could quit any time and still be successful, considered a genius, etc. Current Joni is just different, which is fine. I like current Dylan, and late period Billie Holiday, which some people dismiss. Too late, too sleep deprived again... thanks again for sharing your thoughts on the topic! Hi all -- allthough I'm really a lurker, I couldn't resist on this one. See, while I love Joni's early work and her mid-seventies work and her eighties work, it is only because of Turbulent Indigo (I am 27) that I really got it, you know. And I love her voice on that. its beautiful . Hissing, Hejira and Turbulent Indigo remain my favorite albums - so there you go, I like her voice the way it is now as I like it the way it was in the seventies. It's not spitting in the face of God at all. By the way - Joan Baez, who didn't smoke all her life has, has a stripped voice these days. These women are in their sixties, give them a break! I gave up smoking, by the way, three months ago and I am doing fine. When I was still smoking I remember justifying to myself : 'Joni is a smoker' - it's bohemian and countercultural you know. I send this not to intrude. I would first like to say how shocked and saddened to hear of Andrea's death. And to extend my deepest sympathy to Bruce and Andrea's loved ones. I did not know the lady, but felt awful at this terrible news and thought rather than be a coward and not say anything..... I have lost great friends in England in the 1994 and 1996 thru siucide, my best friend and girlfriend, both I thought had everything in the world. The awfulness, when I was both times informed, still remains and self blame plays apart, even though these events were on the other side of the planet. The girlfriend, Sue, I have now contacted her brother, through a mutal freind after 9 years, as I needed to know after all these years, what occured. The brother did not want to talk on the internet as he was still grieving, but let me ramble on and most of my email to him was on all the good times, Sue and I had and how she had improved my life by just being Sue. Her brother thanked me for the thoughts in a one line email reply and last month, sent an email asking would I write to his (and Sue's) parents in London? about Sue as they would like to talk to me about her. I have been putting off, actual pen to paper, as I .....myself find it hard to understand...why? But one cannot ever truly understand what another person feels really. So all we are left with are memories and photos, which with Sue are pretty good, I can even hear her silly laugh! But I am sure that the people they leave behind, they don't mean to hurt? So we must really be thankful, that we have met the person and for the moments with them. and that we can only hope that a troubled person/spirit/soul has now found peace. Again I wish to express my heartfelt sadness at this tragic event and may be Bruce and family take some small comfort from the jmdl list at the LOVE out there for them in this time of saddness. As for LOTC covers, you're right in saying that it's a popular choice for Joni covers...all the songs have been done (except for The Arrangement, which is maybe my favorite track on the disc), and the final 3...Woodstock, BYT, Circle Game...are all pretty much standards in the world of covers. Judy Collins smoked for many years and was a drug and alcohol abuser. She quit, started eating healthy and running, and even today studies weekly with a vocal coach. I see her and Joan live often and neither of them, especially Judy, have shown much waer over the years. I suspect the real reason for Joni's voice is she actually likes what smoking has done. She often eschews her "helium" voice, and "madonna" voice, clear shots at her early influences, and praises the last years of Billie Holliday. Yes, Her voice is not as it was 40 years ago, but it is still lithe and clear > for a woman her age. I'd go further than that - Joan Baez's voice is better than it ever has been, because it's matured with age, deepened and broadened, and you no longer feel the need to worry for the glass in your windows. I have a tape of a BBC programme called 'Songwriter's Circle' with JB, Matraca Berg and Gretchen Peters, and she sounds fantastic. She closes with Diamonds and Rust and wipes the other two off the stage. Wonderful. > Judy Collins smoked for many years and was a drug and alcohol abuser. There's only one version of Joni's latest release, "TRAVELOGUE". It's a 2-CD set in a slip-case. Inside is a hard-bound folder that holds the CDs, with many pages of new paintings. Many of them reflect post-911 imagery. In addition, the lyrics to all of the included songs are printed in a separate booklet. It's too nice to be available in this form forever. My opinion is it will either be cut from the catalog (and become her first CD that's not available) or, more likely, it will be re-released in a stripped-down version. Either way, I would NOT wait. She has 3 DVDs in current release too. 1. The brand-new "Joni Mitchell: Woman Of Heart And Mind" is a song-based documentary by PBS Executive Producer Susan Lacey. Rather than select a director for this project, she pulled rank and assigned herself. Obviously it's a labor of love which is completely appropriate for an artist of Joni's stature. 2. "Shadows and Light" is available officially in the USA on DVD for the first time. This concert (about 1980) was available on VHS in the US (with fewer songs), on LaserDisc (all of the songs) and later from Hong Kong on DVD (all of the songs). This edition sports a purple cover, which reflects Joni's current pallete and a fun collection of tour photos from long-time guitar tech / photographer Joel Bernstein. If I have my history down, Joel shot the covers of FOR THE ROSES, BLUE, and the skating shots on HEJIRA. 