The last time Ireland saw real perfection was, apparently, the Papal visit of 1979. The journalist outlined a number of near misses between then and now including the innocent joy and jubilance of the Irish nation in 1990 as Jack Charlton brought, for the first time, an Irish soccer team into the World Cup games, and also the signing of the Good Friday agreement. I wish I had not thrown this article on the recycling heap - it was an inspired piece of writing describing how the Special Olympics 2003 allowed Irish society to have one more of those rare, infrequent moments of great perfection. The Special Olympics were taken outside of the United States of America for the first time and given a Hibernian treatment. Host towns for the visiting athletes, coaches, and families were spread around the country. The games were held in Dublin. I am quite surprised to have seen no mention of this issue on the list. The games held this country captive. For the first time since the birth of the oracle of Irish cynicism, the "Celtic Tiger", did Ireland truly deserve the title "Ireland of the Welcomes". In this year, the European Year of the Disabled Person, it is distressing, dispiriting and dismal to think that governments throughout our legion of liberalism, the European Union, have and have had to cut allowances for our respective Disabled Sector's. In the 1960's Ireland was world renowned as a place of great care. We took our children, teenagers and adults with disabilities, physical or intellectual, and gave them a great level of care and support. It has been obvious this year that many other countries now far surpass us in this regard. The recent world scale games have brought the relevant issues to the forefront of Irish politics and to the forefront of Irish emotion, and one wonders if we have really lost our previous idealism or is it just disguised, hidden? We hear about crimes and tragedies every day. When do we make time to hear about those things going and gone right? The Special Olympics went right on a massive scale; 7000 athletes, 166 countries, 30000 volunteers. The games were a success. Kudos is due to those full time carers, support workers, teachers, and family members that give of themselves everyday - those people that do not make the news as the heroes behind and beside the heroes. The events surrounding the preceding SARS scare was tragic. Our government took what were classed as precautionary steps and banned athletes from the countries on the WHO list of SARS affected countries. This provoked calls of racism and discrimination. Why were only the athletes banned? It gave the cynics one more round of ammunition. Ireland is now a country of self-styled expert cynics. We don't just drink, you know;-) Perhaps this is one of the characteristics of a country listed as one of the top twenty richest in the world? Or perhaps one can only make this list when the precursors to this cynicism can be observed at work in the country, leading the country up some ladder of prestige? At the last minute the ban was lifted. Cynicism was then overcome in a dramatic way by human triumph. Tribunals, scandals, controversy, Colin Farrell...all were forgotten for one week. The event never fell into the realm of mere sentimentality and managed to be largely free, somehow, of the grips of modern day pharisaic politics. As I came home from work on Sunday the preparations were being made in Croke Park for the closing ceremony. Nineteen official Olympic buses past me going in the opposite direction, towards the stadium. Happy faces of all ages stared out the windows and waved. Medal winners, participants, and their families waved at me, at the little woman beside me, at the people asleep in houses behind me, at everybody. Their happiness and elation were uncensored. Congratulations to all participants in the games. I noticed Lisa Marie Presley had chose Tori's 'Tear In My Hand' as one of her top ten tunes which was cool and then I saw something else. 'Joni Mitchell changed my life' was the header of a paragraph written about Patrick Wolf. He plays the Viola, Ukulele and the... accordion I think. Yeah and he was saying how much he appreciates Joni. I checked out nme.com which should of had an MP3 but couldn't find anything so I then went to his website www.patrickwolf.com. No MP3's as yet but the album is out in about less than 2 weeks. Someone mentioned that he was (is) on the list! Anyway not heard anything yet but it all sounds interesting and he's only 19 so there is hope for my generation yet! Steve T 'Juliet' by Thea Gilmore out 28th July. My friends Brian and Gene Brown were killed in that fireworks accident near Ft. Myers, Florida. I have been doing production with them for years. They have done pyro for everyone from Mickey to the Stones. It is such a sad waste and a horrible tragedy. My fondest memories of them are the 3 day camping parties they had on a farm on the northshore where people would get together and camp, play music, eat, drink, and be merry. We had some great times. Has there been any more news over there in Florida?? Jimmy?? Anyone in that area?? Please email me privately. I always hear they come I 3's, but Katherine Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Buddy Hackett (one of my faves esp. fighting the jeweled dragon in The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm), and now Brian and Gene. I tried and tried to find a picture of this photo online back when the statue in Saskatoon was being discussed & was never able to locate one. It is in a book of Liebowitz photos of women, I believe. I saw the original when the exhibition was in Seattle. It is truly a magical photo.
