Well no, not quite...not quite YET, anyway. You were correct in that it's her second most covered song - I've identified 89 covers of it so far, the most recent from North Dakota songstress Marsha DesLauriers, who included it as a hidden track on her collection of Christian praise songs...ah, just what the world needs, another Christian trying to make a buck with a CD. Well, Christians are an easy mark...buy a CD, get closer to God...but I digress...I talked to her about her inclusion of it, and she said she wanted to include a secular song amongst her more sacred songs. I responded that BYT can easily be construed as a spiritual song as it deals at least in part with man's stewardship of the earth (and our less than stellar track record thus far). I then challenged her to consider "Love" or "Passion Play" as an addition to her next CD. Besides guaranteeing her at least one sale (besides her Mom, I guess), it would show that she has a unique depth and understanding of the finest composer of her times. She of course said she had never heard of either of these songs in Joni's canon...BOY WAS *I* SURPRISED! Anyway, I told her that "Passion Play" was about the grace of Christ in a cruel & unfair world, and his crucifixion by same, and that "Love" was a rewrite (from a feminine perspective) of the 'Love Chapter' from II Corinthians. She seemed impressed...if either of those covers ever appear, I'll beam with pride at my power to influence the world around me. Bingo. http://search.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 May 2003 18:45:38 -0700 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: The Dawntreader, then and now All the recent talk about peridots and peridoes and little lamzeedivey finally jump started my rapidly aging brain into writing something I'd been intending to put out there for a while now. First of all I love 'The Dawntreader' in both its incarnations. It is a personal favorite. It soothes me when I'm feeling beat up and calms me when I'm wound up. For me it is a warm, sunny day on a deserted ocean beach when the surf is calm and the waves are gently washing at the shore. There are rocks here and there with tide pools containing starfish and anemones. The mind's eye pictures ocean filtered sunlight glinting off of gilded galleons spilled across the ocean floor. Someone sleeps in the sun nearby, someone whose very being seems to be the answer to some yearning in your soul. It is time to sit on a rock, watch the waves, smell the spray, feel the sun on your face and hands and let your mind wander into the deepest parts of the sea where your dreams live.... Currently I am quite taken with the Travelogue rendition of this song and one of the things I like about it is the few, subtle changes in language that Joni has made to the lyrics. They seem to suggest that she is less concerned with being grammatically or metrically correct and is aiming at a more natural and more mature expression of her feelings. Peridots with the 't' pronounced is a more careful and precise way of saying the word to my ears. Each consonant and vowel is sounded out as if all are somehow important and need to be heard correctly and precisely. Singing the word without the 't' sound might be considered lazy but to some ears it may just sound more natural and relaxed. Less self-conscious and therefore more intimate. Later in the song she changes 'city satins left at home, I will not need them', which may be the correct number of syllables for the melody but sounds a bit on the formal side, to 'city satins left at home, I won't need them' which is how most people would say it in everyday conversation. Maybe less poetic but also less affected. Then in the next line it's 'I believe him when he says he loves me' instead of 'I believe him when he tells of loving me'. The new version makes this whole verse so much more intimate for me. And then the clincher comes when 'Leave behind your streets he says and come to me' becomes 'Leave behind your streets he says and come *here* to me'. The way she sings that line in the new version is soooo suggestive and adding the word 'here' sounds so much more intimate and sensual. I think when she wrote 'The Dawntreader' she was much more concerned that her lines have the correct number of beats and she was much more inclined to use poetic license to preserve that poetic form. In the new version she has shed what may have seemed somewhat artificial to her ear in favor of more intimate, less formal and more natural sounding language. It brings a new warmth and sexuality to her vocal interpretation which I love. Musically the new 'Dawntreader' is maybe the best piece on 'Travelogue'. To me it is even more evocative than the original. The guitar on the original is magical at conjuring all of the images that the words suggest but in the 'Travelogue' version, the colors are more vibrant and I can see the light glinting off of those gilded galleons or the scales of a passing school of fish (or maybe a mermaid's tail?) with much more depth and dimension. At the same time it manages to be delicate and beautiful like the original and maybe that is the main reason why it works since most of it comes from Joni's guitar work on the STAS version. And then you can turn this around and marvel at the first version! Joni created all those lovely sounds with a guitar and nothing else when she first recorded this song. That version is more like something etched on colored glass or the ink & marker drawings on the cover of STAS. The Travelogue 'Dawntreader' is an oil painting with maybe a slightly broader scope. The two versions really enhance each other, imo, and once again show what a genius the woman is. Travis has been diagnosed with colitis and after a few weeks of unsuccessful treatment, he was admitted to the hospital today to see if some iv drug therapy will help. This particular hospital was the setting for my worst nightmares a little over 10 years ago so I was not particularly thrilled about having to go there again. When I was driving home from work to pick Travis up, I put 'Song To a Seagull' into the car's cd player and it worked its magic the way it always does. It soothed and calmed me. I kept it in rotation on the way home to this house that I will sleep alone in tonight for the first time in a very long time. But I know I will be fine and that this situation is different from the previous one. Sometimes our brains like to play re-runs, though, regardless (regardless? irregardless? which re-run is that? DED is lousy? that perm really sucked? where did I read that before?) of whether we want to see them or not.