3. "Painting With Words and Music" (1998). This one was Joni and a band on a soundstage, doing many, many of her songs. She had some great people with her, as always and I believe she played the Parker Fly / VG-8 throughout. You get Brian Blade on drums and Joni dancing. You don't get Joni playing a Martin acoustic guitar, dulcimer, or grand piano. (I don't think she plays piano at all on that date. Maybe.) It justifies Joni's inclusion based on her myriad of alternate tunings, and rightfully so. What I found humorous though was that the "recommended track" to sample Joni's guitar prowess was "All I Want" from Blue which I believe is a dulcimer track. (sigh) I'm not sure why RS did this "100 best guitarist" thing anyway, as they just did it last year or so, and the guitar world hasn't changed a lot since then, though there were a couple of interesting inclusions...but for the most part it's just them trotting out Page, Clapton, Hendrix, etc. again. Oh, he taught me to love him and promised to love And to cherish me over all others above How my heart now is wond'ring misery can tell He's left me no warning, no words of farewell. That's not to say that they're not fun, of course, but let's face it, the world can probably pootle along without the lists. As to RS's guitarist pantheon, although I haven't seen it, from the names I've heard so far it sounds like another retread, trotting out the same old predictable names (like Top ten film lists which you just KNOW are going to have Citizen Kane at no. 1). Eric Clapton? Does nothing for me, gifted though he clearly is. Jeff Beck? Ditto. I'd rather listen to Robert Cray any day. And don't get me started on the real technocrats like Gary Moore, Steve Vai, etc etc. I'm almost tempted to say Joni would be better off not included (not that she doesn't deserve to be, I hasten to add), as being one of only two women makes the whole thing smack of tokenism, especially given that the other woman was Joan Jett, whose credentials I'm none too sure about. And as Catherine and others have pointed out, choosing "All I Want" as epitomising Joni's guitar playing borders on the perverse. I'd be surprised if this list were compiled by anything other than a group of middle aged men. For what it's worth, if someone forced me to compile such a hit parade, it would certainly include Bonnie Raitt and Shawn Colvin, and I'd be tempted to throw in a few curve balls like Polly Harvey, Jill Sobule and Wendy Melvoin. Since Mark has (wisely, I believe) forwarded Bruce's recent messages to the entire JMDL community, I would like to do the same with just this one post. I have been discussing with Bruce and Les the idea of adding a tribute to Andrea to the "In Memory" section of jmdl.com. I'm still searching my computers for a certain photo that Andrea sent me, one in which she was standing in her garden, but have come up empty-handed thus far. Has anyone other than me received a photo of Andrea? If you have, please contact me privately. Also, if any of you have favorite posts or phrases of Andrea's that you can recall and would like to include, please email the posts or links to me. If you need help locating them in the jmdl archives, I can assist you. Thanks to all. I like that quote/link that you posted yesterday about njc and pugs and greyhounds but mostly pugs. That gave me a chuckle and when I read it, I remembered it. I think it was you that posted it. Unfortunately I usually delete my e-mails once I've read them. I can tell you that Andrea did e-mail me privately quite a few times to tell me that she liked one or another of my lame jokes. I used the word "snarky" in an e-mail just about a week ago and she e-mailed me privately to say how much she liked that word - she thought I had made it up, but I had to confess that I didn't. Unfortunately I didn't keep that e-mail either. And she also offered me many encouraging words about my divorce and any other troubles I whined about on-list. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Sep 2003 23:57:17 EDT From: PassScribe@aol.com Subject: Re: Andrea I've just read the post in the last Digest about Andrea taking her own life. I feel I must write to this site on this subject if only to dispel any misconceptions anyone might have regarding Andrea and myself. As many of you know, there was a post to the effect that Andrea lived only about an hour and a half from Full Moon Resort but wasn't going to the JoniFest. I had posted a message around that time to the effect that I thought it was sad that someone would be so close to the site and not be going (believing, in my naive exuberance for the fest, that all Joni fans MUST want to go.) Andrea read my post, was quite upset over it and sent me a somewhat angry reply. I, in turn, apologized and explained my reasoning and wished her well as I understood at that time that she had some serious personal problems. In the month since JoniFest, Andrea and I corresponded several times; we each apologized for the misunderstanding ("All's forgiven, by the way.") and had several interesting chats through e-mail. I found out she was a teacher: "I am a school psychologist and have been in public education since 1974, a special ed teacher, an administrator, a principal and a school psychologist for the past 14 years." We discussed my son, who is also a teacher, and we exchanged views about the profession: I told her I had also taught some courses in Adult Ed (auto mechanics and photography) and that, looking back, I wish I could have been a musician and a (music) teacher as a career. In our recent exchanges, and in her recent posts to the JMDL site, I detected nothing troubling about her messages and I actually thought she was doing quite well. That's probably why I was so surprised to hear this disheartening news. She mentioned in one of her last posts that she really wanted a tee-shirt with the art from "Both Sides Now" on it in a "small" but couln't find one. I sent her an e-mail, on Monday, Sept. 1st, offering to make her one. I never received a reply... now I know why. I just wanted everyone to know thatbdespite a rocky beginning to our relationshipbI considered her a friend by the time I received this news and I'm deeply saddened to learn of her death. Is there another e-mail address I can reach you at to go over the details? I always read your posts to her regarding Jonifest as well-intentioned and regarded her reaction with understanding, too. It's interesting that she was a school psychologist - for some reason I thought she was an attorney. I thought she was a very perceptive person. I feel bad now that I did not correspond with her more - no reason not to other than I hardly write back to even my old close friends here half the time because of my own time and life limitations. I was also thinking today of her post about the small Joni t-shirt (which I have) and how I wish I could have sent it to her.
