Sharon (Bell, I think?) was (is?) a friend of Joni's going back to when they were teenagers, maybe even before that. The song certainly has a hypnotic quality with its densely packed lyrics interspersed with a relatively simple melodic line (though, as you say, there are subtle changes in the guitar bits throughout). It's very stream-of-consciousness (but s-o-c that makes sense, LOL!) ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2003 07:42:55 EDT From: MINGSDANCE@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni's Gutiar on e-bay Hi Paul, I am responding to your e-mail. It is so great to see something of Joni's on ebay. However a vast majority of her truly devoted fans, who have hung on to every word-cord-note that comes out of her and "Who Get Her," are not wealthy people. If these instruments should go to auction, then so be it. However, I feel that perhaps one of her guitars should be used charitably. Maybe there is a special needs situation being experienced by one of Joni's extraordinary fans which could be fulfilled with the money a particular guitar would bring. Or it could be donated directly to a charity, such as "Make A. Wish Foundation" or "AMFAR". Such a donation could yield a tax deduction of an amount declared by the donee, and of course, Joni would probably think that this use of such funds was pretty cool. I've had the great fortune of meeting her at her "Voices" opening at the Mendal. I was able to attend that event because of the generous gift of airline tickets from a client. He knew of my love for Joni. He also knew that I had just completed the last job of my landscaping career because my struggle with AIDS was becoming complicated. So, at a cost of $3,700 he sent my lover and I tickets to Saskatoon. What a true gift of compassion. Sort of a "Make a Wish" for adults! I got to visit with Joni several times throughout the event. I told her of my illness and that I listened to her music every day, and it had become a healing therapy for me -- kind of my "Mantra" to good health. She was so sweet and kind, and made me feel a personal connection that thrills me to this day. I've photographed two of her concerts for "jonimitchell.com" site (11/07/98 and 05/17/00). Because of her inspiration, I feel that I continue to be accomplished even though I am unable to "work". Maybe this guitar could bring the same riches to someone in need. Please know that your sensitivity toward Joni's faithful fans is greatly appreciated. Thank you for allowing me my input. Have a great day! It is extremely playable. Yes, it is worn and corroded because it's 25 years old and Joni played it on tours. It's also been thoroughly maintained by Fred Walecki's Westwood Music, which has been repairing fine instruments since the 1920s. Peter Carney, who bought one of Joni's sunburst Ibanez guitars in February, plays his regularly. 2. It is extremely valuable and collectible because it's so well-used and because Joni played it in so many photos and videos. We've actually sold some of her guitars through major auction houses in the past to dealers at pretty high rates. I also received offers from dealers to take it off of eBay. Some of these offers were above the reserve. Fred was adamant that we leave it up. 3. It deserves to go to a fan. Yes, clearly, it's expensive. But, apart from handwritten lyrics, paintings and Joni's legendary "beloved" Martin--none of which I have, let me hasten to add!--there aren't many objects that are the focus of so much of Joni's creativity and passion. Far better that it end up in the home of someone who loves Joni than in the collection of someone waiting for a windfall. The question is, should I put it back up? Is there enough interest in Joni's concert guitars to put them offer them on eBay or should we just go back to the auction houses? - - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paul D. Since Hejira remains my favorite record by anyone ever, and SfS one of my fave songs on it, I feel drawn to respond. >Now I wonder who Joni's 'Sharon' is. Sharon Bell was her name, a childhood playmate of Joni's. (When we were kids in Maidstone Sharon...) She later married & her name changed to Sharon Veer. >The lyrics sound as though Joni is telling Sharon something, >and taking awhile to get to the point (as we all do when it's >a painful subject). The end of a relationship, interspersed >with scenes from New York as she (Joni, the singer) is trying >to deal with it and talk about it. That's an interesting question, Chrys...SfS has many subtexts, but not as easy to put in a nutshell. I would be tempted to say that it's either a real or imagined conversation between two childhood friends, talking to each other as adults many years later, and re-capping their childhood dreams and secrets they shared with each other & comparing & contrasting that with what actually happened to them. In this case the irony was that Joan wanted a family and a farm, (or so she believed), and Sharon wanted to be a singer. As life turned out, the reverse is what actually happened, and both Sharon & Joni, while satisfied & fulfilled with their results, still felt a tug in regards to that childhood dream. (Sharon Veer would go on to record an LP with a cover of "Both Sides Now" on it...and the name of the LP is "Yesterday's Dreams", coincidentally enough). >The last line is a study in contrasts. Sharon has settled >down, and Joni hasn't. She still has her "eyes on the land >and the sky." I wonder if she realises how Mongolian that >phrase is. What do you mean "Mongolian"? Like the title track, it's hard to single out a singular superb lyric in SfS, because it simply goes from one to another. While I feel like this song is in my blood, I also know that I still have much to learn about it & from it. After her divorce in 1967 she went to New York, planing a career in design and clothing, but her success as a folksinger on the New York folk circuit exposed her as a strong songwriter and engaging live performer. Mitchell was discovered by Elliott Roberts and shortly afterwards by David Crosby with whom she became lovers. They produced her startling debut album "Songs to a seagull", showing her early folk influence and strong lyrical talent. Apart from her skills as a writer, she was a fine singer and imiginative guitarist with a love of open tuning. Using now also the piano, the music gradually began to sound less sparse and the lyrics became more ambitious, portraying the hippie audience as searchers for some lost Edenic bliss ("We are stardust, we are golden..." from the wellknown song "Woodstock") The extend of Joni's commercial acceptance was demosntrated on the humouous "Big Yellow Taxi", a sardonic comment on the urban disregard for ecology, wich became a top 20 hit. In the following years she delivered several albums, shifting from folk to rock and also using kazz-rhythms. The sweeping "Help Me" climbed to number 7 in the US charts in 1974. The move into the jazz territory continued throughout 1978-79, culminating in her collaboration with Charlie Mingus. She continued to release till finally in the 90s, Mitchell indicated her intention to pursue a career in painting, exhibitions of her 80s canvases having been held in London and Edingburgh. Still regarded as one of the fines singer/songwriters of her generation, Mitchell has displayed more artistic depths and consistency than most of her illustrious contemporaries from the 70s. The creativily quit decade that followed has done little to detract from her importance and she remains one of popular music's most articulate and keen voices Adapted from The Guinness Encyclopedia of popular music copyright Square One Books Ltd. & Guinness Publishing 1995" I tried not to add more mispellings to original text on disc.
