The first time I heard it was on the recording with Joni and Johnny Cash and I was curious about it then. I wondered why it sounded so similar to Scarborough Fair and even shares the same 2 lines: "Remember me to one who lives there. She once was a true love of mine." Did this song originate as an old standard folk song, or did Simon and Garfunkel "borrow" from Dylan? Just curious... I have not been very active on the list until lately, but would like to contribute more and look forward to sharing with you. Here's hoping the coming months will be kinder. Simon learned it while touring the UK. Dylan's Nashville Skyline was released 3 years after S&G's version of the song, although Dylan may have heard it during his folk days. That dull ache sank in again hours before I was to depart from this years fest. The realization that it was coming quickly to an end overcame me and I started having sensory depravation long before my senses stopped being bombarded with so much wonderful music and love. Oh but it hurts so good. Jack, Lane, Alison, and I drove up from Long Island on Thursday night partying all the way of course. We saw the Utility Co. truck tending to the downed power lines a few miles from the resort. Little did we know that we would arrive in total darkness. Lama and Patrick met us with flash lights and led us to Lez cottage where the party was in full swing. It took Victor about 19 songs before he realized that we were there. It was a little crazy arriving in the dark like that, but I soon was in the comfort zone after a few hugs and screams of recognition of things and people that go bump in the night. Thanks very much to the Texas Tush for the "cup in the dark". Thanks to the Lez Cottage gang for such a warm welcome with cold beers and shots of Tequila and a real good jam session over Guzzi's sleeping body. The three evenings of performances were once again mind blowing. Thanks to everyone who helped me with mine and thanks to those who allowed me to accompany them in theirs. Special thanks to everyone for allowing me to sit in on Cajon (a Peruvian drum instrument that emulates the sound of a whole drum kit). Ashara asked me to bring it for her set and I ended up sitting in with Stryngs as well as many other sets. It was the first time I have ever played it on stage altho it has been a part of my home jam sessions for quite a few years now. Ashara commandeered mine to take back to Boston with her so I have to order a new one. For those of you who asked me about getting them, the retail is $390 each on them but I can get them for $234 + freight. They have a few accessories you can get with them as well. Like the pad to sit on, a Zither tuning key (to adjust the strings inside), and a carry bag. Anyone who is interested I would be happy to hook you up with one. It was so amazing to see Rachel and her folks come to the fest. What is more amazing is that Jason is a friend of my friend Bill Dillon (who played with Joni and a million others) who lives in Hamilton. My hat is off to Jason and Karyn for supporting Rachel in coming to the fest. I am looking forward to seeing Rachel perform a set of music next year, and sitting in with a bunch of others. For all the wonderful gifts that I received as presents or I won in the raffle I am eternally grateful. I got some many new CD's to listen to including the new Jaco, Stryngs (this may very well be CD of the year up against some rough competition like EastMountainSouth), Anita, two Lucy Websters, my bitch Giselle's cd, Kay Ashley's CD, a ton of Joni ones, yet another Muller effort, and of course the new found video is just stunning. To Uncle John from my entire family, thanks for the wonderful cheese and cigars. And of course the memories that will be with me forever. I ended up with one of the Song Circle recordings from Friday night. It is a little over 40 minutes of recording. For some reason it cuts out and we missed the last half of that nights song circle. Les if you need any help transferring tapes I would be happy to help. I am gonna tackle this one tomorrow night. Special thanks to Jack Merkel for learning the Nicklecreek stuff. It was great to be able to play those with you in rehearsal and we were all sad that you had to leave early and not perform them with us, you were sorely missed. Can we have a rain check? Just so everyone knows my pics are now up on Chris' site. There is digital proof of Victor sleeping during the performances. And on at least one night I know he went to bed before me. What's it like getting old Victor? And what happened to "we'll sleep when we're dead"? I look forward to the next fest wherever it will be. I like the Full Moon Resort a lot and I think it is a cool place for us. I am also in favor of a roving JoniFest and hope that if we do have some in alternate places, that more people will be able to come. Thanks Anita for letting me touch IT!! To everyone that came this year, thanks so much for filling my life with music joy love and laughter. Special shouts out to all the people who are no longer Jonifest virgins. Hats off to Yael and much love and appreciation for her sound and technical abilities. You found your calling girl, but don't forget to keep playing and singing too. To my travel mates Alison, and Lane and my special bitch Jack for getting me to the airport at that ungodly hour thanks so much. Ashara you done it again love, what the feck were you thinking? That is all for now. Much love and a huge hug. (because of this ..I'm going to try my hand at playing the dulcimer) And thank you Chuck for Rainy Night House...it was beautiful!! Bree, I also enjoyed Chuck's performance on Rainy Night House so much that I've been humming it and hearing it in my head ever since last weekend. Today, as I was getting our yard ready for some company to come over and I put the CD player outside, I had to put on LOTC and immediately put on THAT song. I was transported back to the fest... a place I wish I didn't have to leave. "Mingus" would be 10. Also, not that you asked, but I exclude the two live albums because the material is, for the most part, not being introduced for the first time as it is on the studio albums. If I included them, "Shadows and Light" would be 10, "Mingus" 11, and "Miles of Aisles" 12. No, you're right; African rhythms don't scare me, otherwise I wouldn't be able to include "Hissing of Summer Lawns" in my list of eight. By the way, I don't really consider myself a jazzer. I do play and understand jazz, but I'm a dyed in the wool musical omnivore. - -Fred In a message dated 8/17/2003 11:23:03 PM Eastern Daylight Time, lamadoo@fuse.net writes: > > Fred et al., > > Sometimes it's hard for a blowhard like me to take his lumps.
