The days are getting shorter and shorter for Jonifest. It's NOT too late to join us!! Just go to: http://www.jmdl.com/jonifest/register/ Here is the list of the workshops that will be offered this year to whet your appetite: FRIDAY 11:30- 1:00 PM YOGA WORKSHOP Facilitator: Zen Mistress Mags THE BARN This workshop will begin with approximately 30 minutes of yoga practice for flexibility (a la the Linda Arkin tape Ive been studying with all year). Then I'd like everyone to offer up their favourite poses; creating yoga in the round. We have so much to share and learn from each other. The session will end with a soothing relaxation pose. Please wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to practice yoga in bare feet. Feel free to bring along a yoga mat or blanket to lie down on. FRIDAY 3:00- 4:30 PM LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Facilitator: Donna Binkley THE BARN There will be a meeting in the barn for anyone who is interested in discussing the POSSIBILITY of Jonifest 2004, or future Jonifests. Please bring your ideas, a positive attitude and paper & pen. Let's do some brainstorming! SATURDAY 11:30- 1:00 PM YOGA WORKSHOP Facilitator: Zen Mistress Mags THE BARN (See Friday) SATURDAY 1:15-3:15 PM HARMONY WORKSHOP Facilitator: Jenny Goodspeed THE LIBRARY This workshop is open to all who love to sing and want to take part in recreating the beautiful harmonies of Joni's Shadows and Light. Written music will be provided, but you don't have to read music to participate. There will be a 2 hour workshop on Saturday and a quick brush up rehearsal on the afternoon of our performance at the Sunday concert! If you're dying to get up on stage, but don't want to do a solo performance, now's your chance. We need lots of voices - could especially use a couple of big boomin' basses. **Note** There will be an extra rehearsal on Sunday from 5:00-5:30 SATURDAY 3:30-5:00 PM SONGWRITING: BRINGING IT HOME Facilitator: Yael Harlap THE BARN Taking the baton from Kate and Jeff.... The creative process of songwriting & performance is an extremely vulnerable one. This workshop will provide songwriters with a safe & supportive, yet honest environment in which they can perform & receive audience feedback on a song they have written. The song can be a work in progress or one that may be considered complete. This workshop is open to anyone, whether they are a songwriter, performer or audience member. The format of the workshop is designed to allow songwriters to discover how their song is being communicated to the audience. The facilitators will guide the audience feedback through specific questions which are meant to help each songwriter discover the strengths & weaknesses of their songwriting & performance. PS It is important to the environment & integrity of this workshop that all particpants commit to arriving on time & staying the entire time... SUNDAY 11:00-12:30 PM YOGA WORKSHOP Facilitator: Zen Mistress Mags THE BARN (See Friday) SUNDAY 12:45-2:15 PM BROADWAY SHOW TUNES: Facilitator: Roberto Holliston THE LIBRARY This informal workshop will focus on the music of Broadway shows. I envision an old-fashioned around-the-piano singalong. I'll be taking requests from participants as well as bring along some old favourites such as Pippin and All That Jazz with a view to possibly performing on stage one evening. SUNDAY 2:30- 4:00 PM EMBRACING THE ABSURD- KAZOO WORKSHOP Facilitator: Kay Ashley THE BARN In this workshop we will master the mysterious kazoo, an esoteric instrument whose true potential has been explored only by a brave and misguided few. Harmonized arrangements of classic Joni and Led Zeppelin songs will be attempted. Kazoos will be provided. SUNDAY 4:15- 5:15 PM DULCIMER WORKSHOP/SONGSWAP Facilitator: Chuck Eisenhardt THE BARN This workshop is intended for both general audience with an interest in Mountain dulcimer, as well as players. Topics will include: history, modes and scales, strings and tuning, Joni tuning and lore, playing with guitar and chromatic instruments, and resources for learning/building/playing. We will demonstrate/swap the Joni dulcimer songs. If you have a dulcimer, bring it! If you know Joni dulcimer songs, you'll likely be pressed into duty. SUNDAY 5:15- 5:45 PM Extra rehearsal for the Harmony Workshop Group THE LIBRARY ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jun 2003 22:17:06 EDT From: Bobsart48@aol.com Subject: Re: the art of songwriting, via Britney Spears LJC In a message dated 6/28/03 5:10:24 PM Eastern Daylight Time, SCJoniGuy writes: > Well, obviously I didn't consider my list complete...but again Elton is in > a bit of a different niche. I am not sure I know what to make of it. Could you elucidate a bit more, Bob ? As far as the 2-3 minute pop ditty concept goes, didn't the average song length stretch out a bit over time, with 2-3 minutes being more 50's and early-mid 60's, trending up gradually after that ? So the song length is something of a function of the times. That's just my impression, so I could be all wet on that. In any event, am I to deduce that you feel that the Beatles and Elton John are in substantially different categories for purposes of this commentary ('cause I have them in the same camp in my mind) ? For example, Both were mostly "album" artists, no ? To recall the Beatles, I would offer Rubber Soul, Revolver, Abby Road, and Sgt. Pepper's as 4 classic Beatles albums with a pretty low ratio of hits/ artistic merit - would you agree ? Both had great success with hit singles, too. If you think Elton does not know that, may I offer you the set list to his October 2000 DVD "One Night Only - The Greatest Hits" ? 1. Funeral For A Friend (Love Lies Bleeding) 2. Candle In The Wind 3. Bennie And The Jets 4. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (w/Billy Joel) 5. Someone Saved My Life Tonight 6. Little Jeannie 7. Philadelphia Freedom 8. Tiny Dancer 9. Can You Feel The Love Tonight? 10. Daniel 11. Rocket Man 12. Club At The End Of The Street 13. Blue Eyes 14. I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues (w/Mary J. Blige) 15. The One 16. I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That 17. Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word 18. Sacrifice 19. Come Together 20. Your Song (w/Ronan Keating) 21. Sad Songs (Say So Much) (w/Bryan Adams) 22. I'm Still Standing 23. Crocodile Rock 24. Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) (w/Anastacia) 25. The Bitch Is Back 26. Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me 27. Don't Go Breaking My Heart (w/Kiki Dee) 28. Bonus track - "I Want Love" video w/ Robert Downey Jr. Pretty extensive set list of 'hits', IMO, though the sound quality is somewhat limited by the venue (MSG - not exactly Carnegie Hall - which apparently is what the NY Philharmonic thinks about Avery Fisher Hall, too). I wonder how these did as singles ? Oh - I believe that he has some other hits, too, that somehow did not make the set list. For example, Honky Cat, Border Song, Believe and I'm sure there may be more....;-) I guess what I was saying is that Elton John is a lot more like Lennon/McCartney than like Joni Mitchell. And I think Britney Spears would say that it is a lot harder to do what Elton and the Beatles did than what Joni did ;-) Bobsart (somehow feeling we are pretty much on the same page on this topic) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jun 2003 23:51:24 EDT From: Ckelly3@aol.com Subject: New to the list..
