["kakki" Subject: Re: Wall to Wall Joni Mitchell recordings I enjoyed a lot of what I heard at Wall to Wall, but I agree with Kenny B that I have trouble appreciating "covers" that them to deconstruct all the notes and put them together in a completely different sequence! The Wall to Wall version of The Jungle Line fit into that category IMO, and I didn't get anything out of it. On the other hand, I like when artists attempt new interpretations of a song, as long as they respect the integrity of the original. I really liked the Klezmer instrumental version of Fiddle and the Drum, and the jazz versions of Tax Free and Ethiopia made me appreciate those two songs for the first time. Griskavich" Subject: Perma-Vine progress Dear Everyone, I made several copies of the perma-vine disc yesterday. One for my dad, one for my friend who just graduated from college, one for myself, and one for a burnerless recipient. However, I had to remove one song from the mix of these CDs because my burner puts a few seconds between each song. I tried to remove the shorter version of "Carey" from the mix, but on the copy for the burnerless recipient, I accidentally omitted "The Priest." I will make a new copy of the disc with "The Priest" in and the shorter "Carey" out. If anybody w/o a burner would like a copy and doesn't like "The Priest," I can send you that one. I like "Carey" and I sent the lyrics to my friend Cary, who lives in another state. I'd have to say my favorites would be "River" and "For Free." If you'd like a copy, please send me an address and whether you want the original, the regular burnerless copy, or the "Priest"-free copy. Combine the dead-on harmonies of The Roches with the quirky lyrics of Barenaked Ladies with the instrumental diversity of Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks... and you've only just begun to scratch the surface of this group's repertoire - they rock, they folk and I highly recommend you visit www.mpeband.com to see if they're coming to a venue near you! On their fourth album, FOR (inspired by the music and life of Jeff Buckley), MPE sings a beautiful original composition that's perfect for inclusion in the Songs That Mention Joni... or mention one of her songs (Songs That Mention Joni) - I've cc:ed my post to Simon as well, and look forward to having them included on the page (thanks, Simon!). This was a live recording of the performance she did at the "Wall to Wall" show in NYC. I was not impressed with her vocal at all, although her piano accompanist was VERY strong. You can go to the covers section of the JMDL site (Joni Undercover) and do a search on any of the song titles there to see who has covered "Down To You". You'll find the following: Lydia van Dam Colloseum II I love both of these recordings; the former is a very loose and pretty jazz version, the latter a prog-rock version that's really unique and one that I'm sure YOU would not like, based on what you've stated about Joni covers that are 'out there'. Do you still have the tapes you made of the Wall to Wall? I'd love to have them to dub to cd and add to what we've got already. I'll return them to you of course... I was kind of perplexed as to why this guitar (Ibanez electric #2, blond-the one she used for her stage guitar-and I believe this is the same one from the Shadows and Light video) has so much corrosion on the pickups and other metal parts, I mean they are melting away! I've got electrics that are older than this with barely any corrosion like that. Did she tie it to the mast of Crosby's sailboat for five years? Toxic sweat? Stored in a hydroclauric acid factory?
