I absolutely remember where I was on each first listen of every Joni album. Lori's Arizona listening story reminded me that I first heard FTR and C&S there, too, while in college. The FTR story is too personal but C&S was pretty funny. I was sprawled on the floor of my tiny dorm room (no space for an easel) trying to complete an oil painting on a 4 x 5 foot canvas. Needless to say there were spots of paint everywhere on me and otherwise. Suddenly I heard this announcement of Joni's latest album on the radio (good old KDKB FM) and then they started playing Help Me. I didn't even wait for the song to finish, promptly threw down my paint brush and walked, paint-covered, two miles in 118 degree heat to the record store to buy C&S. Came back so high I painted another 2 canvases that day! ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jul 2003 07:29:29 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Remembrances --- kakki wrote: I > didn't even wait for the song to finish, promptly > threw down my paint brush > and walked, paint-covered, two miles in 118 degree > heat to the record store > to buy C&S. Subject: Re: Counting Crows BYT Two cents worth: Counting Crows' BYT leaves me cold. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's losing the rhyme with the lyric change to "a big yellow taxi took my girl away". Rather reminds me of Sinatra singing "flying too high with some GAL in the sky" and losing the internal rhyme in "I Get A Kick Out of You". I'm a singer and I do at least my fair share of covers (and yes, in my cover of "Carey" I substitute my ukulele for JM's grand piano), but somehow I've always felt that if you have to change song lyrics to suit your gender/sexual preference, maybe you shouldn't do the song. Anyway, I do like Vanessa Carlton's "oooh-bop-bops" ... Peace, y'all. Great stuff & thanks for doing it. I'll have to listen to it again, but I always heard him sing "sway" instead of "slam", to set up the rhyme about the BYT taking his girl "away". I thought it was a pretty clever invention. Besides that, doesn't it make more sense that a girl would call for a taxi to make her exit than a guy? Yes I know this is an extremely sexist remark, but typically that would be the case. But in support of your comment, there are probably a few Joni songs that shouldn't be re-genderized. "Night Ride Home" is one that seems to adapt easily to either gender, and has been recorded multiple times by men & women. "I love the man beside me" easily switches to "I love the girl beside me" or "I love you here beside me" to make it genderless, and of course a man could sing it as is, just like Richard Isen sings "Willy" as a direct man-to-man love song and of course it works beautifully. I think the worst switch was on Willie Nelson's "Stardust" LP, the same one I referenced a day or so ago. The lyric to "Someone To Watch Over Me" has the clever couplet: "Although he may not be the man some Girls think of as handsome" And Willie sings: "Although she may not be the girl some men think of as pretty" Which of course doesn't work at all. Ironically, my second-fave song on the LP, "Moonlight In Vermont" is unique in that it doesn't contain ANY rhymes! Maybe we'd be doing the "pod people" thing lol but with all the good writers around here, I think she might enjoy it. I did not share this with her. When I've been in the presence of Joni I've rarely talked and have just listened ;-) I did tell her FTR was my favorite album and that it took me 20 years to get DJRD. She said something to the effect that she wasn't quite sure what she was doing on DJRD and some of her other music, either, and sometimes it takes her awhile to figure it out, too. I agree that I love to listen to A Case of You and Blue when I feel down, but her other songs, to me, are purely inspirational. I would hate to think I couldn't listen to her simply bc I was happy. Hi, and welcome to the list, and thanks for the intro. I think Jim was being mostly tongue-in-cheek with his comments, but I'll let him confirm that for himself. After you're around a bit you'll get a better feel for the many various folks here and their respective writing styles. Anyway, it's cool that you're picking up on Joni at 18. That's pretty much what I did, only when I was 18 it was 1975! I was given a little record album called "Hejira" and was knocked over. How did you get turned on to her? The common thread with much of Joni's material seems to be an *inner* appreciation of what she's saying or, more to the point, feeling, and that says a lot. Our cop cars used to be yellow until they realized the yellow paint contained arsenic or something (then they went with white - lead?)
