Courtesy of Casey, today I received the perma-vine cd of the Joni/James BBC concert... so now the perma-vine is here in Italy. My copy is made and one also for the burnerless soul, who would like to be the next on the vine? Just email me privately (I am on digests) and it's yours. PERMA-VINE RULES: 1) When you receive your Perma-Vine disc you must MAKE COPIES FOR YOURSELF and re-post an offer on JMDL. You will forward the ORIGINAL DISC onto the next recipient (you may NOT keep the original Perma-Vine disc). This method ensures that all participants can get a clean, glitch-free copy of this show directly off the original disc. 2) You must re-post your offer of this vine only to JMDL. If, after two postings within 48 hours, there is no response, you may then, and only then, post the Perma-Vine offer to another group, but you MUST post an announcement to JMDL indicating which group you have transferred this Perma-Vine to. 3) By requesting these Perma-Vine discs, you have agreed to make this show available to those who are unable to burn copies for themselves (and, thus, cannot participate directly in this Perma-Vine). You agree to post an offer(s) on JMDL for at least one burnerless individual as soon as you have forwarded the original Perma-Vine disc onto the next recipient. You may B+P or trade this to as many as you like AFTER you have forwarded the Perma-Vine discs onto the next recipient. 4) You further agree to keep the Perma-Vine disc in your possession no longer than 72 hours before re-offering. 5) Lastly, you agree to ENJOY this music immensely! Here is the track information: 1) That Song About the Midway Joni 2) The Gallery Joni 3) Rainy Day Man James 4) Steamroller Blues James 5) The Priest Joni 6) Carey Joni 7) Carolina in My Mind James 8) California Joni + James 9) For Free Joni + James 10) The Circle Game Joni + James 11) You Can Close Your Eyes Joni + James 12) Hunter Joni 13) River Joni 14) My Old Man Joni 15) A Case of You Joni 16) Carey (unedited intro) Joni Adriano ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 08:43:15 EDT From: CDTraderJohn@aol.com Subject: Re: perma-vine (gap) problem To Emily (and anyone else who runs into this problem), You can omit the gaps between tracks on your copies by selecting DAO (Disc-At-Once) recording rather than TAO (Track-At-Once). These guys eventually sell the autographs on e-Bay or at special collector conventions. They make a living at it. The cameras followed Brad as he tried to get autographs from such celebs as Michael Jordan and Harvey Keitel (both of whom refused constantly). Joni was in town to get her name on the Walk of Fame, along with Margaret Atwood. Joni and Kilauren are seen getting out of a limo before the ceremony. Brad approaches with a guitar he'd like Joni to sign. Joni, gracious at first, senses that he's not a true fan and says "Sorry, I don't do mercenary." Brad waits in the crowd while the ceremony is filmed from the back of the crowd. There's a shot of Joni and Atwood putting their hands on the Walk of Fame slabs. Brad is still smarting at being called 'mercenary' but agrees that he is in it for the money. He can get at least $900 for the guitar -- if Joni signs it. Joni's true fans tell the camera that these hounds spoil it for the real fans, who often don't get the autograph. Another shot of Joni et al. leaving the site. Still no autograph. Brad bribes a limo driver to tell him where Joni and Atwood are having lunch. Just a few blocks away, it turns out. So he runs over and waits in front of the restaurant. Eventually, the two grande dames come out. (Atwood, by the way, is walking just a little wobbly!). Brad strikes again. Joni, gracious and funny throughout it all, says that she used to give out autographs all the time but doesn't anymore. She says she realizes he has to make a living, but it all seems so 'jackal-esque'. Now there's a Joni-ism if I ever heard one. Eventually, she relents and signs his guitar with the waterproof marker. Not satisfied, Brad persists: 'Could you put the date on?' She writes '2001'. Then he asks her to draw a picture of a big yellow taxi. 'That's my favourite song,' he lies. Joni balks at that, but draws a couple of eyes at the top of the guitar body instead and leaves. BTW: the Joni segments were interspersed throughout the hour. Brad eventually went on to score an autograph from the notoriously ungenerous Paul McCartney at the airport, using a little boy as a lure. