I have some time now to play catch up with the Fest Reporting. In brief, it was brilliant. The best I've attended thus far. For a Fest that was hobbled by early lack of uptake, boy did it ever make up for it in the home stretch. Fantastic. In my mind, Full Moon is its natural home. A place with enough space for us all (and more besides - would be attendees please note) yet intimate enough to get to see and be with everyone. Even the ride up there on the bus was a blast with a vocal nexus of us making our presence felt. The meanwhile, Victor lead a Scrabble Fest torching everyone in his path. The journey went by in a flash. More people seemed to be there for the Thursday than last year - perhaps an indication that there is a desire for Fest to be longer than the three day event. Whatever, it was just wonderful to see and be with everyone again. It bears noting that everyone pretty much fell into step with one another immediately, like we'd just seen each other a few weeks before. It was effortless and natural. Hugs featured very heavily. I'm a willing practicioner and it's a readily acquired taste. I may be a shy retiring Scot (HAH!) but I'm not above Cuddles where honour is at stake! The music was so, so good. Really, I've been to organised professional events that failed to engage me as completely as Fest did and does. Especials for me were Susan Guzzi with Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire, Stryngs with Frank's Song, Martin Giles (Stryngs) with May You Never, Kay Ashley with Pink Moon, Bob Muller with A Soldiers Things, Jenny Goodspeed's Harmony Ensemble with Blue, Claud's Let it be Your Heartbeat (which I was supposed to accompany her in the chorus but totally wussed out on). Oh God, Sugerpants! Sublime, featuring Smurf on put-upon rhythm. Jack Neilsen with everything. Giselle with everything. Alison E with a song by the Be Good Tanyas that I don't recall the name of. There will be others I'll be later vexed I forgot to mention, but these spring to mind right now. Trooper Award has to go to Barbara Little who hauled up in a body brace having broken her back in a riding accident the week before. Wow! Having been on oxygen only a few days previously she went on to burn the house down with her set including Black Crow. Fest can do that to a body. Get fixed soon Barbara. Kudos to you and gratitude to your brother for ferrying duties. Most Valuable Player Award to Chris Marshall for ubiquitous Bass. Never seen someone so completely in his element. It was brilliant to witness. As with every Fest, we get to meet new people and that is always a major pleasure and delight. This year I got to meet Miranda (Mags' daughter - heavenly creature, divine gene pool), Jack Merkel, Gerry Notaro, Ron Greer and the Davids Mingus and Rolls. Ah, the Davids. Mmmm. Even New York wasn't big enough to keep us apart. I got to meet them there again while I was laying seige to all that NYC had to offer in shopping. That was Very Very Cool. Sigh ~* OK, moving quickly along. Bette Benedict got up and did a routine which was great fun. Victor wow'd everyone (again) with his solo Broadway Tune. Forgive me, but I don't know it's name but it was a sensation. Roberto's Broadway tunes set was wonderful as were his supporting cast of which there were very many. OMG, Joni's Guitar. I got to play Joni's Guitar. Major Gratitude to Steph and Anita for bringing that to the party. It rained a lot. It rained a helluva lot. We lost power for ages one night. No one seemed to notice much. The Full Moon staff were wonderful. So easy going. Big thanks to everyone who attended. It was a real joy to see you all again, "I long for our next embrace". This year I said no 'Good Byes' just 'See You Later'. It seemed more natural and correct. And because it's dirt under a bridge, it doesn't get rained on, so it stays dry and powdery and fine as opposed to gritty and mud-like. Dirt/sand like this is such that it almost becomes waterproof. Thanks Michael for picking out this lyric. It's a good example of Joni painting with words to describe something that's mundane yet very unique. Or maybe not as much about the 'meaning of life' and more about the unfairness of life, the disparity between the haves and the have-nots, the fat bellies & the hungry little ones. And as Joni has always connected with the seaside & the coast and seems to draw so much strength from that, she relates to the greedy ones who soil the beauty of the scene with bleach bottles, paper plates, oil pails, etc. It's been covered by Lani Hall, a very pretty straightforward vocal, and by Manfred Mann's Earth Band, an 80's pop version that takes some liberties with the words. And again we see this kind of reference: "Some watch their kids grow up" Which she wrote knowing that she would not have the opportunity. Ron, your post was nicely worded & pretty much sums up my experience as well. I tend to be quite shy, despite my sometimes obnoxious posts to the list - I have a hard time meeting new people, or dealing with large groups of people. But I was made to feel at ease by everyone & had a lot of fun.
