It's hard to have a least favorite Joni album, there's always something that I like about most of them. Except, now that I think about it, Turbulent Indigo, but that's mostly a hearing thing for me. It seems that her singing gets lost in the sauce. The DED thread is timely, too, because I am thinking of using "Lucky Girl" for my walk down the aisle song next month. The only thing that is making me hesitate is that some of the lyrics seem disrespectful of men. From that perspective, how appropriate is that for a wedding "march?" Do youse guys have any thoughts on that or can you recommend any other appropriate Joni songs? I thought about "Love" but the darkness of it has me avoiding it. (On the other hand, since there'll be an open bar outside the chapel before the ceremony, who the heck is going to notice?!?!) It's been hard for me to locate a Joni love song that is truly upbeat. There are those that celebrate love but always with a dismal edge. Or so it seems to me. Whaddaya think? In the "Other Things" Department: 1. Joni's Travelogue was listed as on the of "Top Ten Worst CDs" to own by a magazine that the MTV Store in NY was giving away last month with every purchase over $25. (whattadealdoya get in the big city, eh?). Oh boy, I can't remember the name and I hung onto it for weeks thinking I'd post it to the list because their commentary was interesting. Now, of course, I can't find it for beans. Oh well. 2. Jackson Browne is going to be on the Simpson's on Sunday!!! 3. Jackson Browne is going to be playing at the Concord Pavilion on July 27th. Tickets go on sale May 18th. If any list members are planning to attend, please email me off list. He's also playing at the Aladdin in Las Vegas on July 27th and I'm thinking of hitting that show, too. 4. I'm not a movier goer because I need close captioning but I saw "Identity" last night. (and last month, too, but before the movie I took 4 advil as a preventative tool to head off any wine/champagne headaches. Unfortunately, it turned out that my Mom put "advil/sleep aids" bottle in my bag and I snoozed through several crucial scenes.) Now it wasn't the best movie ever but it was very thought provoking in terms of reality, who we are, who we perceive ourselves to be and things like that. I highly recommend it. 5. Joni Fest: having been to several, I can strongly say that it's worth the time and expensive. I noticed that Lama carefully left out the "leaving MG high and dry in the hotel lobby in Pittsburgh" part of the first Joni Fest hosted by Julie Z. Webb but I won't bring that up. For myself, this is the year of the wedding so I have to pass on it. But if you can swing it, do it. Really. Anything else? Checking through pockets.......nope....just belly button lint. I was watching the informercial for the Ultimate 70's collection when I heard sweet Joni singing Help Me. The notes about the 74 collection say this: Ultimate Seventies: 1974 Hey kids, shake it loose together was the call to action by Elton John in the #1 hit Bennie And The Jets. Pick up that and Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama, Joni Mitchell's Help Me, Eric Clapton's I Shot The Sheriff, and 14 more! While I have never been inclined to buy something like this I must say that this is the first time I can recall Joni ever being included in a Time-Life collection. Any comments? Sue n.p. They are not the sweet, blind recollections of perfect, long-lasting love but are viewed by Joan in a bit of a half light. She wants to love. She loves her loving! But not like she loves her freedom. There is always that element of darkness in her "love songs" that is unique to her brand of songwriting, I think. No other song writer has dealt with love in such 'REAL' terms. Some write about the glory of love while others write about the pain when it goes, but Joni articulates every single emotion or feeling that accompanies the process of love, from beginning to end: "This feels good; Is it right for me? This is wonderful! Am I losing myself? I love him! Does he love me back? He loves me! I hate him some. I am in love! Does he really understand me?" And so on, and so on.... She looks at love with such an unwavering, penetrating gaze - the good and the bad of it. That's personally why I love her love songs so much - because they are the closest any artist has ever come to expressing the truth about love's many sides - the happiness of it and the frustration of it. Because of that dark element in her songs, I would not suggest using any of Joni's own material for a wedding. There is always that element of "is this real?" in her songs, or some hint of analysis, that just doesn't seem appropriate for a day that is meant to celebrate undying love and complete union. I know that "At Last" is often played at weddings (Etta James) so maybe use Joni's cover as the first dance, if you need to have a Joni element at your wedding. Other than that I'd say "Love" is the most uplifting song about love - not the Travelogue version, though, which is leaden down with too much instrumentation and Joni's dark voice. The original is quite lite and sunny, though. Just some love for thought. - -Andrew __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Actually, there are a few songs she has written about "ideal moments" with another person that don't deal with the complexities of a relationship, per se: Chelsea Morning, The Only Joy In Town, Ray's Dad's Cadillac, In France They Kiss on Main Street, The Crazy Cries of Love, etc. If MG wants Joni she will have Joni - no doubt about it, no doubt that's essential, no doubt that's always been a tricky one for me, so I should just surrender, let Bob and MG shape me, let light hearts remake me, let my worries hush... - -Andrew - --- Murphycopy@aol.com wrote: > Andrew writes: > > << Because of that dark element in her songs, I > would not > suggest using any of Joni's own material for a > wedding. >> > > But this is MG's wedding and she wants Joni!
