Does Joni make *anything* at all from the sales of her albums? In comments she has made about the recording industry, it almost sounds like she is still paying back for the rental of the synthesizers on DED. Just curious. I'll bet Joni has sold large numbers of her earlier stuff on CD (some to people who already had the vinyl, some who didn't). It would be fascinating to know in general all the information about her album sales (the rates at which they've sold, the breakdown of total CD's vs. LP's of the same album); I'd like to see graphs of each album's instantaneous sales between its release date and the present. Is it public information? Do labels protect this information? Do they lie about sales (to avoid paying royalties)? If anyone can direct me to this information, I could compile it all and publish it on the web somewhere. I read somewhere that STAS went gold after a while even though it didn't debut so well. Also I get a feeling that BLUE has sold the most copies over all. (I'm too cheap to order cable myself), and I caught the tail end of a show on the Discovery Channel. It was a design/decorating show - I think it was called "Design by Surprise." They were designing a room into a music room, making lamps out of saxophones, window shades with music notes, etc.etc....... They also took some record album covers and framed them. One of the album covers was our beloved "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter." I was pretty excited to see this! Other framed album covers were from artists like Bruce Springsteen, The Police, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton. I think, before Soundscan, the numbers were kept by the record company-sort of the fox guarding the henhouse. I think you have to have an industry "in" to get Soundscan numbers. > Does Joni make *anything* at all from the sales of her albums? At some point Brenda Walker, who has been off list now for some time, posted Joni's total sales-though I no longer have that post. She also said that Joni's sales around that time for all her albums ("catalog") was roughly 14,000 copies/week. Typically, an artist will get 1 dollar per unit sold (or $56,000/month from just that). Although she would have to pay back the advance the record company lent her to record the album, and bigger bucks yet for the DED era when they were making videos. I know her more recent orchestral releases were self-funded (no doubt at a loss). Also add in publishing income for each unit sold (another 75 cents or so?). Brenda also said: The greater portion of her wealth would have come from those songs being played on the radio, on television, in movies etc. Mechanical royalties from record sales are a pittance compared to that. Both Sides Now has had 4 million performances. Big Yellow Taxi has had 1 million performances. Help Me has had 1 million performances. Woodstock has had 1 million performances. Together these total the same amount as the most performed BMI song ever - - "You've Lost That Loving Feeling". Holland/Dozier/Holland, Paul Simon, Elton John and the Eagles are probably the only other BMI writers besides the Beatles who surpass her in broadcast performances. Wasn't there some deal with the Fairlight where you had to give them a slice of the royalties, too?