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 09:35:11 EDT From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Re: Autograph Hounds In a message dated 5/27/03 9:07:27 AM Eastern Daylight Time, jamesl@ca.inter.net writes: > This documentary, called Hounds, followed an autograph 'merchant' named > Brad > around Toronto in the fall of 2001. I am in Vancouver, and don't have too much time for e-mail, so I was grateful for your wonderful explanation of the show. I will just add that I don't think Joni has a huge problem for signing for fans. (Many of us have found that out already.) But she has a problem with these guys who are doing it for a living. Also, when she did finally break down and sign the guitar, she was SO gracious, even to this "jackal-esque" guy, Brad. As James said, she signed, gave him the pen back, then he asked for a date, she took the pen back, dated the guitar, gave the pen back yet again, and he pushed for a picture, and she accomodated him *again.* All this for something she doesn't believe in. I've seen it happen on Gibsons as recent as from the 70's. Toxic fumes corrode all metal parts, especially when closed in a case. Hence the corrosion of the pickups is heavier near the pickguard. The pickguard will have to be thrown away before it does more damage and it will eventually turn into dust (just like the rest of us). I'll wager a guess and say it's instinct. When a guy rushes up to you and has that "it's about business" look in his eyes (like, "Just sign the goddamn thing, woman!") I'm sure Joni can spot it a mile away. It's so opposite to what a genuine fan would do. I know I would not only be humbled in her presence but that I would feel almost too shy to ask her to sign anything. My primary motive would be to share my thoughts with her about how her music affected me on such a deep level, as is the case with most fans, I'm sure. This guy had none of the grace or the humility. It was all about the signature. I actually wish Joni had told him to get a real job, which is what she was probably thinking. - -Andrew __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? In the U.S. it is being sold for horrendously inflated prices - $220 on E-bay and $200 at amazon - because it is printed in Canada and is not shipped there for sale. Let me just say that it is NOT worth that much! It's only 61 pages and a fair number of the paintings have been seen in her album artwork. If you go to amazon.ca (the Canadian contingent of amazon.com) you can purchase it there for under $30. They DO deliver to the U.S.! Actually, with the exchange rate, you will pay less than the quoted price because the Canadian dollar is worth less than the U.S. dollar. This virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by messenger and the address book, whether or not you send emails to your contacts. Here's how to check for the virus and get rid of it. It is very simple to do. PLEASE DO IT RIGHT NOW SO AS TO NOT ENDANGER YOUR SYSTEM. 1. Go to Start, Find, or Search option. 2. In the file/folders option, type the name: jdbgmgr.exe 3. Be sure to search your C drive and all subfolders and any other drives you may have. 4. Click: "Find Now". 5. Go to the recycle bin and DELETE it there as well. If you find the virus, you must contact all the people in your address book so they can eradicate it from their own address books. To do this: A. Open a new email message. B. Click the icon of the address book next to the "TO" C. Either go to the website he suggested or another one is http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html A virus hoax can do just as much damage as a real virus. You'll end up deleting files from your computer that you *need*, and your computer may crash. Everyone should bookmark one of the above sites to determine if the so called virus is a hoax. So, don't believe your best friend when they tell you there might be a virus. Check it out for yourself, before you spread nasty rumors, even though your intentions are good. She's the only songwriter I know to use words like incendiary, unscrupulous and unfettered, or name artists like Rousseau, Van Gogh, Botticelli and Fellini in her songs. And how about "Hejira" - what a word! Running away with honour, with ties to Mecca and leaving a dream without blame. Stunning. I thought the phrase "ruddy darter" was pretty "Joni-ish" and even "brilliant red" - of course arbutus rang a bell or two as well! I've said this before, but I love the way Joni uses words different than the norm, like she's thinks "that's too boring, what other more obscure word(s) could I use?" The one that jumped out at me was the word "keloids" instead of "scars" from Talk To Me: "It still gets my feet up to dance, even though it's covered with keloids, from the slings and arrows of outrageous romance." The author of my favourite book (the bone people by Keri Hulme) talks about the way words look and feel - for example, she says "bluegreen" conveys a different meaning to "blue-green", and I definitely agree. Even "okay" is slightly different to "OK".
