It figures since I love both of these artists so much. My friend Russ let me xerox a pre-Ladies of the Canyon songbook from Sicquomb about eight years ago, which had the sheet music to Songs for a Seagull, Clouds, and "Poor Sad Baby," "Moon on the Mirror [sic?]," "Carnival in Kenora," and four others that are unreleased. I still have the copies somewhere... But even more interesting is a poem or lyric that has no music called THE FISHBOWL (it has the typical copyright information at the bottom and is dated 1969). This EXISTS but I can not find it (it has been separated from my copies of those songs, and I have not seen it mentioned on Joni Mitchell.com.) Anyone have or know of this? If not, I will try to go through my boxes of stuff to find it, I know I have it someplace. [IMAGE] From what I remember, the song has a similar theme to The Arrangement, For the Roses and so on. Also, Fairport Convention's second album, What We Did On Our Holidays, has been re-released in England as part of the Island re-masters series. Besides being my favorite album by a band, (not single performer) it has the only recording of Joni's song Eastern Rain available right now. They do not use the chorus, only the verses, but it is quite beautiful, with the late Sandy Denny and Ian "UK Woodstock" Matthews on vocals and Richard Thompson on lead guitar! It is the reason I bought this album in the first place (along with Tom Rush' The Circle Game, with its version of Urge for Going). Their producer, Joe Boyd, is the one who tried to get Joni a music deal in England, I think it was Essex, or Winchester, or something, Music, and Joni played shows with Fairport, Nick Drake and others! I was surprised to hear that the poem had ever been published. It's mentioned in Karen O'Brien's book Shadows And Light p.30 and also in this interview: Doug From the JMDL archive. Mojo, Aug. 1998 interview http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=195 It's become like movie stars. I wrote a poem when I was 16. Having written this poem, why am I in this business? But we had to write a poem, right? It was supposed to be blank verse. So I was getting my hair done for some kind of prom deal, because that's the only time we'd go to the beauty parlour in those days. And I was sitting under the dryer, and they had stacks of movie star magazines. The reigning deities, the teenage idols at that time, were Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin, who were newly married. So the tabloids were full of the misadventures of their marriage. And I just felt so bad for them. And I remember thinking to myself, If somebody wrote this about me in the school paper, I would just die. So that's what triggered this poem that had to be turned in for assignment. It was called The Fishbowl: The Fishbowl is a world reversed Where fishermen with hooks That dangle from the bottom up Reel down their catch without a fight Pike, pickerel bass, the common fish Ogle through distorting glass See only glitter, glamour, gaiety Fog up the bowl with lusty breath Lunge towards the bait and miss And weep for fortunes lost Envy the goldfish? Why? His bubbles breaking 'round the rim While silly fishes faint for him And say, "Look there! I think he winked his eye at me." From Patti (on the Shawn Colvin List) comes this tidbit: "I went to see Seal here in Toronto, and walking into the ampitheatre right next to me was Joni Mitchell. She is beautiful ! I almost thought it wasn't her because she looked too young, but it is hard to mistake her distinctive features. I stayed cool and opted not to approach her. About halfway through the concert I went to get a drink, and I walked right by her. So much for being cool ! I could not resist talking to her - I am a huge fan, and she is such an icon !
