Good call, Craig...the acoustic piano version is far better, I think just about everyone I've ever talked to likes that one better. And if you haven't heard Chaka Khan/Chaka Khan's take on it from her live DVD, it is AWESOME! An 8-minute jazzy jam workout. The SCJoniguy says check it out...I liked it enough to put it on my "Sweet Sixteen" from last year. And jeepers - the response was so good to that disc that I've dipped back into the covers well and come up with 16 more shiny gems - "Sweet 16 - Take 2". Probably because Geffen's involved, and he loves making money. Or, it could be that the sales of these are dead and they're trying to shift some units. Or it could be that the quality of the audio was not up to snuff and they want to improve that. Could be a combination of all those things. Whatever it is I would still rather see a proper collection of just these rarities, demos, alternate takes, etc. That would rule and would move some REAL numbers. Matter of fact, my standard line is that Joni's best vocal to date is "Sweet Sucker Dance". The raps are kind of silly, but they do play into the record as a whole. And EVERYTHING about "Lindsey" is simply incredible. To me what makes the record so fascinating is to think about those melodies that Joni had to put words to. It would have been difficult to put anything to those hardcore jazz melodies, yet Joni comes up with something as brilliant as "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines". Wow. Hey, I admit I didn't get it so much when I first heard it...I was in my early 20's, into Joni but also into Southern rock and even more so at this time punk & new wave. Mingus just didn't fit into where *I* was at the time, but that's obviously no fault of the record. Picked up on it in the late 80's (after the HUGE disappointment of CMIARS, craving "new" Joni) and I love it more with each listen. And if Lama was here he'd say something about Leonard Feathers and five stars and Downbeat magazine, yadda yadda yadda. And DED's mostly OK with me. I heard her (the only time) a few weeks later on her S&L tour. A few years went by and I bought WTRF the day it came out. Sort of liked it. Years went by. A friend had DED (I didn't even know it had been released); I taped it and listened to it every day on a walkman. I dug it. Years went by. I'd completely lost track of Joni, until I found CMiaRS in the cutout bin in 1990. I loved it. Was aware that NRH was to be released; bought it (on vinyl) the day it came out, and I've been aware of her releases ever since. I don't really have a point here, except to say that I'm REALLY looking forward to the Geffen boxed set. I have virtually everything prior to WTRF on CD (and vinyl) and everyting after NRH on CD, and of the four on the Geffen set, I have only DED on CD. And I can't wait to see the written materials. Michael Hedges acknowledged a debt to Joni and, in at least one MH concert, Joni's music was played through the sound system before the show.
