Yep - that's what she's saying, on the Hejira version anyway. In the Shadows & Light version she sings a verse from a blues song in her "Furry" voice. Of course, this follows the line: "But there was one song he played I could really feel" so she's adding that for the effect. This year I was a first-time fester. I joined the list circa March 2001. The first year I had already planned/used up all my vacation time before I even knew of Jonifest. The second year I made up some other phony excuses such as my wife might get aggravated about my running off to some place where I might have too much fun communing with a bunch of other people who also loved that "other woman" in my life. Finally, this year, I chucked all my excuses and decided to go. I had received the CD's of last year's fest from Bob Muller, and was very impressed with all the talent that was revealed on those tracks. And I knew about the uniformly high intelligence level of the JMDL'ers from my two + years as a lister. I didn't know exactly what to expect, but I formed what I thought was a pretty good guess about what Jonifest would be like. I missed the barn. I was simply not prepared emotionally for what I found - 65 people of different walks, backgrounds, preferences, sizes and shapes, with the common interest of Joni's music and life, coming together in a positive, supportive, loving way. Everyone rooting for everyone else, putting aside any petty differences. Pretty close to Pure. Maybe it's just me, but regular old everyday life is filled with a bunch of "stuff" - some of it interesting, some of it demanding, some of it stimulating, some of it tedious and some of it hateful - that I might classify as slightly negative or slightly positive on balance. At the end of a bad day, I might be inclined to veg out, hoping for a dose of nothingness to partially neutralize the negativity. On good days, I might have some joy on the tete a tete level - - a connection with my wife, or my family, or even on the golf course. But nothing genuine on a spiritual level with a large group of other people with a common passion. Au contrere - at the bridge tournaments I attend from time to time, the players pay lip service to the amenities: "how are your kids, etc, etc," but at the end of the night it's been Dog Eat Dog. This year I feel connected at last with my extended family. It feels really good. Everyone else connecting with everyone else, too. So, if you've never been to a Jonifest and are considering not doing so again next year, whatever your excuse (probably a lot better than mine were), please consider thinking again. You'll probably find - like me - that you've given yourself a priceless gift. I imagine there will be plenty of posts describing the details of what this year's fest was like, and thanking all of the people who extended themselves for the benefit of their Joni-family members. I'll probably post one or two later this week myself. But for today, the details might block out the principal message I am struggling to convey - as well as the glow I am feeling. We are stardust We are golden And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden......
