I have just had the most wonderful time with all you Jonifesters. And I want to thank you all for that. I'm sorry I didn't get to talk more to everyone - several people I didn't talk to at all :( Can we make the next Jonifest at least a couple of days longer please? A few highlights for me; Meeting John Van Teil, who introduced me to Jack Nielson on Friday afternoon, who played me his beautiful song, 'Shine On Our Love', then delivered a gorgeous set in the evening. John's conversation and cheese! The utterly fantastic Sugarpants thing. btw Ashara, that sure looked painful when you ripped the duc tape off your mouth :! Gisele's song circle songs on Thursday night, and her set on Friday. Gisele, you have SO much sassyness to your act, it's easy to overlook the fact that you sing and play terrifyingly well. If I build a porch, will you come and play on it? Les Ross's set. Your performance made the hair stand up on the back of my neck.. again.. Bob Muller's set. I thought Frank Sinatra was dead, but it seems he's alive and well, with a more gravelly voice. I loved getting up and playing with the band for you all. As many will know, we've barely started playing in front of audiences, and personally, I'd only been on stage once before. It was great to get such a wonderful reception, thank you for all the compliments. I'd like to thank Susan, Paz and Anita so much for asking me to accompany them on their sets - another new experience for me, and another big thrill. It has been great to actually meet so many listers at last. Until now, most of you have just been posts on the list, but know you're real people (doesn't that make you feel good? ;). Damn, and such wonderful people too. While I'm on the subject of thanks - Thank you thank you thank you thank you Ashara. OK. Tired now. Must sleep. When I wake up, I'm looking forward to reading lots of posts about the Fest, to find out everything I missed while I was doing what I was doing. Can't wait to get the CDs/videos............. Martin. In sunny London. NP Jack N's Album. PS Thanks again Chuck E, who gave us a lift to the bus when we realised that we should have arranged something earlier and were about to be stranded. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2003 14:54 +0100 (BST) From: steph@cix.co.uk (Anita Gabrielle Tedder) Subject: Back home safely Hello everyone So many people asked me to let them know if we got back with the blonde guitar in one piece that I thought I'd let you know that - yeah we did. I am sitting here listening to Gisele (God, I miss you, bitch). I can't find enough words to say what I want - Steph has asked me to say that it's been one of the best times in her life. Me too. It seems so inept! I miss you all. Thank Goodness for Joni and you all out there. I have many wonderful friends on this list. I have been here for a year, you know nothing about me. I suffered a major depressive episode in April (complete with suicide attempt) from which I am still recovering so please keep your judgements to yourself. I am not sad. The fact that I choose not to go to Jonifest is not sad. I just do not want to hang out with a bunch of people I do not know for four days. Plus I do not drink so it is not the best environment to be in. Furthermore, it is my mentally ill mother's 80th birthday so I thought I would go see her. See how much you know? PS I am not an introvert. I have many close and wonderful friends. But at the age of 49, I realize I do not have to do things that I do not want to do. Also, I was in Virginia visiting my best friend (since age 7) and I got sick and now I have bronchitis, so excuse me if i do not feel like going and hacking all over people. Andrea Andrea: First of all, I'm very sorry that my comments offended or hurt you; that was totally unintentional. And you're also correct in the fact that I know very little about you other than the little I read in those last few posts before I left for the fest. I now see that you've suffered through some personal problems but, obviously, I would have no knowledge of anything not mentioned in those posts. It's just that I was so excited about going to the fest that it was hard for me to believe that other Joni fans would not also look forward to such an event and try to get there. Certainly, if you don't want to spend a weekend with strangers or be in an envionment where people are drinking heavily, then you should not go. Secondly, if you actually thought there was an "inner circle" of fans that was exclusionary, then I DO feel THAT is disturbing (and this should not be taken personally) especially now that I've been to the fest and found that to be completely false. Yes, there are plenty of folks who've been to these gatherings in the past and who know each other very well but it doesn't mean they shun anyone or make you feel like an outsider. Please accept my apologies for anything I wrote that offended you. I wish you the best of luck in dealing with your personal problems and a speedy recovery from your bout of Bronchitis (which I also contracted in the spring and dealt with for a week.) Kenny B ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 2003 00:17:32 EDT From: PassScribe@aol.com Subject: Long report on JoniFest I have just returned from the long JoniFest weekend, made even longer by stopping on the way home at the house my son & his girlfriend just rented and moved into in Gardner, NYb just southwest of New Paltz. I spent a few days there, fixing a couple of electrical receptacles and the light over the bathroom mirror which wasnbt working. My wife met me there Monday, and on Tuesday, our daughter, son-in-law & the grandkids came up from CT and we all spent the day at nearby Lake Winiwaska State Park. Still on an emotional and musical bhighb from the weekend, I arrived home this afternoon (Wednesday) and checked my e-mail. There, I found the messages from Andrea and Deb, and discovered I offended Andrea through my overzealous but naive belief that all JMDLbers MUST want to attend JoniFest. (I know that when I talk about going out for a great steak dinner, some vegetarians and vegans would not be interestedb but I never imagined that a Joni