Meera Syal was on today - for those who don't know, she's something of a national treasure on the UK, being one of the most well-known Asian (Punjabi Hindu in her case) women in the country as well as one of our best-loved TV actors and writers. She's written groundbreaking shows like Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars at Number 42, novels like Anita & Me and film scripts like Bhaji On The Beach. Anyway, one of her choices was by a Canadian artist we all know and love. Quoth Meera: "Joni Mitchell was really important to me when I was a student." She went on to say how much she admired our Joan, and the song she chose was ... A Case Of You. Top woman! Again, anyone wanting to hear the programme can hear it on the BBC's website (www.bbc.co.uk, then search around and you'll find it). Summer's here, and the time is right...for another CD's worth of jammin' Joni covers! Like I said last month, life begins at 40, and I really like all of these latest volumes. Like a fine wine, and like most of us, it's getting better with age. So without further ado, let's dive in, shall we? Thanks to these fine folks that helped me gather up this month's harvest: Doug Cox Joe Farrell Scott Merrell And now...on to the music: 1. Joe Milsom - River: A nice, simple acoustic-guitar-almost country take on River. 2. Ronan Tynan - Both Sides Now: Tynan is a pysician, a champion disabled athlete, and one of the "Three Irish Tenors". If you don't know his story, check it out, it's pretty inspirational. He certainly has a strong clear voice even though it may not be MY cup of tea. 3. Blue Tapestry - Raised On Robbery 4. Blue Tapestry - A Case Of You: Two more outstanding selections from the "Blue Tapestry" CD. Raised on Robbery in particular is a smoker & goes WAY beyond being a tribute. 5. Erinn Brown - Urge For Going: Wow-eee! Talk about putting a new stamp on an old favorite...Erinn and her band put a nice slow-funk rock spin on UFG that makes it sound like it was just written yesterday. 6. The Pattersons - Both Sides Now: An Irish folk group from the 60's, how could they resist adding BSN to their catalogue, and they sound OK...nice pace & harmonies. 7. Beth Neilsen Chapman - You Turn Me On I'm A Radio: A b-side on a cd-single, this is a very close likeness of Joni's recording, Beth's got a nice Shawn-like voice and guitar style...what's not to like? 8. Jim Wilson - River 9. Jim Wilson - River (Radio Mix): From his 2002 Christmas CD, a pleasant jazz-like easy listening version...the "radio mix" features Everette Harp on additional saxophone. 10. The BB Band - Woodstock: The BB Band is one of those ripoff groups that get together and tries to copy as closely as possible somebody else's hit. Here they tackle CSNY's version of Woodstock. 11. Tony Jacklin - Both Sides Now: Tony was a PGA golfer, and decided to record an album of contemporary music to prove how hip he was. Not the worst BSN I've ever heard, but plenty cheesy and I'm sure his family is deliriously delighted that he chose a career in sport rather than music. 12. Travels With Charley - Carey: A very rare & obscure recording, I can't believe that I finally located it. Features lots of slide guitar & fine pickin'. 13. Jeff Beck - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: I know, I know...it's not REALLY a "Joni cover"...it was recorded way before Joni added her lyrics to the Mingus melody. Still, it's a lot of fun to hear Jeff's rock-jazz-jam take on it. 14. Laird Jackson - Tin Angel: When you think of the Joni songs that translate into a jazz style, Tin Angel is not one that comes to mind. Not to me anyway...but that's what makes it so interesting. A very unique, laid-back, mellow version of Joni's simple-yet-complicated song. 15. Sandler & Young: Both Sides Now: If you spent your Sunday nights watching Ed Sullivan, then the names Sandler & Young will not be foreign to you. They don't do any French on this recording, just a straight-up duet. 16. Avalon Motel - Blue: A GORGEOUS version from this Canadian Jazz band, definitely one of my favorites. Of course it helps that the song is so excellent too! 17. Counting Crows w/Vanessa Carlton - Big Yellow Taxi: Vanessa chimes in and adds some poppish backing vocals...I like both versions, some interesting harmonies at the end. 18. The Stanford University Marching Band - Woodstock: Any Stanford alumni out there? Well, your marching band has done 'ya proud! This is definitely NOT the CSNY version...I can just see them marching in formation! 19. Marion Montgomery & Richard Rodney Bennett - Chelsea Morning (medley): A nice closer to #41, a playful combination of "Just a Little Lovin', Chelsea Morning, & "I Hear Music". Both Richard & Marion toss in vocals and Bennett adds the cabaret-style piano. Big thanks to Scott Merrell for digging up this one; very hard-to-find! There you have it...19 tracks, one CD bursting at the seams with Joni covers! Stay tuned to find out how you can scam a free copy. On saturday in the Hamilton spec (thespec.com) they started a story with "In her tune Big Yellow Taxi, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell wrote, "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."" That's the plan, to pave on the edge of Cootes Paradise and turn it into a 565-car parking lot, and that area's a nesting ground for turtles, too. I hope the proposal gets turned down quickly, but seeing how the city says they're going to start construction on the Red Hill Expressway this fall, I'm not so sure. On that subject there is a petition on the Friends of Red Hill website http://www.hwcn.org/link/forhv/home/mainpage.htm saying "We believe that Hamilton can not afford the Red Hill Creek Expressway.", which it really can't - it will cost $700 an inch, plus maintenance, and by 2007 Hamilton will have a debt of $536 million, which is over $1350 per person. Also, as many as 47 000 trees will be cut down, destroying wildlife habitats, overall it's a horrible idea, and the expressway's not at all needed - much more info on their site. I urge you to add your name to the petition. It seems aimed at Canadians, as one of the fields is province, but I wouldn't worry about that, need all the names we can get. It is extremely playable. Yes, it is worn and corroded because it's 25 years old and Joni played it on tours. It's also been thoroughly maintained by Fred Walecki's Westwood Music, which has been repairing fine instruments since the 1920s. Peter Carney, who bought one of Joni's sunburst Ibanez guitars in February, plays his regularly. 2. It is extremely valuable and collectible because it's so well-used and because Joni played it in so many photos and videos. We've actually sold some of her guitars through major auction houses in the past to dealers at pretty high rates. I also received offers from dealers to take it off of eBay. Some of these offers were above the reserve. Fred was adamant that we leave it up. 3. It deserves to go to a fan. Yes, clearly, it's expensive. But, apart from handwritten lyrics, paintings and Joni's legendary "beloved" Martin--none of which I have, let me hasten to add!--there aren't many objects that are the focus of so much of Joni's creativity and passion. Far better that it end up in the home of someone who loves Joni than in the collection of someone waiting for a windfall. The question is, should I put it back up? Is there enough interest in Joni's concert guitars to put them offer them on eBay or should we just go back to the auction houses? - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paul D. I think Joni `would love it. peace, david Here's a companion activity to lyric parodies -- Joni lounge-singing. A friend and I did it once at a party -- others present thought we were nuts, but we loved it. Joni lounge-singing is pretty easy to do, just pick some songs and sing them in your best Bill Murray lounge singer style. Sire of Sorrow and other really serious ones are especially fun to do.
