Watch out Hell, he's coming your way... so he says.... A thought. I posted at the time of Travelogue release mentioning no 'Hissing' material and stated I beleived it's cos the third part of the 'orchestrated trilogy' would be a re-working of the entire album. Re-watching 'Amercian Masters' video last night (thats to Bob Muller) and wondering again why no mention of 'Hissing'... at all. Any thoughts people? I know she always said the critical response to Hissing was 'the worst' (her own words) but to my mind it has always been the best album by far (sorry Hejira lovers...I love that too but...). As she says in the album notes, it was conceived as a whole and to me that shines out. Is she protecting it? Is she ignoring it? Missing or dissing? What Joni...what ? Tell me woman. I can remember being astonished by the sound of her guitar and voice - definately painting in words and pictures.I love both versions. As for the worst cover of a Joni song. Talkin' 'bout them Joni covers...the best? Well, my personal favorite STILL has to be Bonnie's "That Song About The Midway", her version FAR outshines Joni's own, and that's NOT an easy thing to do. There are about a gazillion that I love, and very few that I dislike. William Shatner has not done a Joni song; however his Vulcan pal Leonard Nimoy has, Both Sides Now of course; it's as bad as you'd think it would be and is included on our Volume 4 (subtitled "The Power of Cheese"). On that same Volume is the classic Nazareth cover of "This Flight Tonight". Now...maybe you don't like it, that's certainly your right...BUT you have to give them credit for making the song their own. Most folks think of TFT as a "Nazareth" song as opposed to a Joni song, as associated with them as Woodstock is with CSNY. Don't believe me? Go to ebay, Amazon, any music website, search on "This Flight Tonight" and see what happens. I rest my case. In much the same way, I always thought "Twisted" was a Joni song, because she made it HER own. The VAST majority of covers of TFT are covers of the Nazareth version, not Joni's version, and she has made a gazooberzillion "royalty pennies" from it. There's even a cover of it on the Nazareth TRIBUTE CD. And this is not documented, but I'll bet a buck that it's also the inspiration for Heart's "Barracuda". Besides the original electric version, Nazareth also does a nice unplugged version of it. My own personal favorite is the speed-death metal version by Zimmer's Hole. Picking the worst cover is easy for most folks, extremely tough for me as I've heard around 1000. There are SO many cheesy dated BSN's, it's hard to single out 1 or even 30. And I think of all these covers as my babies, and it's tough to pick faves or say you don't love them...BUT: "Rainy Night House" by Chad Jasmine is just wretched. Victor can back me up on this. Hasn't been released to the JMDL, but it's coming, so LOCK YOUR DOORS NOW! In my opinion, it's so bad it's great, whereas Jim Nabor's BSN is just plain bad. (And Murphy, this was JIMMY's contribution...). OK, enough about covers. For now. Back to lurking, unless y'all keep 'bout them Joni covers.