fan would not want to attend a JoniFest... live and learn!) I was brought down another peg when I brought my film in to be developed and found that I overestimated the power of my flash on my good-but-not-good-enough Pentax point & shoot, so many of my shots at the performance center came out too dark. With all the years of photographic experience under my belt, I still screwed up... bWhat was I THINKING?b (Hummmm... where have I heard THAT before?) It will probably take me DAYS to finish reading all the messages on the LMDL postings so Ibm sending this report off now, knowing full well that Ibll probably repeat something someone else has reported but I want to get this out while itbs fresh in my head. I may add something to this by the time I send in what I can salvage of the photos and it gets posted to the Fest Archives, but these are my first impressions: In the b90bs, I attended four bfan gatheringsb for Todd Rundgren... two in CT , one in Jersey and one in Philly. I met some fine people and had a great time; at one event, we even talked to Todd and members of his band (Utopia) over a speaker phone where we were allowed to ask them questions, etc. At another event, I met Toddbs mom who brought along family photo albums so we saw him opening Christmas presents when he was about 5 years old, etc. But NOTHING Ibve ever attended even came CLOSE to this yearbs JoniFest... for a Joni fanbor a music lover in generalb THIS was a truly incredible experience! I realize there are some very talented people, with jobs or businesses totally unrelated to the world of music, who can simply break out in a song, or pick up a guitar and accompany themselves, or sit down at a piano and just start playing a songbwith or without music in front of them. I met a LOT of people like that at JoniFest. If youbve never been to Full Moon resort, the main house has an enclosed porch on the front and another on the side (the blibraryb) each with an old piano available for guests to play. At any given time, on either or both pianos, someone would be playing a Joni song (or a non-Joni song) and another person or two would be standing there singing. Outside, youbd find someone else strumming a guitar with someone else singing another song; there was this air of informality and spontaneity all around. A TV/VCR was set up at one part of the front porch and a tape with rare Canadian TV footage of Joni would be playing. On the front deck would be another group talking about music or whatever else came up. Each evening, after dinner, everyone gathered in the performance center where certain people were scheduled to perform for an allotted amount of time. Of course, there are some bprosb who have experience bplaying outb at clubs or who have produced CDbs and such. But I was amazed at the ability of many others who have relatively little experience but who do a credible job at playing or singing. Everyone who performed was wildly appreciated by the crowd. Aside from the music, I ventured into Woodstock on Saturday to check out the record and CD stores that were there; sadly, theybve all closed and disappeared. A new music store is due to open in about a week so I had to settle on attending a small flea market in town and a yard sale on the way back to the fest. I found nothing of interest in either but DID manage a good piece of pizza and some homemade raspberry ice cream. I learned of a nearby waterfall from some of the other JMDLbers and set out with Bob Sartorius to find it. We hiked down a muddy trail and were rewarded with a beautiful sight as two streams came together, flowed over a picturesque falls and then through a spillway between some rocks. Wading in the icy water of the larger stream, where it was wide and flowing more slowly, was Kay Ashley. I was so impressed that I went back again with Bob Muller and Bob Murphy. When Anita and Stephanie, from England, heard about the falls, they said theybd love to see it so on Monday morning, before we departed, I took them down to see the falls as well. There were lots of interesting mushrooms along the trail and the water was flowing dramatically from all the rain webd had. I think webre going to form the JMDLHC&NAS (Joni Mitchell Discussion List Hiking Club & Nature Appreciation Society.) Oh, did I mention the rain? I hardly noticed... I was having such a fa ntastic time. Sunday afternoon, Steve and Jeff invited folks over to their place for a bcocktail partyb before dinner. They asked us to bring some CDbs if we wanted; I introduced Jeff, Bree and Lieve to the latest Joe Jackson Band album and the most recent from Rufus Wainwright. It was great sitting and talking about all kinds of music with them. I met a great many people at this yearbs JoniFest (my first, by the way) and talked to many in depth; you know who you are... I really enjoyed the time we spent together. I would have loved to talk more with others but therebs only so much time in the course of the fest... maybe next year. For those of you interested in the t-shirts I was wearing or the writersb journal I produce, please e-mail me. And, as I mentioned to some folks, any JMDL member planning a trip to the NYC area is welcome to call me when you come up; Ibd be glad to show you around and bring you to some of my favorite restaurants and/or used record & cd stores. To those who played or sang informally around the house and grounds or in a formal presentation at the performance center: I thank you... Ibm in awe of you... I envy you! A special bthanksb to Walt who played bDown To Youb for me, on that old white piano on the front porch with the sticking keys, while I and a few others sang along and I turned the pages on the book for him. All who attended also owe special thanks to Michael Paz, a remarkable musician and singer, whobs expertise on the studio equipment in the performance center boggled my mind. To everyone who attended: I donbt care if youbre young or old, gay or straight, male or female... Hell, I wouldnbt care if youbre purple with yellow polka dots and have two heads... you folks are among the greatest people Ibve ever met! Thanks for helping to make the fest even better than Ibd anticipated.
