Yes, I accompanied Ron into the wilds of Greenwich Village looking for that perfect Martin guitar. What Ron didn't tell yall is that on the way he was approached by a young black man who asked for a contribution to the United Negro Pizza Fund!!!!!!! And Ron reached into his pocket and gave a very generous donation, because Ron is simply an amazingly kind person. What the black guy didnt know was that this generous donation was coming from a first rate South African white guy! Alright!!!! Which of the following artists never covered Joni? a. Judy Collins b. Bob Dylan c. Nick Drake d. Gordon Lightfoot Discussion: a. could be eliminated right away, of course. b. I knew from something recently on the list that Bob Dylan had covered a Joni song, altho' I don't know which one. c & d I didn't know about. d., a fellow Canadian "folkie," at least, initially, seemed a likely suspect to have covered a Joni tune, but I didn't know, specifically; might be a trick question. So, being impatient, I didn't officially guess "c"; I looked at the answer key right away. c is the right answer. Tim Spong Dover, Del., U.S.A. P.S. I see that several others answered about "Johnny Angel" = Shelly Fabares before I did. I omitted to state the ususal disclaimer, "I receive the only-Joni Digest; this question may already have been answered." _________________________________________________________________ Get MSN 8 and enjoy automatic e-mail virus protection. http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Aug 2003 13:14:04 -0400 From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Which one did you miss [Was: Re: Joni Mentions in "Women Who Rock" July/Aug. Neither Drake nor Lightfoot has ever recorded a Joni song and released it. I suspect that since they were Canadian contemporaries and played some live dates together, coffeehouses and et cetera, that at some point Gordon sang one of her songs, if only duetting with her on "Circle Game" or something. But in all my research I've never seen any hard evidence of it. If the writer knows of one, it's deliciously obscure, and as such is not really fairly included as part of this question. So...take solace in the fact that you didn't REALLY miss one at all! :~) Bob NP: Tom Waits, "Singapore" PS: Dylan recorded "Big Yellow Taxi" and it was released on a 1973 outtakes release titled "Dylan". Not really something that he ever wanted to see the light of day, and notable only because he alters the lyric to "don't it always go to show". ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Aug 2003 14:06:17 -0400 From: "Jerry Notaro" Subject: test - please ignore test ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Aug 2003 20:33:13 -0500 From: "mia ortlieb" Subject: re: charlie angel Yikes! There is nothing so original in L.A. (and I've checked and this station is not part of the Clear Channel cartel!) It's almost commercial free and they play equal parts the Rat Pack (Frank, Dean, Sammy), Tony Bennett, Glenn Miller orchestra, Satchmo, Johnny Mathis, Ray Charles and equal parts Diana Krall, Diane Shurr, Diane Reeves, Norah Jones, Michael Buble, Steve Tyrell and even a little fecking Gordon Lightfoot thrown in. Most amazing is that they played two Joni within a couple hours one night - the orchestral Both Sides Now and At Last. It's more airplay than she's gotten in LA in awhile. If you ever go to Vegas check out this station - it really makes the mood in Sin City. That chord change... you know, the one that comes after each opening line, follows "Killer Kyle", "on the sidewalk with chalk", etc. That's a beautiful chord change, I'd love to know why it has the effect on me that it does.<< Bob, I've got to tell you, I get really hooked on certain chord changes. My piano teacher and I had a big discussion on this subject one evening and she says people have individual reactions to certain musical notes and chords and everyone is a bit different in the combinations that most affect them. We may share a love for the same chord but then you and I may differ on our appreciation of others. I think I'm drawn most to the chord structures and changes in songs like "Rainy Night House", "Ludwig's Tune/JOTMAS" and the beginning of "My Old Man." BTW, the new Joe Jackson album is FULL of beautiful chords & changes, many on the minor side. After all, if you just send a blank message, then it could be construed that it was some kind of mistake, and indeed no message is communicated at all. And you could say "Joni rules", or simply "Joni", but why not distill it down even more, down to the ONE KEY letter in Joni's name...surely you wouldn't use the "o" or the "i", and why on earth would you use the consonant in the MIDDLE of her name? No, the "J" is the perfect choice! It really says it all, and there's no way one can argue with it. J. Brilliant. Bob First I read this and thought, "What an astute observation, Bob."
